It has been called a "surfer's haven," a "wave machine," and the home of "some of the best, longest waves in the world." Welcome to Pavones on Costa Rica's Pacific shoreline, a beachfront hamlet known for its isolated position, its quiet unpaved roads, and what is thought to be the second-longest left break in the entire world. The rugged journey to get here makes the reward all the sweeter - and one that you'll savor in the tranquility of our Pavones vacation homes.
Tucked away in the scenic coastal province of Puntarenas, Pavones is stunningly secluded in one of Costa Rica's southernmost points. The town, which sits at the meeting of the Pacific Ocean and the Golfo Dulce, is most easily accessed from Golfito 30 miles to the north. You'll also be just 13 miles south of Playa Zancudo and 207 miles south of the capital city of San José.
With left-hand breaks that are second in length only to those in Chicama, Peru, Pavones is legendary among the world's most talented surfers. These waves are perfect for lefties who surf with their right foot forward, allowing them to face waves that are pushed into the Golfo Dulce by strong southern swells.
It is the coincidence of Pavones' peninsula geography that creates these waves - and it is the rainy season between April and November that sees them at their finest. Just be advised that the wet season can turn the local roads into mud, and that Pavones' main break should be surfed by experienced athletes only. There are a variety of other quality waves nearby for all levels and preferences. For everyone else, there's a seawall that offers a prime viewing spot, as well as a gorgeous, palm-lined beach that is ideal for sunbathing, strolling, and wading.
Thanks to their quiet rainforest location within steps of the Pacific Ocean, our Pavones vacation rentals are a wonderful place to experience the pura vida of Costa Rica.
Head south from the center of town to find the shallow Río Claro, a calm swimming spot for families with children. Anglers will have ample opportunities for sport fishing on the ocean while nature lovers can retreat into the forest for a canopy tour or a day of horseback riding.
Pavones is just 38 miles south of the Golfito National Wildlife Refuge, where you'll find nearly 7,000 acres of evergreen forests with black palms and resident mammals that include collared peccaries and agoutis. The dense trees of neighboring Piedras Blancas National Park are also famous as one of the last remaining homes of the jaguar in Costa Rica.
Discover an authentic retreat into the wonders of nature - our spectacular Pavones vacation rentals will help you get away from it all!
