History of Celle Ligure

Originally a small fishing village dating back to the 11th century, the old town of Celle Ligure has maintained its charm over the years. The current town along the coast developed in later years, however the city gets its name from the Italian word "cellae," in reference to the stores of boats once kept in the village. 

By the 17th and 18th centuries, increased maritime commerce lead to Celle Ligure's growth - it eventually became one of the wealthiest and most active towns on the Riviera. Ever since the railway came to the area in the mid-1800s, port activity has decreased and summer vacationers have flocked to the area for the sun, beach, and the beautiful sea.  

Things to Do in Celle Ligure

With a long stretch of beautiful sandy beaches, Celle Ligure offers plenty of outdoor recreation, beach activities, and boating out on the Ligurian Sea. Behind the seafront, you'll find an old road called Romana that leads to several smaller towns nearby - complete with stunning views of the shimmering sea and lush green hills along the way. 

In town, explore plenty of architecture dating back centuries. The town hall Palazzo Ferri is a great place to start, then you can head into the historic center and stroll through the quaint colorful buildings and local architecture. In the Piani district east of town, you'll find lots of modern villas, amenities, and hip restaurants. 

From classic seafood dishes to amazing street food, Celle Ligure has no shortage of delicious Italian cuisine, Don't miss the famous Ligurian focaccia! After all the food, you may want to rent a bicycle and ride around to sight-see that way. Sports fans will want to head to the modern sports stadium with a full-size soccer field, and tour famous bicycle factory founded by the great cyclist, Gepin Olmo.
