About Dayton

Don't let Dayton's modest size fool you: it is home to tons of character and verve that will make your Montana retreat one to remember, and our splendid vacation rentals allow you to experience the area like a true Montanan.

Where is Dayton, MT?

Located in Montana's Lake County, Dayton lies on the west shore of Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. With a population of fewer than a hundred people, the area offers a striking escape in the Land of the Shining Mountains. The neighboring communities of Rollins and gorgeous Lakeside offer a similar environment while the artistic community of Bigfork lies across the lake.

Things to Do in Dayton, MT

The Big Arm section of the Flathead Lake State Park consists of dozens of acres of nature just waiting to be explored. Flathead Lake offers a great opportunity for fishing, swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, and more. Plus, the campground contains 41 campsites and three yurts, which provide modern camping comforts.

The largest island in Flathead Lake is Wild Horse Island, a primitive island of nearly 2,200-acres that is accessible only by boat. Located on the west shore of the lake, this island is home to wildlife such as bald eagles, bighorn sheep, and yellow-pine chipmunks. Visitors may also get lucky and spot a few wild horses!

Because of Dayton's consistent winds, its waters are ideal for sailing. Dayton Bay and nearby Big Arm Bay are especially perfect for water cruising. The Dayton Yacht Harbor is a full-service marina that offers a sailing school to assist new sailors or those hoping to polish their skills. The harbor provides different types of sailboats for day and night use.

Wine connoisseurs will appreciate Dayton's family-owned Mission Mountain Winery. Producing six types of wine including Pinot noir and Gewurztraminer, this winery is internationally recognized and has received many gold medals for its spectacular wines. Mission Mountain Winery's tasting room is open seasonally from the beginning of May to the end of October. Guests may also arrange for private tastings with hors d'oeuvres.
