Spanish for "sand dune," El Médano is a town located along the southern coast of the beautiful island of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. Just five miles from the Tenerife South Airport, El Médano (a town that proudly embraces its Spanish heritage) is situated near the Playa Grande and Playa Tejita beaches. Laid back and friendly, El Médano is frequented by surfers and beach-going families, so you're sure to fit right in.
The regular trade winds that sweep the resort here (often up to 290 days a year) make it absolutely ideal for both kitesurfing and windsurfing - with frequent competitions for both. If you decide it looks like fun, there are plenty of local businesses that will rent equipment and offer lessons to help get you out in the surf!
Take to the sea to enjoy a dolphin-spotting or whale-watching tour, or head out on a chartered fishing boat. Golfers take note - there are several superb 18- and 27-hole golf courses within a few miles of town including Golf del Sur and Golf las Américas. You might also check out the former home of the Canary Islands' only saint, Hermano Pedro. This curious cave, tucked away in a pumice gulley just outside of Médano, is a truly unique sight.
While there's no end of fun to be had on the neighboring white sands, those wishing to survey the region from an elevated perspective are encouraged to climb Montaña Roja ("The Red Mountain"), the 550-foot red rock volcanic peak located just a mile-and-a-half from downtown. This can be a tricky ascent, but the spectacular views of the bay, coves, and the mountains of Arona and Adeje to the west are certainly worth the effort! If gorgeous landscapes are your thing, be sure to check out the stunning cliffs of Los Gigantes in the northwest corner of the island.
For a number of other hiking and mountain biking options, head 25 miles north to Parque Natural de la Corona Forestal, where you can walk for miles on pine-forested trails, or head northwest and try the Arona to Ifonche circuit, one of the most popular walks in the south of Tenerife. After a full day of activities, your vacation rental will feel that much more comfortable!
El Médano, put simply, is a quiet coastal town that caters to both the beachgoer and the surfer. You won't find too many overpriced shopping centers here, but you will find independent boutiques selling locally produced wares. If you want to check out some high-end shopping, head up to San Isidro, just two-and-a-half miles north where you'll find everything from supermarkets to shopping malls, or head west to the bustling resort town of Playa de las Americas.
Considered Tenerife's "coolest" resort, the town of El Médano is quiet and very welcoming with lots of local flavor. Sample the French, Spanish, Japanese, and Italian cuisine available in a number of excellent restaurants and tapas bars along Paseo Marcial García, including the highly rated Familiar, a seafood restaurant regarded as the best place in El Médano for paella, and Tasquita del Medano, which is known for its terrific Italian food and friendly service.
There are a number of other restaurants, bars, and coffee shops located in the town square, but you might explore the narrow streets and keep your eyes peeled for more local bars and pavement cafes. And don't forget to sample the amazing ice cream of Gelateria Demaestri! For more dining options, you might visit nearby Costa Adeje, which offers an even more diverse selection.
If you're looking for a quiet place for the family to relax upon sandy beaches or a windswept, surfers' paradise where the locals greet you with a smile and the weather is perfect most days of the year, look no further than our cozy and welcoming vacation rentals in El Médano, on the breathtaking island of Tenerife.
