About Belmopan

Belmopan rated 4.0 out of 5 based on 5 reviews Belmopan, Cayo District

Experience the vibrant culture of Belize in the new capital city of Belmopan! Home to 20,000 people, this diverse city has a laid-back and welcoming atmosphere. Thanks to its smaller size, you can easily walk around, see the sights, and immerse yourself fully in the culture.

Where is Belmopan?

50 miles inland from the Caribbean and near the Belize River Valley, you'll find this safe and colorful new capital city! Built in the 1960's as a response to hurricane damage in Belize City, Belmopan sits less than 50 miles from the old capital and offers a protected location. Located at the foot of the Mountain Pine Ridge foothills, it offers beautiful views and easy access to many outdoor activities in the area!

Markets in Belmopan

Every Tuesday and Friday, the city center turns into a market that attracts thousands of people. Here you will find farmers, fisher folk, butchers, artisans, and pet vendors selling everything. With your choice of produce, clothing, furniture, artwork, and even exotic pets, you can easily find a souvenir or two to bring back home! Purchase fresh ingredients to try cooking the local cuisine in your kitchen or try the delicious street food. To experience the market at its busiest and most exciting time, make sure to come in the early morning because many vendors shut down at the hottest time of day.

Things To Do in Belmopan

Just outside the bustle of the city is a diverse and beautiful landscape, featuring the jungle, Mayan ruins, and a number of caves. Some of the must-see tours include tubing through the underground caves in Blue Hole National Park and Jaguar Paw, night-trekking through the jungle to see nocturnal plants and animals, and ziplining through the jungle canopy.

Step into another world at Caracol, the country's biggest Mayan ruin. Caracol features a number of breathtaking structures, including the tallest of all, Ca'ana or "Place of the Sky." During your stay, make sure to pay a visit to the Mayan ceremonial site at St. Herman's Cave, where you will be awed by ancient artifacts among glistening stalactites and stalagmites.

For a unique vacation in an exciting atmosphere, our rental homes in Belmopan will let you stay in comfort while enjoying the vibrant culture of Belize right outside your front door!
