Loved the private beach and the proximity to the beach. We had two small grandchildren with us so the ability to go in and out of the cottage with no walk at all to get there was HUGE. We will be back. The place was roomy & allowed everyone some privacy too which was a plus! Thankful we got to come together as a family for the first time in 4 years. This was the perfect place.

Vacasa has other properties we LOVE, but this is not our favorite. You might love the Crab Shack, but we didn't and here is why. I have always been warned against Dauphin Island. I was told it's more like a bay than the ocean and there are no waves and the water is ugly brown However, we stayed at License to Chill (also with Vacasa) in March and it was beautiful. It was no different in our opinion to Orange Beach. Plenty of salt water, sand and waves. Dolphins every morning. We fell in love with Dauphin Island's cute little town and beautiful beach. We couldn't wait to go back and we booked the Crab Shack for the first week of May. I didn't do my research before booking the Crab Shack and it's definitely not the same. It's on a part of Dauphin Island with brown (mostly fresh) water and no waves. It was more like a bay or river house (in our opinion) than a beach. There were people staying in the area who love the calm waters and prefer them over crashing waves because they can swim more easily. If that's what you are looking for this would be perfect. There is sand, there are palm trees, there are seagulls. There are also a lot of people fishing in the area. I'm not sure if that's what causes the dead fish(and even dead stingrays) up and down the beaches in that area but there are definitely dead creatures scattered about. It's a beach, it just wasn't what we prefer in a beach. It's a very private quiet location. If you want to be secluded this is the place for you. There are things to love about it. There is a deck upstairs that is covered on one side and open on one side. There is a covered deck below that allows for you to sit and watch the kids play in the sand without having to get in the sun and sand yourself if you prefer that. Things to know, the yard (and even places on the sand trail to the beach) have stickers so beware. We bought our own blender and can opener. If you are used to houses that provide everything from beach towels to blenders, you will be a little disappointed. Most of the kitchen items we needed were there, but there wasn't a pizza pan or cookie sheet. There was plenty of blankets, bedding and pillows. Plenty of bowls, cups and silverware. Also- you might want to talk to them on the front end about trash to make sure you're not stuck with it. We were there for seven nights and not once (yes we put it out in the proper container) did anyone pick up trash. If the can had been empty when we got there this might not have been an issue, but we ran out of places to put our trash. This house is a little more dated than other properties in Dauphin Island that we have stayed at, but there are good things to say about it as well. There are four tiny rooms up stairs that my nephew named as Hobbit rooms. Each of the upstairs bedrooms lacks a closet, but they each have two rooms attached to them that remind me of those tiny rooms that are hidden under stairs in some homes. If you're over five feet tall you have to crawl in, but could be a hit with children. Only one of the upstairs bedrooms has a television. This wasn't an issue for us, but could be for others. The bathroom door down stairs does not lock and will some times open on it's own if the balcony doors are open. Same with one of the bedrooms upstairs. When planning sleeping arrangements I think it's important to note where the beds are. There is a day bed in the master suite that has a trundle bed underneath it. There is a queen bed in the other downstairs bedroom. Upstairs, there is a bedroom with a full size bed and a twin(and a bonus toddler bed in the half sized room attached. The second upstairs bedroom has a queen size bed and a twin bed and a small half bathroom inside of it. This is the room with the television. The loft has a futon, but anyone over five feet tall would likely be too large to sleep on it. I write long reviews because I love to know exactly what I am getting so I can have a stress free vacation. Hopefully my review will help you as well.
Manager response:
Hi Val, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback with us. We are sorry to hear that the secluded location of the home and its proximity to the local nature preserves such as the Audubon Sanctuary was not the best fit for your stay. We are delighted that you found the home well stocked and the deck provided an excellent opportunity to soak up the sun while keeping an eye on the kids! The kitchen supplies do vary between homes and we welcome guests to bring any items from home that they may need during their stay. Our guest services team is available by phone call, SMS text, and or email 24/7 if you ever have any questions about what kitchen tools are available in a home. We apologize for any frustration caused by the garbage schedule at this home. We strongly encourage our guests to reach out to our 24/7 guest services line if any issues, such as trash overflow, arise during your stay so that we can remedy these concerns right away. Please know, that we do post updated photos and offer a virtual tour feature in order to allow our guests to view a home’s layout and interior design so that all guests have the opportunity to make informed rental decisions.
