About La Romana
Attractions

Once an oil boomtown, then a major exporter of sugar, and now a mid-size city with thriving tourism, La Romana has seen plenty of change since its founding in 1897. Its verdant landscape of sugar cane plantations, white sand beaches, sprawling golf courses, and architectural wonders now attracts visitors by the thousands each year, who are drawn to the city’s numerous cultural and outdoor attractions.

With La Romana’s year-round tropical temperatures and picture-perfect vistas, you’ll find your own slice of paradise – and a prime jumping-off point for all your adventures in the Dominican Republic – when you stay in one of our vacation rentals!

Where is La Romana?

Nestled along the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, La Romana is the biggest city in a province of the same name, and the seventh largest city in the country, with a population of just over 130,000. Within a day’s drive, you’ll find the beach resort town of Punta Cana 48 miles to the east, the peninsular region of Samana 150 miles to the north, and the country’s capital of Santo Domingo de Guzmán 76 miles west.

Things to Do in La Romana

Begin your trip in style amongst the eclectic shopping boutiques at Casa de Campo, a sprawling 7,000-acre hotel, resort, marketplace, and residential community just over two miles east of city center. Pick up an authentic carnival mask and other island keepsakes at Jenny Polanco Boutique, browse the huge variety of hand-rolled Dominican cigars (second only in worldwide notoriety to Cuban cigars) at Cabinet Tobacco Boutique, and get outfitted in the latest high fashion threads at Carmen Sol NY.

Continue your shopping spree seven miles east of central La Romana at Altos de Chavón of Casa de Campo, a 16th-century Mediterranean village replica perched above the Chavón River in the heart of the lush Dominican countryside. Here you’ll find art galleries selling paintings from local artists, an archaeological museum offering a fascinating look at the area’s natural history, a 5,000-seat, Grecian-style amphitheater where everyone from Sting to Latin greats like Marc Anthony and Gloria Estefan has played, and the St. Stanislaus Church, a beautiful stone church and event space built in 1979.

Later in the day, lather on some sunscreen and head out for some fun in the sun, sand, and surf at any of La Romana’s renowned beaches, which include La Caleta Beach, where the locals go to swim, Bayahibe Beach, favored for snorkeling and boating, and Dominicus Beach, a less crowded stretch of sand between five resorts.

If you like to golf, you’ll love the options for going a full 18 holes on some of the prettiest oceanfront greens on earth. Tee off on Casa de Campos’ three award-winning courses – Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, and The Links – designed by pro golf Hall of Famer Pete Dye, or, if you’d rather go only 9 holes, try out the executive course at Nueva Romana Beach Golf Club.

Finish out the day with a deep tissue massage to relieve any aching muscles at Metamorphosis Spa, then head back to your cozy vacation rental for some satisfying sleep.

Day Trips from La Romana

Throughout the year, average temperatures hover around 66 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, making outdoor excursions popular during every season. Bring some sturdy hiking boots for a trek on the Padre Nuestro Eco-touristic and Archaeological Trail in 120-square-miles of dense, tropical forest at East National Park just southeast of La Romana. Wind along this trail through both dry and humid biomes with an experienced guide who will point out ancient rock art from the Taino native people who once inhabited the area. You’ll also have opportunities to stop and admire several freshwater underground caves, and if you’re the daring type, you can even dive in to explore.

The two-hour round-trip catamaran ride to Isla Saona is an excursion not to be missed! It rewards all adventurous visitors with sweeping white sand beaches, a beach barbecue with fresh-caught lobster and octopus, and plenty of time to rest and relax in the shade of palm trees. It’s fun for the whole family!

The scintillating sights and sounds of the culturally unique Dominican Republic  guarantees an unforgettable stay. Now you can experience all the best attractions of this vibrant country from one of our La Romana vacation rentals!
