Technology has always been a major part of what sets Vacasa apart from other vacation rental management companies. We’re the only company in the industry that effectively provides the insights and convenience of a local team with the experience and resources of a global technology company.
And we’re constantly striving to improve our technology. Earlier this quarter, we released the industry’s only machine learning driven dynamic pricing system, Yield Management 2.0. (code name Alan). Now, we’re thrilled to announce Tim Goodwin as our new chief technology officer.
Tim will oversee Vacasa’s 50-person technology department — which includes product development, product management and IT — to drive effective processes and innovation.
With more than a decade of technology experience, Tim will focus on strategically streamlining Vacasa’s technology processes to prepare the company for continued growth and innovation.
“We are excited to welcome Tim to the Vacasa team,” says Vacasa Founder and CEO Eric Breon. “He has a proven track record of running product development teams in an environment of growth. He is extremely capable, highly respected, and an excellent leader.”
We chatted with Tim about his vision for Vacasa through the rest of 2017 and beyond. Here’s what we learned.
What are your primary goals for your team this year?
Our goals for the engineering team line up with Vacasa’s overall business objectives. There is so much we want to do as a company, and growing our technology stack and engineering capability is key to helping various Vacasa departments (operations, yield management, and marketing) achieve their goals to better serve our owners and guests.
Ensuring Vacasa.com has stability and has zero downtime is fundamental, and we’ve seen a huge improvement since last year. Our uptime has gone from 99.9% (three 9s) to 99.99% (four 9s!).
Another key initiative for this year is to support our international team and ensure our systems can support multiple languages and currencies.
What are you most excited about for your team or the company as a whole?
I’m excited about the role technology can play in helping our homeowners and guests have a better experience, and how we can build on Vacasa’s value proposition and leadership position in the vacation rental industry.
The Yield Management 2.0 product launch is a good example of that, but it’s just the first of a number of initiatives that we have underway.
What do you think Vacasa’s biggest obstacles are?
Growing quickly is always a challenge. But it’s also why I joined the company. I enjoy this phase of an organization’s lifecycle; it’s where my experience lies and where I feel I can contribute most. We’re constantly innovating and doing new things so we need to prioritize and be discerning about what will deliver the most value for our homeowners and our guests.
What else do you have in mind for Vacasa’s future?
While growth is a key theme, my first priority is to ensure our team is doing awesome things and building great products. Vacasa’s unique culture is a big part of why we all love what we do. We’re listening to the voice of the customer and making sure we’re solving problems and delivering on expectations.
