Where is Guanajuato, Mexico?

About 36 miles east of Leon, and 230 miles northwest of Mexico City, Guanajuato is set right in the heart of central Mexico. Things to Do in Guanajuato

Take your special someone on a walking tour through the famous alleys, where it's said that two star-crossed lovers met to kiss in secret. Take a creepy and awe-inspiring tour of the Mummy Museum to learn about the naturally mummified bodies that were discovered between the 19th and 20th centuries. One of the most popular spots in Guanajuato, you'll be able to take a guided tour and learn all about the rich history behind the iconic figures. 

Spend a quiet morning visiting the home of the famous artist, Diego Rivera. Afterwards, take the funicular tram car up to the enjoy the sweeping vistas of the city. Take a few panoramic shots, and don't forget to take a selfie with the statue of Pipila, one of the local heroes. 

For lunch, wander through the open-air market to sample the abundant bounty and stunning flavors of the local produce. Grab a map to plan out a self-guided tour of the local churches and cathedrals, and then go to the Alhóndiga de Granaditas and see the museum's expansive collection of historical artifacts and artistic expressions housed within its walls.

Make the quick trip to the famous city of Dolores Hidalgo to learn about the birthplace of Mexican independence. The rallying cry for freedom spread its roots in this city, so it's worthwhile to take a tour or explore the vibrant streets on your own. 

Your inner child will awaken when you see the beautiful Baroque and Colonial architecture of downtown San José. Take a few pictures of the towering Parroquia de San Pedro Apostol, before heading inside to see the intricate mosaics, frescos, and artwork that line the impressive walls. If you're feeling tired, be sure to snag a snack at one of the mouthwatering restaurants before heading back to your vacation rental.
