About Tenerife

Tenerife rated 4.7 out of 5 based on 3 reviews Tenerife,
Discover a world of sun, sand, adventure, and leisure on Tenerife, the largest and most populous of the seven Canary Islands. Encompassing an area of just 785 square miles, this beloved Spanish island is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the highest peak in all of Spain, and one of the most famous Carnival celebrations in the world. You'll soak in stunning seascapes, stroll through centuries of colonial history, and experience the island like a local when you book a stay in one of our wonderful Tenerife vacation rentals.

Where is Tenerife?

Located in the heart of the Canary Island archipelago off the western coast of Morocco, Tenerife marks one of the southernmost points in all of Europe. With the volcanic peak of Mt. Teide at its center, this Spanish island features a northern coast that is steep with cliffs and a southern coast known for its sun-filled sandy beaches. And with moderate temperatures that range from an average of 64 degrees in the winter to 79 degrees in the summer, it's no wonder that Tenerife attracts more than 10 million visitors each year.

Things to Do in Tenerife

Your vacation begins at the foot of Mt. Teide, the highest peak in Spain and the world's third-most voluminous volcano after Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Since its last eruption in 1798, this 12,198-foot summit has been protected as Teide National Park, where visitors can explore a vast network of hiking trails and learn about an incredible diversity of plant life.

Head northeast to reach Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the coastal capital city best known for its elaborate and flamboyant celebration of Carnival. For fifteen days each year, the city streets become a festival of music, dancing, and spectacular costumes, the pinnacle of which is the "El Coso" parade and party on Fat Tuesday.

You'll find nearly half of the island's population in or around Santa Cruz and its western neighbor, San Cristóbal de la Laguna, the island's cultural capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the first nonfortified Spanish colonial town, La Laguna is home to an astounding 627 preserved buildings, 361 of which were built between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Beaches in Tenerife

With 167 miles of Atlantic shoreline, Tenerife has no shortage of beautiful beaches, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and admiring the coastal views.

Head to the south to find El Médano, which offers more than half a mile of golden sand and excellent conditions for world-class windsurfing. Bringing the kids along? Try the family-friendly Playa de las Vistas near the port city of Los Cristianos, where breakwaters form a shallow and protected beach that is perfect for all ages. More than 25 species of whales can also be found near Tenerife's southwestern coast, creating wonderful opportunities for wildlife-watching.

The island's northern region is highlighted by Playa Jardin and its colorful flowers, as well as the stunning cliffs and rock formations of Playa El Bollullo. A visit to Teno Rural Park in Tenerife's northwest corner will also treat you to gorgeous views of eroded cliffs and an abundance of local wildlife.

Once you've arrived, you won't ever want to leave - plan your Atlantic escape at one of our unforgettable vacation rentals on the beautiful island of Tenerife.
