If you're looking to experience the Los Lagos region's unique combination of stunning natural beauty with rich history and culture, you won't find many destinations better than Ancud! The unique geography and myriad sights and sounds are more than worth the trip southward - and our vacation rentals ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.
Tucked away in the southern end of Chile's lake country, Ancud sits at the north end of Chiloé Island. The rectangular geography and unparalleled vantage point of the surrounding ocean waters have drawn visitors to Ancud for hundreds of years. Ancud is one of the main points of contact between Chiloé and mainland of Chile. It's only 60 miles from Puerto Montt, which makes it an ideal destination for a visit or day trip if you're in the area. You can even take in the dramatic experience of the Chacao ferry ride on the way there and back!
While Ancud has plenty of modern buildings to rival cities like Santiago, the city's main architectural draw has to be its incredible history, which dates back to 1767. Many of the regular buildings, as well as the smaller churches spread through the town, offer all the hallmarks of the city's older, wooden architectural style.
The opportunities to observe the city's rich culture get even better at the northeast side of town. There's a charming gazebo in the city's Plaza de Armas just a few blocks away from the Museo Regional de Ancud, which features an eye-catching grounded ship outside the building. The museum is just a stone's throw from Ancud's towering cathedral, as well as the town hall.
To the north, meanwhile, lies the site of the Fuerte San Antonio. The remaining cannons, stone walls, and tower are a nice juxtaposition with the more modern spire monument in the center of the area. Plus, the ocean views are incredible!
Surrounded by water on three sides, Ancud is an amazing place to experience the Chilean coast. The Playa Arena Gruesa is a small, sandy beach to explore, with a nearby amphitheater that provides a nice vantage point for some amazing pictures. The northeast side of town even has a few campgrounds, letting you take in breathtaking sunsets and crisp ocean air firsthand. The constant presence of the waters surrounding Ancud makes even a routine trip to Dulce Diseño along Costanera Avenue something truly special.
