History of Winthrop, ME

The town of Winthrop surrounds the area around northern Annabessacook Lake to southern Maranacook Lake. In 1768, the area was first colonized by John Chandler, who built a sawmill and a gristmill. The area was a hub for many industries in the following years, from a tannery to a blacksmith shop. 

With its prime location on some of Maine's most popular lakes, the town of Winthrop eventually became a summer resort destination. Today, it's a popular place to visit - stay in one of our Winthrop vacation rentals for an unforgettable family vacation or group getaway. 

Activities in Winthrop, ME

Explore the downtown area of Winthrop, which is also referred to as Winthrop Village. This quaint area features plenty of local shops and restaurants. There's also a public beach right on the lake where you can enjoy the summer sun with your local ice cream cone in hand. 

The true highlight of Winthrop is the lakeside location. With several lakes at your fingertips, there are plenty of water sports to choose from. Go on a fishing excursion or plan a boating trip with the whole group on Maranacook Lake.

Anyone looking for a quality hike through rich and colorful nature should lace up their hiking shoes and wander up the Mt. Pisgah Fire Trail. Walk through fields of colorful wildflowers, then climb the historic fire tower for amazing views of the area!

Seasonal Festivals in Winthrop, ME

In the summer months, you'll find all kinds of fun events and fairs. This classic summer town offers endless seasonal events, from the Norcross Point concert series to Sidewalk Art Shows to the Fourth of July fireworks celebration. 

The annual fair in Monmouth just a few miles south features music, fireworks, games for kids, and even a pig scramble! There's also a museum and theater in Monmouth for more activities in town.
