the property has a completely remote feel, but it's not too far away from civilization. There is a lot of outdoor lighting, which makes it more comfortable and relaxing in the evening/night. There are several trails and novelties around the property that make it fun to explore (especially kids). It is a bit 'wild' and rough-cut, and a bit of a hike from the car to the cottage (not a big deal, until you need to haul luggage and coolers to and from). We went in the fall, and it was gorgeous... I can image this place being a bit treacherous in the winter time, though. Still, amazing place... haven't found another like it!

We used the BBQ and enjoyed a glass of wine and absorbed the quiet secluded area.

We went to the Zig Zag Inn for dinner, and we were not real happy with the food, but it looks like there are a lot of other dinner locations to choose from. There were lots of hiking trails really close by. There was a little tavern about a mile from the house. We rode our bikes down there, but the wait staff was terrible: took a long time to get served and even though we ordered a second round, we didn't get the drinks.

The zig zag river was amazing to walk around and fish, very pleased it was only a two minute walk to it! Most important is that our two children had alot to do even if we just hung out at the cabin.. Dad and I could relax by the fire while they played upstairs and in the shop with ping pong and basketball. It was so great to go and just have to bring food. Everything we needed was there, and super clean, and we really appreciated that.

We had an opportunity to do several hikes around the area. However, the best hike was to Hidden Lake. This is our fifth time to Rhododendron but the first time staying at the Stove and Stream. First, we love the little town of Brightwood nearby - they have a general store with very friendly staff (there is also a Thriftway on 26).

Every morning we woke up early and went for a nice jog up and down Barlow Trail road - loved the surroundings with the mountains and rivers nearby. Also, there is a great restaurant on 26 (Skyway) that has good BBQ. For a change of pace in the morning, try Wraptitude which has healthier options versus the other places in the area (although there is also a Subway).

Overall, this area is a great place to recharge the batteries, unwind, and take advantage of the endless nearby hiking trails, and of course, Mt Hood! We also love that it is a short one hour drive from Portland. We will be back again, and since our stays have always been in the summer, looking forward to spending our first winter in Rhododendron soon.

We hiked in and around the Clackamas River area. We also canyoneered Pup Creek with the final rappel at lower Pup Creek Falls being for us the highlight of the trip. It rained a lot but what a relief as opposed to where we came from with 100 degree heat. the Clackamas river area is a great place to hike, the Clackamas river trail is a beautiful hike with waterfalls to visit and a rain forest of color.

Wraptitude is a great little hang out spot, located right on Hwy 26. Good food, beer selection, and a fun back yard. Ski Bowl offered some fun, unexpected activities such as a chairlift ride to the top of the mountain and disc golf back down. It was great.

Loved listening to the river while eating on the front or back picnic benches. The hot tub was wonderful at night to also listen to the river running. Stores were close by and we loved going up to visit Timberline Lodge where the Shinning was filmed, or at least the outside parts of the movie. Great week at this location!
  • Rhododendron

This rental was absolutely beautiful and relaxing. There's nothing better then sitting in the hot tub looking at the stars. We even got to feed a raccoon!!! We hiked up Mt Hood and the waterfalls near Bridal Veil Falls. It was amazing. It gave my boyfriend and I a chance to really get out and away from everyone for a nice peaceful getaway. I recommend this place.

The close acess to the river is awesome; however, the description of how to get to the Zig Zag is incorrect instead of the suggested McFarland rd (which ends in no trespassing signs on each side) it is Arthur Hailey rd that leads to the river.

Took several walks on the property and we absolutely LOVE this place. It is MAGICAL. Old fashioned home cooking was a nice experience at the Barlow Trail, VERY simple fare cooked well and with fresh ingredients. Chicken and Dumplings was just like my grandmothers and the fried apple pie made us all say "are we at a state fair?!". Skyway was a cool and funky spot for drinks and live music but the food we sampled (so-so bbq and a "bahn mi" that tasted more like a reuben) didn't live up to the potential of the ingredients, same could be said for Mt Hood Brewery (doughy pizza and overly acidic salad dressing). Check out the Mt Hood Museum for interesting info on the area and it's evolution and do not miss Timberline Lodge which is a museum in and of itself. Very friendly staff everywhere we went.
