About Girona

From vibrant port cities like Cadaqués and picturesque medieval towns like Besalú and Camprodon to lush national parks, the province of Girona has it all. Whether visiting for pleasure or for business, sample everything this region has to offer with one of our Girona vacation rentals.

Where is Girona, Spain?

Girona is a province of Spain located in the northeastern part of Catalonia. Along its northwest edge is the neighboring province of Lleida, while the enchanting city of Barcelona can be found just 70 miles southwest. To the north is the Regional Park of the Catalan Pyrenees and France beyond, while the Mediterranean Sea runs along Girona's eastern seaboard.

Things to Do in Girona

Start your adventures in the beautiful city of Girona, the capital of the province, located at the confluence of the Galligants, Güell, Onyar, and Ter rivers. Fans of Game of Thrones may recognize elements of Girona as it has stood in for the fictional city of Braavos. Walk the imposing walls, visit the Girona Cathedral, or shop and dine along the Rambla de la Llibertat.

While there are several national parks throughout the province that are definitely worth exploring, one of the most unique is the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, located about 40 miles northwest of the city of Girona. This park contains 46 inactive volcanoes, most of which can be hiked around or climbed.

Just 14 miles east of this volcanic expanse is the perfectly-preserved country town of Besalú, home to an impressive 340-foot Romanesque bridge (the only such bridge in Catalonia with seven arches) that straddles the Fluvia River. Besalú also offers quaint cobblestone streets, open-air markets, gorgeous twelfth-century churches, and a unique Jewish quarter, known as the Call.

Our Girona vacation rentals are sure to satisfy everyone from the visiting outdoor enthusiast to the history buff. Discover all that this diverse Spanish province has to offer.
