About Western Cape

It is the southernmost province on the African continent - the place where legendary explorers such as Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama once rounded the Cape of Good Hope. Welcome to the Western Cape, the picturesque tip of South Africa where the mountains, the Winelands, and the oceans meet. You'll experience wonders of nature and immerse yourself in an ever-present history and culture when you escape to one of our Western Cape vacation rentals.

Where is Western Cape?

Western Cape is the L-shaped province that hugs the southern tip of South Africa, stretching northward and eastward from the Cape of Good Hope. Bordered by Northern Cape and Eastern Cape, Western Cape features several hundred miles of shoreline on both the Atlantic and Southern Indian Oceans. Its capital, Cape Town, sits in the region's southwestern corner, and its southernmost point, Cape Agulhas, is just a few thousand miles from Antarctica.

Things to Do in Western Cape

Well-connected by air and rail, the port city of Cape Town is the beating heart of Western Cape, offering an intoxicating blend of history and scenery.

Take a hike or ride the cable car to the summit of Table Mountain, the city's most renowned landmark, and explore the wild coast of the Cape Point Nature Reserve to the south. Just off the mainland, you'll feel the humbling weight of history at Robben Island, the site where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years of his 27-year incarceration.

Retreat from the bustle of Cape Town in the Winelands, where Route 62 has gained fame as one of the longest scenic wine roads in the world. Take your time on this nearly 500-mile route to Port Elizabeth, or visit Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington, Robertson, Ceres, and Franschhoek - an easy drive from Cape Town.

One of the most beloved attractions of Western Cape is the Garden Route, a stretch of the N2 that passes through small towns, coastal forests, and beautiful beaches on its way east.

Seasonal Activities in Western Cape

Even closer to Cape Town is the world-famous Whale Coast, where visitors regularly glimpse pods of whales in Hermanus, Arniston, Cape Agulhas, and the De Hoop Nature Reserve between June and October. Thrill seekers can even drop into an underwater cage for an up-close view of a great white in Shark Alley - the waters that surround Dyer Island just off the shore.

Heading north from Cape Town? A journey along the windswept west coast will bring you to the aptly named West Coast National Park, which is known for its colorful sprays of wildflowers in August and September.
