About Osorno
Surrounded by scenic forests, lagoons, and volcanoes, the city of Osorno offers great history, culture, and outdoor recreation. The city sits near the Rahue River in Southern Chile, and was once home to the German settlers of the 19th century, creating a unique history to explore through the culture and architecture in town.

Where is Osorno?

The historic city of Osorno is in the Los Lagos region of Southern Chile. Surrounded by scenic landscapes filled with forests, wildlife, and beautiful lagoons created by glaciers, there's plenty of natural sights to explore in the area. You'll be about 66 miles north of Puerto Montt and Lake Llanquihue, and 68 miles south of Valdivia on the coast. 

Things to Do in Osorno

Whether you're looking for ancient history or beautiful architecture, Osorno offers plenty to explore within city limits. Learn all about the history of the region at the Municipal Historical Museum, which includes exhibits about the indigenous Mapuche culture and the German colonization of the 19th century. 

On the banks of the Damas River, you can explore one of Osorno's several city parks at Chuyaca Park. At this popular spot, there's also the Pleistocene Park, which features sculptures of prehistoric animals from the area and fossil replicas based on finds dating back more than 12,000 years. 

The 18th-century Reina Luisa Fort is a must-see for anyone staying in an Osorno vacation rental. Learn about Osorno's colonial history and discover the ruins of the fort running along the Rahue River before heading back into town to do some shopping at the local craft stalls at Centro de Artesania. The neo-Gothic San Mateo Cathedral nearby is another must-see for architecture fans.

Puyehue National Park near Osorno

About 47 miles east of Osorno, Puyehue National Park sits in the scenic Andes mountain range that borders Chile and Argentina. This stunning park is filled with amazing natural sights from lagoons to volcanoes that will take your breath away. Be sure to bring your camera to try and capture the beauty!

Visit the forests filled with native coigüe trees and more than one hundred bird species. As one of the largest protected parks in the region, Puyehue is home to lots of native flora and fauna on the verge of extinction. 

Explore the slopes of the Puyehue Volcano for more scenic views, complete with surrounding waterfalls and glacier lagoons. There are several ski areas for winter excursions, plus thermal resorts for a relaxing hot springs experience. There are also several lakes, including the Rupanco and Puyehue Lakes, for boating and fishing excursions.
