Escape to the scenic Oregon Coast in this lovely home, complete with Danish Modern furnishings, impressive artwork, and an extensive library. This vacation rental in Charleston has sweeping ocean views, comfortable furnishings, and even a separate guest house. With a maximum occupancy of 10 guests, this home is perfect for an oceanfront family reunion or couples' getaway on the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast.
Located just past Charleston, among an eclectic mix of modest oceanfront homes, this home is very close to Yoakam Point and Sunset Bay State Parks, with several other state parks very nearby. When you want to explore the beach, access is nearby, though please note there is no direct beach access from the home. It's about a 15-minute walk along the highway to family-friendly Bastendorff County Beach, a five-minute walk to Sunset Bay, and a short drive to Shore Acres State Park.
Small trails wind through the lush and impressive grounds with blooming flowers for even more fantastic views of the beach than you’ll get inside the home - which is really saying something!
Step into the living room and encounter gorgeous ocean views and a wall of bookshelves. Pick your favorite tome and sink down into the plush leather sofa for a day of leisurely reading. The 21st century welcomes you into its embrace with a modern flatscreen 50-inch TV, Blu-ray/DVD player, soundbar with sub-woofer, and a movie library so you can enjoy all the group movie nights you want, a bowl of popcorn in hand.
Other technology offerings in this home include free WiFi, cable television, and older pieces like a reproduction vintage record player and vinyl records. When you want to unplug, it’s more than easy to just read a novel or daydream in front of the cozy wood-burning stove while you listen to music.
The galley-style kitchen is fully equipped with all the basic appliances, as well as a dishwasher. While you’re cooking, gaze out the large glass window that overlooks the Cape Arago Lighthouse and the gorgeous coastal rock formations. Serve up a meal on country-style dishes at the large wooden dining table, which has ample room for everyone when it is fully expanded.
Sleeping up to 10 guests in a main house and guest house, this vacation rental is ideal for traveling with multiple couples or families. And, with bedrooms on the main floor, this home is ideal for guests who prefer to avoid stairs.
Behind the stairs on the main floor, the master bedroom comes with a California king-size bed, lovely warm walnut furnishings, and an en suite bathroom with a shower. This room also has private access out to a small, protected deck. Upstairs in the main home, you’ll find a bedroom with a queen-size bed and wonderful lighthouse views. A loft area with a sofabed is perfect for the kids, with a small flatscreen television with a DVD player, kids movies, books, games, and puzzles. You'll also have a reading chair, desk, and even an electric keyboard for training the next Mozart! These two upstairs sleeping spaces share a full bathroom with a shower and bathtub.
Separate from the main home but still attached via a breezeway, the guest cottage has its own private entrance and a small kitchenette for early morning coffee or a midnight snack. This space has a queen-size bed and a twin daybed with a pullout trundle underneath. The cottage has ocean views, a television, a full bathroom, and kitchenette with dishes for four.
To ensure you’re as comfortable as possible, this home has a private washer and dryer. Although parking is available outside, please note that it is shared. For the fishermen, the property has boat/trailer parking, and although tight, this space can accommodate up to 21-foot boats. (Please request boat/trailer parking map and directions.)
Outside, you’ll be treated to a ocean-side wonderful deck with unforgettable views of the ocean and the picturesque lighthouse that sits atop Chiefs Island. Lounge outside on the deck furniture, sipping a glass of Willamette Valley wine and daydreaming, barbecue on the gas grill, use the crab cooker to prepare your catch for dinner, or take the telescope outside on a clear, starry night to spot as many constellations as you can.
Explore South Slough by foot or by kayak - this area has an abundance of forest plants and wildlife. Take the 10-minute interpretive nature trail, or trek a little farther to explore the three-mile loop down the watershed. Or, go all the way to North Creek Trail for a four-and-a-half-mile trail loop. Kayaks and canoes are both popular to launch at the paddle ramp, though please be safe and remember that weather patterns can be unpredictable. For more fun, Shore Acres and Cape Arago are both just to the south. You could take a charter fishing boat or whale-watching trip, or visit the Charleston Marine Life Center.
