The place is beautiful and spacious but needs a deep clean. We found dog hair all over the dining table and floor and pieces of glass in the corner of the living room. We ended up vacuuming and cleaning on arrival. There were also a few other issues like the fridge not functioning properly and deck broken in places but hopefully the property managers will address them.
Thank you for your review, Lili. We apologize for the setbacks you experienced during your stay. Our maintenance tech has checked the boards on the deck to ensure all are securely in place, and we do have plans to replace the deck in the future. We have verified the fridge is working correctly and have followed-up with housekeeping regarding our high standards. We hope to see you again!

I would have given this place 5 stars, but two folks from our group contracted hot tub folliculitis after staying here. If you're considering this place, make sure the hot tub has been cleaned and serviced before booking.
Hi Mike, thank you very much for bringing this issue to our attention. We sincerely apologize for the issue with the hot tub. Our property manager has had the hot tub drained, scrubbed, sanitized, and re-filled. We will also be servicing it regularly and keeping a much closer eye on its cleanliness going forward. We hope to have another chance to impress you.

The location was amazing! Views hottub s'mores! Kids loved it! The wife and I loved!
The cliff was very dangerous! But it was far from the house! The town of Elk is so cute and very old-school Mendo!
We loved it! It could use a king size bed!!

Beautiful view with beautiful common spaces. Great kitchen and eating area for groups. Some quirks in house (second staircase into bedroom, 2/3 bathrooms en-suite and 3 other bedrooms share 3rd, 5th bedroom is really a common space) but I would rent again in a heartbeat

Spectacular view of the ocean. The house is very spacious with lots of amenities. We really enjoyed our time.

We had a group of 7 adults and 4 children (ages 10 to 4) at the house for a week. We had a great time and the house was a perfect size. There was plenty of play space, a big kitchen and dining area, and room for adults to spread out. We made good use of the hot tub and patio area as well. The cooks in the family loved the big stove and oven available and the hikers and sightseers loved the immediate access to Highway 1 and the local beach down the road. The town of Elk is sleepy during the winter but the general store was open and had the essentials we needed. I would recommend this house for anyone looking for a quiet coastal getaway with a large group.

Great house for a group

Home had lots of space. Nice to have three large rooms. Kitchen was great. Outside deck is so rotten it's actually a safety hazard. For a large house think you need a good size barbeque. The one here is the smallest I've ever seen. Need locks for all the bathroom doors for privacy. Local manager said they would send out someone to bury a dead deer. Guy came and threw the carcass over the cliff. When you go over to the cliffs to view the ocean and rocks you get a nice "dead smell". On the upside got a nice showing of turkey vultures from the hot tub. Speaking of hot tub, it need a new cover. It so rotten the material is falling in the hot tub. All seven of us had a good time. Enjoyed the home.
We are sorry to see this guest had some disappointments with their stay. The home is not advertised as having a BBQ due to the numerous issues we have encountered with providing one. We are glad to see these guests still made use of the small one on the property. Most of the doors to this home are original, so we will not be adding any locks as we do not want to deter from the historic nature currently present. We apologize if this guest was dissatisfied with the outcome of the deer. We cannot bury it due to well water contamination concerns, and the body was too far decomposed to completely remove from the property. Throwing the carcass over the cliff was the best option especially since we advise guests to not go too near the unstable cliff sides. The hot tub cover is older, but it is still in good condition. We will keep an eye on it for signs of decay. Thank you!

Bring a lighter as we could not find one for the stove, minor detail but important for successful cooking! Also make sure to wear sandals or shoes out to the cliffs as there is a lot of broken glass in the lawn. Other than that AMAZING property, this place is truly a gem. The Elk store is only open until 6pm so make sure you get supplies before they close, or drive to Mendocino as there is a grocery store there too. Hot tub is clean and very enjoyable and the shower upstairs overlooks the ocean as you clean the sand off your body. This was a memory never to forget. !!

Excellent spot - make sure to budget some time to just hang in the backyard, as the view there is one of the most stunning in the area. Wonderful house as well! Lots more room that the pictures make it seem like even.

I would stay again because there are not many options and it is a beautiful place and view. The event we went to was fantastic.
Blanche V.May 2017
It was in a central location for friends and family to stop by as they went up and down highway 1 to various events and activities.

