Our beautiful Río San Juan vacation homes let you experience this gorgeous part of the world with comfort, convenience, and privacy.

Where is Río San Juan, Nicaragua?

The department of Río San Juan is located catty-corner from Granada, across Lake Nicaragua on the lake's southwest edge between the South Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Things to Do in Río San Juan

Take a look at the area's history in San Carlo by visiting San Francisco Convent, which houses a museum of Pre-Columbian statues, and Iglesia de Mancarron. Make your way to El Castillo to the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception to see where historic battles between the Spanish and English, French, and Dutch pirates occurred.

The villages that dot the banks of the San Juan River and the rest of the department offer an immersive experience to the area's natural habitats. Bordering the river in El Castillo is the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, one of Nicaragua's best-protected reserves, where you can see exotic, native animals like parrots, hummingbirds, toucans, sloths, pacas, pumas, jaguars, turtles, iguanas, and poison dart frogs.

At the southern tip of Lake Cocibolca lies Centro Ecologico Los Guatuzos, Nicaragua's only internationally registered tropical wetland area, which also boasts a wildlife refuge and a rainforest. Take a boat ride and soak up the sights and sounds of the jungle, head to the far east side of Rio San Juan and explore Rama Rainforest, or set out to experience the fishing Nicaragua is known for with a charter and snag your own tarpon.

Visit Solentiname, an archipelago in southeast Lake Cocibolca, to view and purchase locally made sculptures, paintings, and other arts and crafts. The worthy payoff at the end of your day in Solentiname might be a stunning sunset, so stick around and enjoy it!

Whether you're coming to Nicaragua for a visit or just passing through on your way to settle in at one of our lovely vacation homes in León, be sure to reserve some time in one of our Río San Juan vacation rentals and steep yourself in the luxuriant natural beauty of this stunning country.