Though the town of Charleston is small, you’ll find quite a few eateries to suit your taste just two miles away when cooking in your fully equipped kitchen just isn’t doing it for you. Portside Restaurant serves up outstanding seafood, while Crabby Cakes Bakery is a more casual place to get a quick bite and some coffee to fuel you up before heading out on an adventure. Of course, nearby Coos Bay and North Bend offer even more restaurants, plus shops and other activities, so don't be afraid to explore!
Experience this scenic slice of the Southern Oregon Coast on your next trip - book today!
Please note: If you're traveling with children, please be sure to supervise them in the yard - this home is in front of a steep bluff. Also, guests must bring their own firewood and kindling.

We had a nice stay at the Bookhouse. The view was beautiful and the house was spacious. It was a little dated. Some new carpet or wood floors and some new furniture would definitely help the appearance and aroma. Had a great time overall!
Margie S.Jul 2019
The home was as promised. Great view of the ocean, however no beach access from the property.
Laurie M.May 2019
Loved the view, yard, guest house and beach! The house had everything you would need to use during your stay!
Kolette M.Apr 2019
Fantastic ocean views. Room for everyone from 7year old to 79 year old. Enough space to have alone time or get together for family time.
Lindsey M.Mar 2019
Cute little place with the comforts of home. Amazing view! Outdated furniture, appliances and kitchen supplies.
Carolee I.Nov 2018
The house was clean and comfortable. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen stocked well enough for cooking, the living room furniture was comfy. The view was amazing. It would be nice if there were a couple more instructions with the home; like where to put the garbage (there was a big container in the neighbor's yard but didn't know if that was shared) and how to access Netflix; but over all the place was great and I will rent it again.
Heather D.Oct 2018
Great views, good location for Charleston Marina and State Parks. Ocean view but no direct beach access since it's atop a cliff. Three bedrooms, one in separate building (guest suite with Queen & Twin). Plus open loft with double futon. Had Fooz ball, Netflix, wifi, lots of games, and lots of books! Had beach chairs, buckets, Didn't have cleaning supplies or laundry soap and only small shampoo & conditioner- so bring those.
Andrew K.Aug 2018
We stayed with 4 children and 4 adults and we had plenty of space. The house was very charming and well equipped. The guest house was an awesome bonus.
Mary R.Aug 2018
The atmosphere of the house was very warm. We felt immediately at home. A very comfortable place.
Alfred P.Jul 2018
We loved it here! Lots of room and great view. Just wish there was a beach access. We had kids so didn’t wanna walk the Main Street to take them. Overall it’s a great place to stay!
Matthew A.Jul 2018
We absolutely loved our stay. The sunset views are breathtaking and the sound of the ocean is magical to fall asleep too. It’s only a few min drive to some great seafood in Charleston.
Michael D.May 2018
House was great, location was perfect.
Tina C.Apr 2018
The layout of the house is perfect for 3 couples, everyone has their own space & bathroom. Clean, comfortable, and easy to relax in. Every window has a beautiful view. We really enjoyed every minute and look forward to returning.
Michael S.Mar 2018
We were amazed and in love with this location! Comfortably fit 2 families with 5 kids, all under 4 yo. We will definitely return!
Jim W.Feb 2018
Nice home with great views. No direct beach access, but close too several beaches, Shore Acres State Park, and Charleston/North Bend/Coos Bay. Home didn't have wood for the woodstove. Vacasa did call back and said it would be handled, but the wood never came. Vacasa needs to be more responsive if an issue arises.
We apologize for the miscommunication - the owners of this home do not provide firewood. Thank you!
Lorrie V.Jan 2018
The view from the living room/dining is only better from the kitchen towards the lighthouse. Spectacular. This is a very large, comfortable house that would easily accommodate a large family or 3 couples. There are some advantages to a separate bedroom/bathroom for anyone looking for a little more privacy. Our entire family was able to spend New Years there and we all enjoyed it immensely. As long as you are not expecting 'new' and or 'fancy' but want to enjoy comfort around a wood stove and view - you won't be disappointed!
