Updated cottage overlooking Columbia River - close to hiking, fishing & more!
This absolutely charming White Salmon cottage overlooks the Columbia River and has been thoroughly renovated from the ground up to ensure all four family or friends feel right at home.
Set on a side road just off Highway 14 in the Columbia River Gorge, this serene and stylish home is perfect for a quiet family or couples' vacation. Enjoy nature at its finest by hiking at nearby trails, fishing, or even trying out new water sports. Just a half a mile away, you'll find a launch point for windsurfing on the river.
Ample natural light streaming through the windows highlight the wood floors, calming walls, and comfortable furnishings throughout this charming home.
Grab a book and settle onto the sofa or accent chairs in the living room. On cool evenings, light the wood stove for extra warmth and ambiance. The kids will love watching and listening to the train flying by across the street every so often. And before retreating for the night, play board games, sit out on the deck to stargaze, or watch a movie on the flatscreen TV.
The galley kitchen's black cabinets beautifully contrast the light colors in the living room. Stainless steel major appliances and add-ons like a dishwasher, microwave, coffeemaker, coffee grinder, blender, and toaster ensure home-cooked meals are a reality each day of vacation. Eat a quick snack while seated at the counter top bar, or step down into the dining room to sit around the wood table for four.
One delightful bedroom with a queen-size bed is located downstairs and those staying down here can use the full bathroom's tub/shower combo each morning. A second bathroom is upstairs just off the loft sitting area. And behind a half-wall is a second queen-size bed, giving all four guests a place to sleep each night.
More great amenities here include a washer and dryer, WiFi, and cable!
Outdoor enthusiasts will adore White Salmon and its surrounding areas. Find adventure around every corner! Rent or bring your own kayaks and take on the rapids on the White Salmon River. Try out windsurfing and kiteboarding the Columbia River from the launch just five miles away.
Draino Lake is a mere half-mile away and is great for fishing, or head two and a half miles to Dog Mountain Trailhead for a nice workout and incredible views. Spend a day in Hood River, Oregon just across the bridge for craft breweries like pFriem and Double Mountain, galleries, and more. Don't forget some mental stimulation: the history and exhibits of the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Association are incredible!
Don't count this home out during the winter months! Mount Hood Meadows is only a short distance away, and with space in the garage for boats, fishing rods, and skis, there's no end to the adventures that await you. There's also fun to be had in the Mount Hood Railway, which runs enchanting holiday excursions.
Your loved ones will absolutely adore this Washington cottage, so book it now and let the anticipation to relaxation begin!
*Please note that this rental is located near an active train track.
So charming and well done!! Set up and items provided made it feel as if you were a personally invited guest. The trains do come by often, but were never a bother to us. The owner has provided sound machines if the trains do bother you. Beautiful garden flowers, wonderful laundry room. I cannot wait to come again!
The re model on this cottage is amazing, it really provides a warm inviting sun filled place to stay. Loved every minute in this place. The trains are frequent but you get used to them and the place provides things to help with the noise. Would definitely return to this place in the future. Thanks
The house was pretty amazing! Clean, comfortable, spacious and equipped with almost everything. We loved the design of thehouse and the windows with the views.
The only downside is it’s located right by the road and it can be a little noisy outside and no attractions are within a walking distant.
Overall we had a wonderful stay and enjoyed our time there.
A small home with two bedrooms and bathrooms large living room and picture window looking out over the Columbia River to the Oregon misty mountains. We ate in using the fully equipped kitchen. Sure the train wistled bye sometimes hourly but we slepted well. Down the road is the Dog Mountain trail which was magical in the winter drizzle. Great stay.
Very good accommodation for 4. Very well remodel with quality workmanship. As noted in brochure it is near a Railroad crossing.
This lovely cottage has a convenient layout and is immaculate. The trains were not a problem and the hedge provides an appealing privacy screen. We loved it and plan to return next year.
We loved our time at this cottage. The train noise is a lot so bring ear plugs. They go by almost every hour even through the night. Tracks are just across the street from the cottage.
Beautiful views and great amenities.
