I needed a small quiet place to rest for a few days, and the Crab Shack provided that for me. My favorite aspect is the small yard out back with a fire pit and space to pitch a tent amid the sea grass and the back deck to sit on. The cabin is comfortable and the gas fireplace provides great heat on colder nights. I brought my own additional blankets and a good cooking pot, and I recommend that guests don't expect to rely on the pots and pans supplied in the cabinets if you intend to do any serious home cooking. This is a good spot for quiet time away.
One of my favorite places. Thank you for sharing.
We loved the rustic get away from fancy dancy and the dogs felt so welcome. The murphy bed was very charming and thank you for keeping it historical. If we wanted marble counter tops and fancy decor we can always find such a place, but the location of the beach out the front door and the view from the couch was unsurpassable. Take care, the dogs and their owners , Bruce
It was so peaceful! Watching sunsets and walking the beach made our vacation perfect.
The location doesn’t get any better than this. Right on the beach everything that you need. We come back every year.
Having a deck and yard was lovely. Walk to the beach was even better! Area was quiet and didn’t have any neighbors so very private.
We enjoyed our stay at the Crab Cottage. The proximity to the beach was the best feature. Our kids set up a tent in the back yard and slept in that with the dogs. It was just perfect.
Now some details about the cabin for future guests. The cabin was very clean. It was just as advertised. It is a small cabin and really can sleep 6 very close people. The stairs to the sleeping loft are very steep and narrow, you need to be nimble to navigate them. The shower was good and powerful with plenty of clean towels. We had a great time there. However if you are used to 5 star resorts this may not be the place for you. If you are looking for a cozy retreat with your family right on the beach then this place is perfect.
The ocean view and beach access is incredible. We’ve been there probably three times and no one has been in the next door houses, so feels very private.
This is a low key cottage, with a very old with an interesting history, and it's had some very useful updates. It's a solid building with some patchwork fixes here and there, and all the necessities are very adequate. My only concern was the loft guardrail which could use a major update. The fish netting is only attached via staples, but it may slow your fall as long as you don't fall through the loose portion at the bottom. Gaps between posts would not stop a child from falling through, so keep that in mind if you're traveling with children. We kept suitcases and other hindrances along the edge to discourage anyone from walking near it. The ladder to get to the loft takes some getting used to, but it's pretty solid. There is a typical but strong musty scent that permeates the premises so you will need to wash everything you bring home to remove the scent. HOWEVER: WE LOVED STAYING HERE and these caveats would not stop us from returning again and again. Access to the beach is fantastic, view of the ocean was perfect, and the street out front was quiet. For a family of two adults, two high energy elementary school aged children and an energetic dog, it worked out great. This is not a high-end rental, but it will pack in a lot of fond memories for your vacation.
Hi, Karen! Thank you for telling us about your visit. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and hope you will be pleased to hear the handrail has been fixed. Please come again soon!
No privacy even inside the house. Local was amazing though, right on the beach with nice trail. Neighbors were rowdy.
We are glad to hear you enjoyed the home despite the decor. We encourage our guests to view the listing photos to ensure the home has everything they are looking for from layout/decor to amenities. We appreciate your feedback and hope to host you again soon!
I loved opening the back door onto the deck and being able to walk directly onto the beach and into the ocean. Everything was as pictured, this place is loaded with charm.
We stepping out the back door and seeing and hearing the waves.
Well-stocked with towels, shampoo and conditioner, soap, coffee and filters, kitchen equipment that's old but functional. (Could use some standard kitchen knives, though.) Wi-fi, outdoor BBQ, shower and other basics worked well. Ceiling in the sleeping loft is low so tall people might have trouble up there.
Great little cottage with a huge view!!
2nd time staying here and we just love it. Can’t beat the views, rain or shine it’s perfect. We love the floor upgrade too! Thank you for having such a gem available to the public.
We loved the location, the grill, the little yard with path to the beach, view out the windows, and the random coyote that visited us. It comfortably sleeps four, one kid per night ended up on the couch (family of five). Limited amenities for kids, bring your own beach toys/music/dvds/etc.
The cabin was clean and well equipped for our arrival. It’s rustic but that’s part of the fun, set the right expectation and you won’t be disappointed, it’s a fair price. The deck, view and location can not be beat!!
We would stay again.
Clean, warm and welcoming cottage right on the beach! Best weekend ever for my daughter and I. Can't wait for our next visit!
This quirky, funky cottage looks out on the Pacific Ocean. That is the best part of being here, steps from the beach. Basic needs are supplied, plenty towels, kitchen utensils, decent beds. Nice porch, fire pit. A bit worn, but comfortable.
Although the cabin was a little run down, they have kept up with the important maintenance (roof/windows/heat) and the fact that you can walk out the front door to the wide open beach is fantastic. And the view from inside is spectacular with a nice deck.
