Mt. Biking at Post Canyon is minutes away. Mt. Hood Meadows is 45 minutes. Maps show you can hike Mitchell point overlook trails from nearby (maybe walk from the house?) - though we didn't do it. Kids loved exploring the woods around the house.

Of course, we loved the Fruit Loop, particularly the organic fruit stands. Pine Street Bakery is great - breakfast and lunch! Also, the Maryhill Museum is worth the drive - we took 214 on the north side of the river and loved the points of interest and beautiful scenery. In the afternoons, we loved going down to the waterfront park and watching the wind and kite surfers - even did some SUP ourselves!

Our group enjoyed venturing out to the "Fruit Loop" for fresh fruit and wine. The hiking around Mt Hood and the Gorge were amazing. But at the end of a day, relaxing on the large deck with the sound of the river below and the stunning view of Mt Adams ahead was the best!
  • Hood River

Take a wind surfing lesson. Half of our group took lessons at "The Hook" area at the waterfront or just go down and watch the kite and wind surfers. A few blocks from the house is a great place for ice cream. Climb the stairs next to the Big Horse Brewing pub maybe 200 steps. Have movie night in the living room in front of the big screen TV. Super comfy living room. Great gas grill for cooking hamburgers or salmon.

Pick your own at Hood River Lavender (beautiful views from their spot), Hood River U Pick Organic (plus fun farm animals to visit with), Apple Valley Country Store (Huckleberry Milkshakes), Solstice Wood Fire Pizza (down at the water near the wind surfers), Camp 1805 (next to Solstice (great drinks) and fun shopping on Oak Street.

The Columbia River Gorge Highway and Multnomah Falls is only about 25 minutes away and very easy to get to from this property. Get to the Falls by 8 am to get your pick of parking and to see the Falls without the large crowds. We got there at 8 am, did the six mile hike around the Falls and when we came back down the crowd was huge. Elowah Falls Trail was also nice. If you go to the Larch Mtn. Lookout, you will see five mtn. peaks from this one spot. It seemed to us that most of the hikes were on the eastern side of the Columbia River Gorge near Hood River.

Boda's Kitchen is a fantastic cafe. Pfriem for fantastic beer and upscale food. Double Mountain is a great family spot and so is Pietro's Pizza. If you want to go the the mountain for snow or hiking, Cooper Spur is one of my favorite places. I took some friends who don't ski but really enjoy playing in the snow. We rented snow shoes and had a blast. Food and service at the Cooper Spur Tavern were exceptional and you can't beat the atmosphere. In the summer you can hike or drive up to Cloud Cap Lodge and Tilly Jane campground and soak up some great history of Mt Hood. Cooper Spur is only an hour from the Maritz on the Columbia. Don't forget the bike trail on the old highway that goes from Hood River to Moshier.

The park near the Columbia is an enjoyable place to watch the sports enthusiasts as they wind surf and "board sail." The WAAAM is an outstanding collection of antiques, airplanes from as early as 1919, vintage cars and other memorabilia. It is well worth the entrance fee. There are lots of really good dining spots - Nora's Table, Bette's, Rivers 3 Café.

Double Mountain Brewery has great thin crust pizza. They were able to accommodate a party of 18 for us, with no complaints.

Also, Big River Saloon was a great bar for later in the evening. They have two pool tables, darts, grab booze selection, and even a small menu of great quality food (homemade ranch and homemade sweet potato fries were delish!).

Keep in mind that this house is out of town about ten minutes. Be CAREFUL drinking and driving. We were warned: "come on vacation, leave on probation". My parents were pulled over between town and this rental one evening (of course they weren't drinking). They later told me that the CHP sits on the the side of the road at night (by the market where you first turn off from HWY 35 toward this house), so just be careful.
