About Observatory
Observatory (affectionately known as "Obs" by the locals) is a trendy, bohemian neighborhood in Cape Town where students and artists congregate to learn and create. Whether you're visiting to explore the many parks and nature preserves, to sun yourself on some of Cape Town's best beaches, or to stroll museums and historic streets, our Observatory vacation homes are perfect for your visit to South Africa.

Where is Observatory?

Observatory lies on the lower north-facing slopes of Devil's Peak, a striking, 3,300-foot mountain rising beside Table Mountain. The suburb of Mowbray runs along the southern edge, while Salt River can be found to the northwest. Access to this part of town is easy thanks to Settlers Way and Kromboom Parkway, both of which frame the district. This area is also only an eight-mile drive from the Cape Town International Airport.

Things to Do in Observatory

Sitting immediately adjacent to Table Mountain National Park (an expansive Natural World Heritage site) with its peaks, hiking and biking trails, and diverse wildlife populations, guests of our Observatory vacation rentals will want to spend plenty of time exploring the great outdoors. Walk or bike to the peak of Table Mountain and enjoy a picnic with a view. Bring your camera to snap photos of birds, reptiles, wild cats, and Chacma baboons as you hike through the forest.

Back in town, visit the historic Royal Observatory, where you can check out the museum and take a peek through the McClean Telescope. Enjoy a meal at one of Observatory's popular restaurants including the Reverie Social Table (a prix fixe, table d'hôte style eatery), The Pot Luck Club (for tapas), and Mzansi, offering African fare.

Visitors to Observatory will also delight in the number of eclectic and vintage shops including many with a fun, "new age" style appealing to both the young and the young at heart. Those traveling with dogs might seek out the dog-friendly walking paths along the river bank and the dog park on Arnold Street.

Whether you're looking to get out in the wild, walk the pristine beaches, shop downtown, or sample some of the best cuisine in Western Cape, you'll find it all close by our Observatory vacation rentals.
