The bustling resort village of Farellones has been a popular skiing destination since the 1930s, and although the reputation is well-deserved, visitors to this charming town know that skiing is just one of many incredible outdoor activities you can enjoy here.
Perfect for a week-long getaway or a quick weekend trip, Farellones offers year-round entertainment in a scenic and secluded atmosphere. When you stay in one of our Farellones vacation rentals, you'll feel just like a local - and many of the accommodations are ski-in/ski-out.
Where is Farellones?
Nestled on the slopes of the Andes Mountains, Farellones is located in the commune of Lo Barnechea
, about 40 miles east of the Chilean capital of Santiago
. The only road that leads to Farellones is full of hairpin turns and requires four-wheel drive and snow chains in the winter. Three miles past Farellones, you'll find another ski village called El Colorado; a cable car connects the two villages, and together they are considered one ski area.
Winter Activities in Farellones
The Farellones/El Colorado ski area is considered more beginner-friendly (and affordable) than the ski areas farther up the mountain at La Parva and Valle Nevado, and boasts more than 60 runs of varying difficulties. The resort offers classes for both skiing and snowboarding if you're new to either sport or would just like a quick refresher.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers snow tubing, sledding, and snowshoeing. Guests can also rent fat-tire snow bikes and complete either a low-difficulty circuit or a more challenging route, suggested for experts. After a long day on the mountain, spend some time admiring the resort's collection of old-fashioned snow equipment before heading back to relax in your cozy vacation rental.
Summer Activities in Farellones
There's just as much fun to be had in Farellones in the summer as there is in the winter (perhaps even more so, without the weekend ski crowds from Santiago). The resort features three newly constructed mountain bike trails, one for beginners, one for intermediate riders, and one for experts.
Cool off with a quick ride in an inner tube down the 250-meter-long waterslide, or check out the zip line for a unique and thrilling view of the mountains. Take a scenic and leisurely ride on the Farellones Express ski lift. If you brought hiking boots, head to the Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary for an afternoon exploring the trails - and be sure to pack plenty of snacks, water, and sunscreen since services in the area are sparse.
If you're looking for a family-friendly getaway in the beautiful country of Chile
, you can't go wrong with a Farellones vacation rental. It may be difficult to get to the village, but after a relaxing, fun-filled trip, you'll find it's even harder to leave!
