The Idyllwild playground near Starwberry Creek was especially loved by our 4 children. We could hike the small trail by the creek behind it too! Our favorite place for treats is the Ice Cream and Jerky Shop. The chocolate dipped cheesecakes are delicious!

The new Idyllwild Brew Pub is great! It was the first time we had been there and enjoyed the wonderful outdoor deck, nice beers, and good food. This house has the most awesome view and frankly, we enjoyed spending time in the main living area, cooking in, enjoying the silence and views from the deck.

The hikes we did were amazing. I don't remember the names though. We had our two pitties with us, they love the outdoors and enjoyed the trip as much as we did.

The older people in town are not too keen on out of towners. Especially the people that work at Fairview Market. We felt like an inconvenience to them and not one person even said hello. The owner Debbie, at Showtime Video, was very helpful and super sweet. They rent DVD players out and have a good selection of movies to rent.

The town center is very close and the larger market is even closer. My recommendation is to order a takeout burger from the Lumbermill and eat it in front of the fire at the cabin. Great food in a beautiful cabin.

The hike to Tahquitz point is awesome and right up the street from the place. We tried making it to PCT although had to turn back short due to ice and hiking with kids. Make sure to get permit in town before heading up to Humber park. Bring clothes for all weather conditions. It was warm out and we never would have expected to see snow/ice on the trail.

Fratello’s Ristorante & Pizzeria: new place, very good pasta and bread, (almost) over the top service.
Red Kettle: always good for breakfast/ burgers.
    Idyllwild Pizza: excellent white pizza.
Mile High Cafe: slow service, very good food.
Cafe Aroma (didn't get there this time): always good, but expensive; make reservations.
Oma's: didn't get there this time either, just went there first time last year, excellent breakfasts.
Overall: appears to be fewer restaurants, shops and galleries in town than ever. Didn't get to hike this time due to kids colds.

Idyllwild is a great little town. It has a remarkable number of places you can eat out even if you have food restrictions. We particularly like Gastronome. The Salmon is could just right every time we go. Plus it has a great atmosphere, has a great view from the deck, and has a feline greeter (named Hemingway). Other yummy and atmospheric restaurants include: the Red Kettle, Idyology, Cafe Aroma, the Idyllwild Pizza Company, and La Casita--just to name a few. Sky Island Organics and the Fairway market have everything need to cook great meals at home. Higher Grounds is an excellent coffee house, and we really enjoyed the small and intimate Caroling event they hosted on Christmas Eve this year. If Seattle coffee is the gold standard, Higher Grounds espresso drinks are only one rung down from that. Quite respectable.

The hiking in Idyllwild is fantastic here. There is something for everyone, from short, easy trails at the nature center to the devil's slide and suicide rock. Or you can even break out your climbing gear and climb Lily Rock. The 6 mile out-and-back Ernie Maxell trail is a favorite. Most people start from the top which is easy to find and has ample parking, but one advantage of starting at the other end is that the first half of your hike will be uphill, rather than the second half.

The town has all sorts of festivals and events, including two film festivals. Some events/customs have particular small-town charm, such as the memorial day garage sales (all over town) and the Halloween "parade" in which half the town marches in costume down N. Circle drive into the center of town while the other half sits in lawn chairs at the side of the road handing out candy. The town is super dog friendly, so there will be quite a few dogs in costume too. (This year we saw a couple dress as spy vs. spy and carrying a wiener dog, dressed as a stick of dynamite. Last year we saw a toddler dressed as a copy leading along his parents, who were dressed as prison inmates.) Major Max, a golden retriever and the officially elected major of Idyllwild, attends all major town events and is available for petting and group photos.

Live music is available regularly at various bars and restaurants. Several stores sell jewelry, pottery, and other art by local artists. My personal favorite is the gallery Artspresso. There is also an excellent small museum gallery on the campus of the arts academy.

A great hands-on artistic pursuit is to make use of the paint-your-own pottery place in center town. There offers a great selection of pottery, helpful staff, and great prices. You can paint anything from dragon sculptures to sake sets.

Since the town runs on tourist dollars, most stores and restaurants will have a very accommodating schedule, including holidays. For example, Gastronome serves Thanksgiving dinner and the Idyllwild Pizza company is packed to the gills on New Year's day. The town accommodates special dietary needs well. (Just to name a come of examples: Meadow Green cafe serves vegan raw wraps and the pizza joint has gluten free crust.)

This property is in walking distance to the center town (about 15 minutes), yet far enough removed that it is woodsy and profoundly restful.
