Smaller than Gran Canaria's main city of Las Palmas but just as memorable, the picturesque village of Santa Lucía de Tirajana is an excellent home base for exploring the island. With a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, Santa Lucía de Tirajana is less touristy than other parts of the island, making it perfect for visitors who want to get to know the area on their own terms. Stay in one of our vacation rentals to ensure your trip to Santa Lucía de Tirajana is everything you deserve!
Where is Santa Lucía de Tirajana?
Nestled on the steep slopes of the Gran Canaria mountains, Santa Lucía de Tirajana is 35 miles southwest of Las Palmas. A drive of just 20 miles will bring you to the Gran Canaria airport, and it's only 15 miles to the coast. There are several national parks nearby to explore, as well as numerous sites of historical significance where you can glimpse into a fascinating past.
Spend a quiet day within the village learning about local history at the Museo Castillo de la Fortaleza. Archaeological artifacts shed light on the Canary Islands' indigenous inhabitants, as well as artifacts predating the fall of the Roman empire, and a reconstruction of a traditional 17th-century Canarian bedroom.
The Santa Lucía market occurs twice a week, on Sundays next to the Santa Lucía de Tirajana city hall and on Wednesdays in the city of Vecindario. Shop for souvenirs among the handmade crafts, or fill up a bag with fresh local produce and head back to your vacation rental to cook up a delicious meal.
When you need some exercise, go for a hike in Pilancones Natural Park and enjoy incredible views from the peaks, as well as a first-hand look at diverse flora and protected endemic species. The Guayadeque ravine is another popular hiking area, with trails leading through two historic cave villages, which were originally populated by the native Guanches. After a full day of hiking, grab a bite to eat (or a cold drink) at Tagoror, a restaurant built directly into the caves.
The city of Vecindario, about 12 miles southeast of Santa Lucía, is a local shopping mecca with several distinct commercial districts. One of the main streets, Avenida de Canarias, stretches for two-and-a-half-miles and is partially closed to vehicle traffic, providing a pleasant stretch for a leisurely stroll. The Atlantico shopping center is a more traditional mall-style retail area, with a food court and a movie theater at one end.
If you're looking for swimming and sunbathing, Gran Canaria has no shortage of soft sandy beaches. The resort town of Maspalomas on the island's southern end is the perfect place to lounge on the sand. The largest golf course on the island is also right here if you want a break from the ocean.
In addition to its golden beaches, Gran Canaria is widely known for its stellar windsurfing conditions. The closest beach to Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Pozo Izquierdo, is also one of the most popular windsurfing locations, and is home to the International Windsurfing Centre. Whether you're a seasoned windsurfer or brand new to the sport, you won't find a better place than this!