Beautiful location and amazing home. Every need was met, every detail was covered and the home was so clean and inviting. That view tho! Gorgeous. And we love trains. Enjoyed it very much. Thank you. In our 15-day stay in Portland area this was our favorite spot. And so close to Hood River and viewing the kite boarders etc. Wished we had booked it for longer. Happened to meet the Vacasa housekeeper on our way out. Professional, polite and asked us, ‘how could we have made your stay better?’ Who says that any more?! 😊
This house was beautiful. Very comfortable for 4 adults celebrating our Anniversary! Each couple had the space qnd their own bathroom. Updated bathroom and kitchen. Loved the wood floors! The train really did not bother us at all. The sleep therapy machine drowned out the whistle blowing all night long. The only downside was the hedge was way too high to enjoy the view. We had to sit upstairs to look out and would of preferred to sit outside to enjoy it while drinking our coffee or wine. Also to let others know, there is a $2.00 toll charge to cross the bridge. We paid about $14.00 on bridge fees to go to Oregon. Great bakery in White Salmon and good food in Hood River. So beautiful!
Please note the cottage is located adjacent to high traffic railroad crossing. There are numerous trains that travel through through out the day and night. The train's horn is sounded each time it reaches the crossing. This might affect your nights sleep.
The home was very clean and homey, with recent updates making it very nice. It's not a great location for coming and going, but if you plan on exploring for the day and coming back to relax for the night at the house, it's perfect. The trains woke us all up 2-3 times through the night, but it wasn't a big deal and we all enjoyed watching the trains. The white noise machines help a lot, and bring ear plugs if you are worried. There was only a view of the river on the top floor because the bushes are too tall, hopefully they cut them down because the ground floor is really nice. There is tons of extra space for air mattresses if you have kiddos etc. Beds were not super comfy, and not a lot of extra bedding, so bring your own blankets if you are doing extra beds. Overall, we had a great time.
The house was immaculate with great features. It exceeded my expectations. Views of the Columbia River and mountains. The only negative is that it is across the street from railway crossing. The train comes by 2 or 3 times whistling. Otherwise, I highly recommend. I wish I had stayed longer.
What a well appointed cottage! I can’t think of a thing to improve. Well furnished...well kept...clean and beautifully furnished! All the comforts of home! We did not mind the trains at all! My husband enjoyed counting the cars! Highly recommend! Thanks for everything!
Definitely would stay in this location again. One suggestion - have a couple servings of coffee and tea available. We got in really late and had no time to grocery shop before hand. If this isn't an option, at least there was a cute little coffee shop down the road.
Loved the location and the amenities provided! Cute cottage with everything you need. The train was not bothersome and I felt it was charming :)
Close to Hood River and hiking, I would definitely book this cottage again but for longer!!
The setting was absolutely gorgeous even on cloudy days. There are many excellent recreational opportunities within a very reasonable drive. The home was well appointed and laid out in a manner that was conducive to interaction. The kitchen and grill enabled us to cook delicious, healthy meals compatible with our dietary needs.
While some find the trains to be loud, I found them to be a feature, not a bug. It was quite entertaining watching the engines' lights plunge through the fog at night. I've heard louder train noises when living miles from the tracks.
I've stayed at a few different Vacasa rentals now, and they have all been very good. This house, however, was among the best. Everything in the house was in a perfect state of repair, it was gorgeous. We loved the views, and just getting to put up our feet and relax.
However, there was one tiny issue we had- The nearby train tracks and rail crossing. Two or three times every hour, day and night, trains would pass by. This made sleeping an unexpected challenge. The downstairs bedroom is much quieter, with far better insulation from sounds of passing trains. A "sleep therapy" machine is provided for upstairs sleepers, but playing soothing sounds to compete with the sound of passing trains wasn't really helpful for me.
Still, the rest of the trip was so enjoyable we wouldn't hesitate to go back. In fact, we already made reservations at this exact property again in just a few weeks.
We are always delighted to see repeat guests!
The fact that the home is 100 yards from the railroad tracks AND it’s right by a crossing should be mentioned in the listing. Trains go by the home at a minimum of once every 30 minutes (they pass all night long too). Since there is a crossing right across from the house, the trains blow their horns every time they go by. The trains are ear shattering and we had 2 kids that barely got any sleep because of this.
We would have understood if it was clearly mentioned in the listing but we had no idea what we were in store for. It’s unacceptable to have such an annoyance present and not be alerted of it beforehand. We WOULD NOT recommend this house to anyone. It’s far from relaxing and peaceful when you get wake up calls every 20-30 mins during the night.