Lisa C.Dec 2017
The Book House provided the perfect amount of privacy and togetherness for our family getaway. The stunning view from the beautiful living room and kitchen was the ultimate backdrop for our family photos. The kitchen was perfectly appointed with everything we needed to make a fabulous meal and the dishes, place settings, drinkware left nothing to be desired. We had it all! After dinner we selected one of the many games provided to play with the kiddos. The beds were comfy and the sound of the surf was wonderful to fall asleep to!
Thank you so much!!!
Therese H.Dec 2017
thank you we had a great stay
Maureen S.Dec 2017
Great view, nice house with lots of room. We were down to see Christmas lights at Shore Acres and it was convenient for a trip to do some sightseeing in Bandon and see the lights.
Glenda W.Dec 2017
Absolutely loved our stay here. We love this area and can't praise it enough for the beauty you find here. Lots of historical places to visit as well. The house has an incredible view, was very clean and stocked with just about everything we needed. What it did not have we were able to obtain without having to go far. Our group ranged in age from 67 to 87 and the arrangement of the house worked out well for all of us. We would highly recommend the Book House.
Jane A.Nov 2017
Nice place with a spectacular view
Michelle M.Oct 2017
We had a great stay in the Book House. Very comfortable. Great views of the light house and ocean. Conveniently located near Charleston Marina.
Steven L.Oct 2017
I've stayed and a number of vacation rentals in the Charleston area. The Bookhouse is hands-down the best property I've stayed at. We will definitely return. Great location. Well appointed. Clean. FANTASTIC views. Very clean and comfortable.
Valerie F.Sep 2017
This house is very well set up for two families. The kitchen has every pot, pan and dish you could ever want. The views are fabulous and the area very peaceful. We will definitely be back!
Boyd S.Sep 2017
Long time annual visitor to the Coos Bay/Charleston area, with family in the area. Had to make arrangements on short notice for a funeral, and booked this house as our usual spot was already booked. What a pleasant surprise! The house was well represented by the online listing, and we felt at home during our stay. Beds were clean and comfy, use of the amenities was lined out very nicely and the kids loved the space both inside and out. The views were second to none! The kitchen window frames the lighthouse in the distance, and meal prep and even clean up were fought over. I tend to stick with what I know, and this type of accommodation was outside of my comfort zone. That being said, I would do this again with no hesitation.
Mary Jane H.Sep 2017
Great house, great view!
Kathy H.Aug 2017
We really enjoyed our stay at the house. I have to say the guest house is a lovely addition. It was comfortable and in a wonderful area. A+
Lawrence G.Aug 2017
We really enjoyed the house and the Charleston/North Bend area. The house was perfect for our 10 people. One family (two adults and two kids) took the connected house and it worked out perfectly for them as they went to be earlier than the rest of us. Two teenage girls took the 2nd floor bedroom so they could have some privacy which they appreciated. The living area was just really comfortable for all. The selection of books in the house was fantastic if you want to read. And, the view of the lighthouse was very nice, although we encountered a fair amount of fog. All really had a fun time at Book House.
Melody W.Jul 2017
What an amazing home. With spectacular view of sunsets and surroundings! It was like a dream being here with my family! Thank you!
Debbie C.Jun 2017
The view is the best part of this house. It is truly breathtaking during sunset, and absolutely gorgeous at any other time of the day.
We spent a week here for our annual trip to the Oregon coast. This is our first time staying at this property and we would definitely stay here again. We had 9 people and the house was perfect. Not too large, but big enough for all of us to be comfortable and not crowded.
View- the view is amazing
Location- close to Charleston, but still relatively private. There are houses on either side. One side is blocked by bushes, but the other house is visible (to preserve the view of the lighthouse).
Charm- high ceilings, beautiful woodwork, fire burning stove
Outdated- the house is a little outdated. The kitchen could use an upgrade (i think the stove was from the 70's, worked fine though).
Closed off- this only applies to the kitchen/living room. There is a MASSIVE bookcase separating these two rooms. The previous owner was a journalist, so it fits, but i think the house would be better without it.
No screen door- it may sound like I'm being picky, but why have a house right on the ocean and not have a screen door? You could leave the door open, but then the bugs could get in, no thank you.
