A long weekend in Fredericksburg can include tours of Victorian mansions, a hike in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, or even a brewery tour. But, no matter what you do, it’s hard to ignore Fredericksburg’s abundance of wineries. Taking advantage of a terroir that resembles that of Florence and France’s Rhone Valley, Fredericksburg wine country produces unique blanc du bois whites, refreshing roses, and rich tempranillos.
Take the Wine Road 290 and see where the path takes you. With over nine million acres of official Texas Hill Country Viticultural Area, America’s second biggest, you’ll want to make multiple trips to Fredericksburg.
To help you narrow down your search, here are five of the best wineries in Fredericksburg, TX.
Torre di Pietra
Warm and rustic, Torre di Pietra is an inviting winery offering tastings of their popular blends and tempranillo. While they host classic tastings for those who drop by, owner Ken walks you through wine and food pairings for an experience you’ll take back to your Fredericksburg vacation home for dinner. There may even be a cat or two to meet on the vineyard grounds!
A serene and picturesque estate, Hilmy Cellars uses friendly animals to help control pests, weeds, and deer that may disrupt the grapes’ growth in lieu of chemicals. As you stroll the grounds, you’ll see guinea fowl, goats, cats, and dogs. Meanwhile, their sangiovese and viognier will keep you coming back.
One of the oldest wineries in the Texas Hill Country is Becker Vineyards. Taste their award-winning cabernet or dry rose before a crackling fire in the stone farmhouse or under the sun on the patio. Before you leave, treat yourself to their homemade lavender goods—soaps, candles, and herbs – and be sure to explore the lavender fields on site.
Chisholm Trail Winery
Exuding the Texas culture completely is Chisholm Trail Winery. Find a fun and lively atmosphere over wines with names like Bad Ass Blush and High Noon Muscato. Stay a while for a brick oven pizza with a Ghost Rider sweet red wine. At Chisholm, it’s all about a good time.
Grape Creek Vineyards
With multiple locations throughout Fredericksburg, Grape Creek Vineyards is a sophisticated label with award-winning an cuvee blanc and petite syrah. In addition to a tasting room is its restaurant, Stout’s at Grape Creek Trattoria, for a Texas-Italian feast.
If you’re visiting SXSW in Austin or the Alamo in San Antonio and have a day to get away, or you’re making a whole weekend out of it, you have to make a trip to the Wine Road 290. From an urban Austin visit to a bucolic Hill Country cottage, an afternoon spent wine tasting in Fredericksburg is a welcome retreat.