Also- there were no blinds or shades of any kind on the downstairs windows. It felt uncomfortable at night with the large amount of windows and no ability to draw the shades.
We call this home Conductor's Cottage because of the proximity to the train tracks. We do mention this in the description of the home, and it is mentioned in several reviews as well. We apologize if this came as a surprise. There are no other homes around the cottage, and there is a hedge in front of the downstairs window to help create privacy as well as blinds in the windows in the downstairs bedroom. Thank you!
We were very appreciative and impressed by the craftsmanship of this home ... inside and out. The layout was perfect for a most relaxing stay.
That said, however, not only is the home beside the railroad tracks, but a railroad crossing as well. Hence, the ear-splitting train whistle immediately in front of the house was pretty annoying, especially in the evening.
I'd stay there again, but my husband would not, because of the train.
Still, it's a great place and has a lovely view of the Gorge.
Great cottage; too bad you had nowhere to walk, the highways did not have walking/bike paths
The A/C could not keep up with the heat (granted, it was very hot), but that was difficult. And it is right on the railroad, so there's a bit of noise. Otherwise, it was very clean, spacious, and a cute cabin.
This beautiful home has been lovingly renovated but the owners. A very comfortable spot. BUT road and train noise are significant. The home is just off a busy state highway and a very active train track is just across the highway. The trains blow their horns day and night.
Place was very good and not hard to find if you know the area!!!! Ask for better and more specific directions from the company.
Really don't have much to add. All reviews sum it up very nicely. We loved location and were able to experience all planned without much drive time. Wonderful! Good thing we hiked a lot because food was super. View lovely and well-what's a little train noise. Thanks. Will come again!
Beautiful clean home near the railroad along the Columbia River. Loved sitting in the upstairs living area drinking coffee in the morning.
This house is much larger than expected and the train noise wasn't as disturbing as others had written about.
Be aware this is near train tracks. If you are a light sleeper, book elsewhere.
Lovely cottage, beautifully crafted and decorated. We felt like our care and comfort were a priority; it was well organized and clean. You have to be OK or even a fan of trains to make the most of this beautiful little spot on the Columbia. We stayed for 5 days and explored the entire region on day trips; this was a great central location to rest and recover each day from our adventures. VACASA support was helpful and responsive.
I could see hownthe train would get tiresome but our kids loved it for the first day, became soothing after a while. Great kid friendly trail heads and pizza in good river. It was a wonderful weekend
This home is absolutely gorgeous. It's spacious, bright, lots of windows to view the beautiful mountains, and lots of cute touches around the home. The carpeting on the staircase was so soft. They left plenty of linens and paper goods. We enjoyed the nearby activities, like Dog Mountain, which is one of our favorite hikes, only a few miles away, Skamania Lodge, which has a great brunch, walks, and a spa, Hood River, with great restaurants, and more! We also cooked in the spacious kitchen and played games. If not for the noise of the trains, we would've given this place 5 stars.
The trains were very loud day and night. We appreciated the sleep machine and ear plugs, but still had trouble sleeping. You can also hear the trucks driving by on Highway 14. We played music in the house during the day to make it more peaceful.
Only improvement they could offer to this house is complimentary coffee. We're used to staying at homes through VRBO, and were surprised not to see any coffee.
Thanks for allowing us to stay at your beautiful cottage. We have a very relaxing time. Very beautiful inside and out along with the great view.
right across the street from trains that go constantly. BEAUTIFUL! and BEAUTIFUL views of Columbia River and quiet area. RIGHT off the main street so not a chance of getting lost!
We loved our February stay in White Salmon! The house was warm and comfy; the view was amazing; everything was clean and cozy! We had a delightful stay and would definitely stay here again!
Overall, Nice updated cottage.
I wouldn't recomend this place for groups with children since the property is not fenced and it's located on a high traffic location.
Great for groups of 4-5 tops... the train is a bit loud when it does pass by, but it's not as bad as some other reviews make it sound. all updated appliances through out the place.
Somethis to keep in mind if booking during the winter time is you will see tons of snow!! So be prepared with some snow tires, a 4x4, chains ... and for an amazing view.
I found this place very confortable and would definitely consider it for future vacations.