Kitchen utensils- if you don't cook while on vacation, this won't apply to you, but we cook a lot. The kitchen had only one pan and minimal utensils. There were two pots, but that's about it. We had to go buy another pan and a griddle.
You may be thinking, if there are so many cons why would you rate it 4 stars? Because it really is a great house. Every vacation rental has its own quirks, and I like to be informed before I rent, so this is my way of helping out the next person. We will definitely rent this house again.
Will B.Jun 2017
Book House boasts a stunning seaview, perched as it is on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific. Huge windows mean you can take in the view from upstairs or downstairs. Had the weather not been so poor we would have spent time out on the deck or in the garden - this place is all about the views. It's a shame there was no direct beach access from the house.
There is so much space, with all the rooms of a decent size, and the décor is good. A stylish place. Recommended.
Deborah K.Jun 2017
This place is amazing & comfortably accommodated a large group of us with kids & babies! Was great to have the guest house for breaks from activity. Only drawbacks are no beach access & hard to find. But it is quite secluded & private with expansive views, wildlife watching, & loads of fun in town!
Sue G.May 2017
We loved the comfort and homey feeling of the house. The view was also amazing! We had some rainy days for site seeing, so having a cozy place to relax and slow down was very nice. We plan to book this house for our family get together next time we come to the Charleston area.
Robert L.May 2017
Loved this home, use of guest house was nice as well as fantastic views.
Donna E.Apr 2017
Wonderful open floor space, extremely well stocked and clean. There was not a single item that I would change....except next time I will book our stay for more nights.
Judy M.Apr 2017
Michelle W.Apr 2017
The house was fantastic! Highly recommend for a family as there is a main house and a guest house. The books, music, and location with respect to some fantastic beaches were excellent.
Franklin P.Apr 2017
Great place to stay in sunshine, rain, even snow. Views are fantastic. Love that little light house. We enjoyed the books, TV with Netflix, the good key board with lots of music books, even a great jigsaw puzzle. Literature about the area and nature made it fun to plan our trips. The beds were good. The guest house was lovely, and perfect for our daughter. We especially enjoyed Shore Acres, with its beautiful formal gardens, its fascinating little cove beach, and the huge rock formations out into the ocean. We went so often It was worth getting the annual pass. Bastendorf Beach was close and fun. Don't miss the Marine Center in Charleston. And the South Slough was one of the most peaceful places I have ever visited. Definitely want to return.
Michelle S.Mar 2017
The home was very "homey-like". Very open and spacious and lots of natural lighting. We brought the whole family and we really enjoyed the home. I highly recommend the beach home for all types of lifestyles.
Dawn W.Mar 2017
We loved it. The weather wasn't the best but with the ocean right there it was awesome!!
Anne "Elise" C.Jan 2017
Beautiful house with a beautiful view of the lighthouse. Couldn't have asked for a prettier location.
Sarah B.Jan 2017
From start to finish our experience at this home was amazing. Vacasa made planning the trip incredibly easy and were in communication via email every step of the way. The house itself was absolutely beautiful! The high ceilings with ocean views made even rainy days inside seem full of life and beauty. We had a big group of 10 guests and there were plenty of amenities to accommodate our whole party. This is a great space for a big group, plenty of dish ware and beds/bedding. The surrounding area is stunning; there are plenty of great hiking trails near by, or a short drive away.
Leann M.Dec 2016
Great house, great location!!
David M.Nov 2016
My husband booked this house for me as a gift for our 50th wedding anniversary. I have wanted to see the amazing waves at Shore Beach one day and hiking on the trail from Sunset Bay to Shore Acres. All in all, it was an amazing time. We enjoyed the house which was, of course, plenty big for just the two of us! Everything we needed plus an amazing view out the kitchen window and the glassed in porch for viewing the ocean. Thank you. We are planning when we can come again and bring some of our family to share it with us. Have recommended it to lots of people already. Thanks for the scope and the binoculars also.
Rachel C.Nov 2016
this house is perfect for families not fancy relatively clean great location quiet setting
Martin M.Oct 2016
The two maintenance issues were corrected quickly. The house was clean and well appointed. Thank you to all of your staff.
