If you're looking for a unique spin on your next Nicaraguan vacation
, you won't do much better than a stay in one of our vacation rentals in the small beach town of Popoyo. Located in the Tola municipality of Rivas
, this unassuming town on the Emerald Coast offers a wealth of sights and sounds you can't find anywhere else in Latin America! From incredible surfing and natural beauty to the serene atmosphere of the town, you've got an incredible adventure ahead of you.
Life in Popoyo
The peaceful town of Popoyo is a small one, especially after a tsunami in 1992 devastated the town. However, in the intervening years, the small village has recovered and flourished into a world-famous hub for tourists.
Walk the streets and breathe in the fresh ocean air before heading inland to admire the rolling hills and tracts of farmland that flank the city to the northeast. If you need to stop for a bite to eat, treat yourself to an extravagant lunch in one of the hotel restaurants, or have a sunny meal outdoors by the beach at The Barrel. Afterward, follow the Calle Guasacate north for some shopping at the Finca W A Y U U shopping mall.
Beachside Luxury at Popoyo
Of course, the main reason to visit Popoyo has to be its world-renowned beach. The beach has plenty to offer for casual tourists simply looking to relax, with soft sand that extends for miles, perfect for romantic walks or running around with the kids. Be sure to check out all the colorful creatures in the tide pools!
What makes Popoyo's beaches special, though, is the ocean itself. It provides enough bounty for nearly 100 species of birds to call the area home and provides sea turtles with the perfect place to come ashore and lay their eggs.
On top of that, Popoyo is a surfer's paradise, offering legendary waves. With currents so consistently suited for surfing, the area hosted the ISA World Surf Championships in 2015. Rent a board and experience the majesty of the sport for yourself when you stay in one of our vacation rentals!
Day Trips from Popoyo
Popoyo has more than enough to keep you occupied on your vacation, but if you'd like a change of pace, you have plenty of options nearby. More seaside fun awaits at several nearby beaches, with the isolated Playa Gavilán to the north and the more popular Playa Santana to the south. If you want to get away from the shore for a day or so, follow the winding Rio Nagualapa northward, stopping at interesting shops and restaurants along the way.
Your next trip to Nicaragua's Emerald Coast will be fantastic