When we first arrived none of the heat was working and we could see our breath. We were able to get a fire going in the wood stove, but were never able to get the heat to work. The property manager was great and helped us try to troubleshoot the heaters, and then dropped off four space heaters the next day. None of this was her fault and she was very helpful, but we still were disappointed by this issue. The trains are also very, very loud. It didn't bother us, and I know it says something about this in the description, but know that the train tracks are very close to the home and trains blow horns at all hours of the night. They do provide a white-noise machine and earplugs, which was nice. The home itself is very spacious and well kept up. I would recommend bringing everything you'll need for the kitchen, as it wasn't as fully stocked as I was led to believe. Overall we had a great time during our stay, but there is some room for improvement.
Clean, beautiful, great location.
I had a great stay at the Conductor House. The view of the Columbia was spectacular to experience. The weather was sun, rain, and varying levels of wind, but I stayed nice and snug here. One of the things I appreciate most about the house was that it was impeccably remodeled. I love turn of the century homes, but this one is special in that it's got all an new interior finish. At the same time the house retains it's history with a sliding barn door to access the garage, and wood beams in the ceiling adjacent the kitchen. I visited the house for a weekend of song-writing and the house complimented my stay, and helped keep me productive. I look forward to coming back.
this is a great place, easy to find, and very comfortable
The house is beautiful and the owner put the best of everything in it. The view is spectacular! The only downside is the railroad crossing right across the street. The train runs frequently and the whistle is loud.
We enjoyed your place a great deal! Beautiful house. Only drawback was the train. Location was convenient.
We were looking for a place for two nights that didn't allow pets since my daughter is allergic. The location and is beautiful with a pretty view of the gorge from the large open living space. The house is very well appointed and clean. I am a heavy sleeper and didn't mind the trains going through all night long, but my daughter is not and didn't get any sleep until the trains stopped running in the morning (apparently they were working on the track during the morning hours). Dustin was very responsive to our concerns (we had some problems with the grill and the internet as well) and even went and bought ear plugs. The internet was also a big issue - hopefully Dustin will get that upgraded for future tenants. So mixed review - great place for a heavy sleeper. Bad for light sleepers.
One of the best vrbo houses I have stayed at. only 10 minutes from hood river. The interior is new and high class. You won't find one better.
I wouldn't recommend staying here with another couple. There is no door to upstairs, the main living room has a couch, a chair with ottoman, and an old uncomfortable rocking chair.....not a good area to relax and unwind. The house however is gorgeous. The finishings are beautiful and lots of attention to detail. About 10 minutes to white salmon.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Conductor's Cottage. Its proximity (about a 10 minute drive to White Salmon, and 15 minute drive to Hood River) was just perfect as it was close to everything, but just far enough away to feel like you're truly on vacation. The drive to and from Hood River was beautiful (you go through five tunnels on the scenic drive winding alongside the Columbia river), and there are some great food/drink options on both sides of the river (we especially enjoyed the North Shore Cafe for breakfast/coffee in White Salmon).
Its a great jumping off point for the Hood River/Mt. Hood/Fruit Loop area on the southside of the river, or to the Pinchot National Forrest and Mt. St. Helen's which is a pretty and relatively short drive to the north. The house isn't much more than an hour or so drive east from the Portland airport.
The house itself is along the highway, and as the name implies, the railroad track as well. Make no mistake, the trains are loud and come through pretty regularly day and night, but that doesn't detract from the quality of this home in the least bit. Plenty of room for a family (or 2 couples), and great amenities. The kitchen was immaculate and fully stocked with cooking and dishware, and we even fired up some steaks on the grill outside one night, which was clean and easy to use.
All in all, Vacasa provided a seamless and ultra-convenient travel experience and the owner of this home has done an incredible job remodeling this home with all modern amenities. I'd highly recommend this home, and if you are a light sleeper, bring some earplugs or just enjoy an extra bottle of wine or craft brew before bed that the area is known for!
We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. Everything was in great condition, and a (nice) house definitely beats a hotel stay! The only warning we would provide is about the trains...hence the name "Conductor's Cottage." If you are used to sleeping nears trains and with noise, then this won't be much of an inconvenience to you. Otherwise, it may take a night or two to start sleeping through all the horns! Or just BYO white noise.
Great house, right off the highway so you hear the traffic and trains. But great house. Only a view of the river if you are upstairs.