We loved this house and the view so much, even before we left, we were trying to plan our next trip. The house has so much character and charm.... especially the kitchen. We cooked most of our meals there. We visited Point Arena lighthouse, and Mendocino several times. One of the best vacations we've ever taken

The home was lovely with great views through huge windows and plenty of living space. Lots of winding roads to get there, but it was totally worth the drive through forests. We also loved the how the landscaping encouraged plenty of birds (hawks, Anna's hummingbirds, quail, etc.). Nice to have decent internet bandwidth to upload my pictures. An overall excellent place for a family to stay.

We had a nice weekend, property is in a beautiful location. Property needs some attention to repairs. The Deck definitely needs replaced.
The Property Manager is actively working on repairing the deck. Thank you!

Had a great retreat with great friends. Lots of room to spread out and plenty of furniture to be together in one room. Love the history of the house, It was previously owned by the Cooney family, a relative of the Donahue family who ran the mill.
Jonathan L.Aug 2016
Good location, beach is close by. Great view, house is in slightly older shape, contrary to the photos.
Ingrid B.Aug 2016
Wonderful getaway with a big group of friends. Nice older house and beautiful property.

Lovely home with an amazing view.

It would have been better if you had more than one key or a keypad.
We just left the key in the lock box for people to get in & out. If you had a keypad, maybe that would have been easier, but we made it work.
Missed the hot tub the last day & not sure why. Would not power on.
Loved all the room & the great views.
We will inspect the hot tub and make sure it is functioning properly.

Fantastic location with gorgeous view. Perfect for a large group (we had 10 people).

This is a terrific house, perfect for a large group. Great kitchen, fabulous stove. View is unparalleled and the town of Elk is charming. However, be forewarned. Getting information about the house other than what is printed, or if you need something, is a bit like getting blood out of a turnip!

Celebrated a milestone birthday with girlfriends in this huge house on the cliffs. Amazing view, adorable town, great hiking access. A very spacious home!

This was the first time we rented a house for our family vacation. Beautiful property and the grandkids thoroughly enjoyed the dorm room and amenities. They did not want to leave. The adults enjoyed the spacious kitchen and large dining table. Thank you to the owners for sharing their house.

Awesome yard! Unique proposition because of its close proximity to restaurants, pub, market, etc...
Dana P.Feb 2015
Lovely home, beautiful views, pleasant staff. Will definitely stay here again in spite of issues with deck. Hope it gets replaced soon.
Maria K.Jan 2015
This home was perfect for our extended family - the 5 kids loved their large room (with a pool table!), and the 6 adults spread out around the 3 sitting areas and large kitchen. But the view - stunning!!, and the location - wow! Elk is a cute little town, pub next door was handy, easy walk to the beach + the elk grocery was very well stocked with local items. The views from the lawn cannot be oversold

In a remote location near a nice beach.
However I could not recommend it until it has been properly cared for and can be offered in a safe and functioning condition.
We are sorry to read you felt the home was uncared for. We will do an inspection to make sure everything is ready for our guests. Thanks!
Jessica H.Aug 2014
This is a beautiful property and location. Home is perfect for multi-family vacation and we will definitely be returning!
Marcia F.Aug 2014
Very comfortable home for a large group - kids room holds 8 and is a perfect hang out spot ( our girls loved it)
Tin N.Jun 2014
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Best part of house: private view of the ocean from the backyard. The photos don't do it justice, but a short walk in the backyard, leads to your own private bluff with views of the ocean. There is a bench at the edge of the bluff where we would sit at for hours and even had wine and cheese there one night. We would do yoga on the lawn overlooking to ocean. Dinners were had on the backyard deck with the ocean views. And of course, the hot tub is outside in the backyard with the breathtaking view.
The second best part of the house is the well stocked kitchen and range. We cooked all of our meals in.
The bedrooms were cozy, plentiful. Bonus features include the klipsch stero in the living, the pool table up stairs. Also other things like video games, sat tv.
The wifi was weak and there was no cell service (tmobile)- but that was ok for us as we really wanted to disconnect from the world.
We would recommend rental to all just for the view. But the house itself is fantastic (well furnished, cleaned, maintened) It is a big house and would suit a family well or a 3-4 couples. It was just me and my friend, we liked have all the space to spread out.