Pepperleigh S.Sep 2016
Comfortable and scenic, a nice home to stay in
Barbara P.Sep 2016
Great place to entertain a family. The view is spectacular and the home has plenty of beds to accommodate at least 8-9 adults. Crabbing this time of year is great - our guys got 12 keepers on Saturday and 17 on Sunday. Can't really vouch for the kitchen and what all is there as we ended up eating out most of the time except for our crab fest on Saturday evening and those were cooked in the crab pot outside! We plan to come back and stay again.
Kathleen R.Sep 2016
Awesome library, nice layout, great for family get away
Barbara .Sep 2016
Seven long time friends (46 years) had a reunion at the Book House. We found the house to be warm and welcoming and very accommodating for a group of 7-9. The location is perfect for the sites and beautiful beaches in and around the Charleston Area. It had all the amenities anyone would need and the cottage was darling and affords privacy from the main house clatter and chatter. We all wished we had more viewing area to see the lovely beach below us, but the distant views were beautiful. Overall a very nice place for big or small groups.
Mary Ann H.Sep 2016
We rented the "Book House" for our family over Labor Day weekend. It is a perfect house with a wonderful layout for a family. It is spacious, well equipped and has the most spectacular view. We watched whales right in front of the house! The guest house was perfect for young grandchildren that need more quiet time. The little town of Charleston does not have a major grocery store, but the General Store has most essential items. The High Tide Cafe has great seafood and during the summer the deck for dining is very pleasant. The Crabby Cakes Bakery has delicious baked goods for breakfast or dessert. The aquarium in Charleston is well done and a good place to visit. Sunset Beach just down the road is so great for kids to play safely along the waters edge, build sand castles, etc. The hike between Sunset Beach and Shoreacres gives you the most spectacular ocean views you could ask for. If you are a golfer, the famous Bandon Dunes is only 25 minutes away. The Book House is a wonderful house to rent and the area has lots to offer for entertainment.
Alice W.Sep 2016
A lovely quiet place with great views.
Karen C.Aug 2016
Property has amazing views of lighthouse and beach from back porch. Kitchen is well stocked, and the guesthouse is great. Gorgeous state parks are a few miles down the road. Property is somewhat far from good grocery store, so be sure to stock up on way in or while in Coos Bay or other town.
KAREN L.Aug 2016
We really enjoyed this property during our stay. It was clean and had everything we needed. The views were gorgeous and Charleston was a quaint town and close enough to other towns to go exploring. The flower gardens close by is a definite must see, they are beautiful, it is right down the road from this house. We would definitely stay here again and hope to again in the near future.
Erich R.Aug 2016
Come for a visit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
The location is nice and the quiet is so relaxing.
Peter T.Jul 2016
I was originally looking for a house right on Bandon Beach, but looking back I'm actually glad they were all booked and that it forced me to look up the road in Charleston. The layout of this house is perfect for it's location - shouldn't every house overlooking the beach have floor to ceiling windows on the ocean side? The pictures of this house are as advertised. You're on a cliff above the beach, but the ocean is right outside your back door. We loved that not only was Bandon only twenty-five minutes down the highway, but we thoroughly enjoyed Charleston and Coos Bay. The proprietors of the local coffee shops and restaurants in Charleston were super friendly - every last one. Also, the house is located so perfectly for visiting Arago State Park, which had great variety of amazing views, beaches and trails. Back in the house, everything was clean and having a washer and dryer was great - especially after a few waves snuck up on us and got our clothes a bit salty. We stayed so busy exploring, we never even took advantage of the DVD collection, but it looked like there were lots of fun titles. Likewise, the wifi worked well and wasn't too slow. My wife and I were the only one's staying here this trip, but judging by all the space in the house and the gorgeous little additional cottage that we never touched, this would be a great rental for a larger family or several couples.
Jeff W.Jul 2016
The location was great and the neighbors were very kind. They offered access to the beach using their stairs to get down to the sand. House was in a good condition and made for a nice stay.
Yi S.Jun 2016
The book house exceeds our expectation. We like a lot the house design and the location. Couldn't have a better experience.
