Things to Do in Portland, OR

Portland is known for its thriving art, theater, and music scene, but you'll find a little bit of everything in this vibrant city! Start your morning with a delicious treat at VooDoo Doughnut, a Portland classic. Spend your afternoon exploring the museums or just walking around Downtown Portland. End your day with an enjoyable (and educational) Shakespeare in the Park production, a free live theater event that performs at various outdoor settings throughout the city.

Despite its size, getting around is easy! The public transit system makes it possible for visitors to explore the entire city without a car. Of course, if you want to really want to experience Portland like a local, rent a bicycle and explore some of the city's charming neighborhoods full of coffee houses, boutiques, bookstores, and parks.

Portland's Outdoor Attractions

For lovers of nature and the great outdoors, Portland is a veritable paradise! Forest Park sits just west of downtown, accessible by bus, light rail, or a long walk. With over 5,000 acres full of hiking and biking trails, it is the largest natural forested area within city limits in the country. Adjacent to Forest Park is the more developed Washington Park, with the famous International Rose Test Garden, the Oregon Zoo, the Japanese Garden, and the Children's Museum.

When you want to get out of the city for a day trip, the options are endless! The scenic Columbia River Gorge begins approximately 20 miles away from your Portland vacation rental, with miles of scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, windsurfing meccas, and mountain biking trails. If you head 90 miles to the east, you'll find yourself on the snow-capped peak of Mt. Hood or, if you go approximately 90 miles to the west, you can dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean and admire the rugged cliffs of the Oregon Coast.

Wining and Dining in Portland

After all that hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, and windsurfing, you'll certainly have worked up an appetite! Luckily, Portland is home to an ever-increasing food scene with excellent restaurants, brewpubs, food carts, wine bars, and markets offering locally grown (and brewed) fare.

From March to December, the Portland Farmers Market is a must-taste experience every Saturday. As you explore Portland, you'll find that you can barely walk two blocks without tripping over a new food cart that provides unique meals and carves out its own delicious niche in the Portland food scene (think specialty grilled cheese sandwiches, gourmet pot pies, and the now-ubiquitous Korean tacos).

In Portland's locavore-focused restaurants, you're more likely to see exposed brick walls and reclaimed driftwood barstools than white tablecloths, although you certainly won't have any trouble finding a five-star meal for that special night out! Imbibers should make a point to check out the Central Eastside Industrial District, located just across the Willamette River from downtown proper, where some of the city's best breweries, distilleries, and wine bars all sit within walking distance of one another.

Willamette Valley Wineries

Portland offers an eclectic assortment of local breweries, but wine lovers will want to take a trip to explore the area's world-famous wineries! Head south to explore the majestic Willamette Valley, where gorgeous vineyards bump up against humble hazelnut farms in this exceptionally idyllic slice of Oregon. The area is particularly well-known for its pinot noir, but with over 200 wineries to choose from, you'll be sure to find a wine that suits your tastes!

Whether you're planning an exciting escape to a new city or hoping to immerse yourself in the breathing natural beauty that Oregon has to offer, you'll find that Portland gives you whatever you're looking for - and more! Life is good when you're staying in one of our Portland vacation homes. Invite your friends and family, pack your bags, and book today!
