We just had a pleasant stay at Hale Balleja in Pahoa. You need a car, because it's about 9miles from pahoa town, but therefore this place is so quite and perfect for relaxing. The terrasses are huge and the best thing was the outdoor shower after our running sessions. The beds are very comfortable and the whole apartment is bright and easy to ventilate from all sides. There is no air conditioning, but the fans works quite well, because the temperature isn´t that high during night time. We would love to come again!

Loved this property, and the awesome daily rate was super great for the size and the location that I was looking for. Having traveled to Big Island on the regular, I always stay on the quiet/off-the-grid Pahoa side - it’s always nice to find a little gem to stay at, and this is being added to the spots to check for future trips. The house is modernist in style, has great amenities, is BIG, accessible and right across the street from Kehena Beach on the ‘Red Road’. Having a washer and dryer in the house was great, and the kitchen was fabulous.
In response to the majority of other reviews:
- Yes, there is no TV. Embrace it, and the beautiful area you are in. Bring a laptop or tablet to watch some stuff on, as the internet is nice and fast on the property.
- Yes, the layout is a little wonky, but nowhere close to being annoying or a dealbreaker. You do have to walk through the shower to get to the bedroom, but the trade off is that the shower is HUGE (like could fit six people easily). You can also walk out the lanai bedroom door right into the kitchen/living room door (about 15ft). You’ll have the doors open all day and night anyways, so it’s not a big deal at all.
- Yes, there is no AC... but, welcome to hawai’i, it is quite rare to find somewhere with AC. Use the fans, enjoy the breeze and relax.
- Yes, the screens on the windows do need a decent amount of repair. That’s really the only thing I would suggest to the homeowner since the house does catch a decent amount of sun, and constant airflow is crucial. (A tip for anywhere you stay on the islands, use as few indoor lights at night as possible - since the big island is generally pretty remote, your housing will be a beacon for bugs if you have a lot of light on at night.
Keep in mind that this area is remote, so you will obviously need a rental car (get an SUV or something with 4wheel drive, you can experience some pretty awesome spots only with these types of vehicles!). Get groceries when you land! Hilo is a great stopover if you’re flying into that side of the island, tons of groceries stores, KTA is hands down the best! At the Kehena end of the ‘Red Road’ where it dead-ends is Uncles - if you are there on a Wednesday, go there for the night market - it’s insanely fun and what all the locals do every week. Go to every single farmers market you can find!
All in all, this house was perfect for me - and I’ll be back for sure. Mahalo, Hale Balleja - until we meet again.

I’d highly recommend it for couple days of unplugging. If you are looking to stay in this area, you know that this is a remote part of the island. (Closest restaurant and grocery store is 20 minutes away with a car, everything else is farther) As you can see from the virtual tour, circulation between bedroom and living room is through the shower & toilet area, if you prefer walls:) (Wet floor alert in the toilet) However using the lanai, outdoor shower and sliding doors is always an option. The wood decking on lanai is amazing. Everything was very clean, in similar homes it is not unusual to have a sticky layer of ocean spray, not in this house. It has all the basics including few beach items and a lot of interesting architectural details for you to discover. I highly recommend turning off the lights and looking out for the milky way or hanging out in the lanai during a thunderstorm. One final note: although there are interesting local artifacts in the house, I wish the indoor seating and patio furniture matched the design of the house:)

My husband and I had a great stay in this beautiful home. We were close to lava flows and black sand beach, and had some good dining options close by. We would recommend this home!

Unbelievable stay on the Big Island. With in walking distance to a unforgettable black sand beach. Ohana is beautiful and a piece of art. Perfect space for two guests. Enjoyed the deck and outdoor shower. A bit secluded from town, but perfect for a romantic get away. Kitchen is well equipped. Thank yyuou for a very memorable stay!

We had a wonderful time staying at Hale Balleja. The house is elegant and filled with light, the garden lush and colorful, and the proximity to Kehena Beach is a real plus as well. It was also nice just to stroll through the neighborhood, which is peaceful and well maintained. We enjoyed the many intriguing sights nearby, and for a bit of town life, Pahoa and Hilo are not far away. A great stay. Many thanks to our hosts!

What a lovely house. Great setting was a bit further from Volcano than we had intended but great location for sea lava tours. House was very well equipped and clean. Love the kitchen counter top! Only downside was that you have to walk through the wet room/shower room to get to the bedroom. But not really a big issue as you could also walk out across the deck. Love the outdoor shower.Lovely place to stay with lots to do nearby.ThanksGreg & Lucy

My wife and I spent three days at Hale Belleja recently; our first trip to the Big Island. The home and grounds were breathtaking. So remote so peaceful. The highlight came on the last day when we walked across the street and down a path to the most beautiful point I have ever witnessed. It was just a short walk to the beautiful black sand beach and short ride to volcano-heated lagoon. Very laid back side of the island inhabited by locals. Visit Uncle Roberts on Wednesday evenings for cool bohemian farmer's market with cool crafts and ono grinds (killer food). The house was well appointed. NOTE: there is a pull out sofa in the living room where there are great breezes. The house, like most on the island, has no A/C which is probably not normally an issue, but it was HOT and HUMID on our visit. The bedroom has a very hip ceiling fan, but it's not very effective. My only suggestion would be to replace that fan and the one in the living room with a nice Casablanca, but who am I? The house is amazing! Would go back in a heartbeat. I was bumbed when I had to get and stay at the Hilton in Kona. So homogenized compared to this great little retreat. Thank you for sharing your home.

Fantastic house within walking distance to Kehena Beach (black sand beach) and feels very private. It sits on a large plot of land with beautiful landscaping. You will need a rental car as you are far from town. Stock up on supplies so you aren't making extra trips. If you can do a lava flow tour (Mother Nature permitting) I highly recommend it. Did it the last time we were staying in this area. House has no tv (I didn't miss it) but there is wifi. Cell phone reception is spotty at best (didn't miss that either) but there is a landline at the house. The bathroom/shower set up is a bit unconventional but it works. There is also a washer & dryer which comes in handy. There is an assortment of beach items (snorkels, towels, mats, etc) which may come in handy too. Even though the area is very tropical and you hear lots of critters at night, minus one gecko visitor the house wasn't buggy at all. Would definitely stay there again!