I’m so glad that I rented Crab Cottage! The proximity to the beach, cozy interior, and helpful, responsive communication from the owners made this a place I will certainly book again!
The cabin is funky and old and not in a bad way, but you should be prepared. They’ve made a few upgrades like new flooring and the back door older reviews mentioned. If you have kids, be aware that the stairs to the loft are VERY steep, one of our kids had a scary slip about halfway down, and the railing of the loft is just an old net that’s falling apart, so you’ll need to be on alert. Bring your own pillows too, they’re flat as pancakes. If you have a mold sensitivity, this place is also probably not for you. But the view, beach access, and porch are incredible, so if you can let the rest slide, it may still be worth the visit for you.
Hi, Wade! We are so glad you chose to stay with us and are sorry to read you were not fully satisfied. The property manager is working on getting the railing for the staircase updated. New pillows have been purchased, and the owners are planning several updates for the cottage. We hope you will come back to see the improvements!
Stayed for an early Valentine's Day getaway, and we got SNOW! The cottage was cozy and clean and was easy to prep meals in the kitchen with the groceries we brought. Water was hot which was a blessing after a cold outing. We look forward to future stays at Crab Cottage knowing how great a time we had in an unexpected snow storm.
I loved how quaint and tidy the little place is. It was really wonderful to relax with the ocean right at my front door! I grew up here in Moclips so it was like coming home.
This place was pretty gross and needs to be entirely redone. I saw in the reviews that there were going to be renovations done, but they have not yet happened. For starters, there are ants everywhere. They were crawling all over the furniture and kitchen counters and our poor dogs who were just trying to sleep on the floor. There were also lots of spiders, and tons of spider webs everywhere on the ceilings. The back door is still broken and unusable. You can tell the wood is rotting away at the bottom and was letting moisture into the house. You can also see that the moisture has gotten into the floor under the back door and is sagging and might fall in. There are some obviously moldy spots near said door and in the bathroom, and the exposed insulation is black in places and needing to be replaced. We had a hard time breathing while in the house because we are sensitive to mold. The utensils were also mostly all dirty. The furniture was all broken or loose and in danger of breaking while sitting on it.
We tried to spend as much time as possible not in the house. If you do stay here, please be aware of these things. And bring all of your own kitchen ware and furniture. Maybe some ant traps. Definitely a camping situation.
The location was beautiful though, however not worth the cost of this dump.
Hello Erin, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are disappointed to hear that we dropped the ball, as this is not the high standard of guest satisfaction that we hold ourselves to. Our local manager has confirmed that the renovation is complete and the door has been replaced. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you will give us another chance to impress you.
This was a lovely little cottage which had an amazing view of the ocean, right from the living room. There were some cosmetic issues which could have brought this property up to 5 stars, such as replacing worn linoleum and tightening the oven handle. There were also a few kitchen items that were dusty or splattered so more attention to details in cleaning would have been nice. We could not find any pot holders, which could have simply been forgotten after laundering. All in all, we had a wonderful time at this cottage.
What a charming and nostalgic crab cottage! We love the rustic charm and the feel of camping on the beach with just the bare necessities, which was exactly what we were after. It was clean and while in need of some updates offered a historical charm and was the perfect get away to effectively "unplug" from city life in.
Loved the beach and beach access. The cottage was dirty and infested with ants and termites. We like rustic places but this cottage needs some tlc. Very dissatisfied. Paid for 4 nights and only stayed one.
Thank you Janet, for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry for the issues you encountered during your stay. The owner of this home called out a professional exterminator to review the home and has taken care of any potential bug infestation so future guests do not encounter these issues. Also, we are happy to report this home has undergone renovations and has had many updates. We hope to have the opportunity to host you again, in the future, for a much more enjoyable stay.
The view off the back was wonderful. The beach was quiet and the cabin had everything I needed. It is rustic, so if your expecting modern, you will be disappointed. But if you need a quiet getaway to let your soul rest, this is perfect.
This place was wonderful and just perfect for myself and my significant other. Although the backdoor to the porch doesn't actually close all the way, I would suggest taking a look at that and getting that fixed along with the window screens because they were either cut up with holes or nothing was there. But other than those two things it was a perfect getaway for us and quality time together to disconnect from our jobs and life at home.
Hi, Darian! Thank you for telling us about your stay at Crab Cottage. The screens have been replaced, and a new door has been installed. We hope to see you again!
Steps from the beach great backyard deck area
Views of the waves from inside
Right on the beach! Has just what you need to relax and enjoy the view.
This is right on the beach, no embankment to climb. We will return.
I’ve been coming to this cabin for over 20 years. It’s probably one of the best located cabins in that area of moclips. It’s literally right on the beach. It’s just beautiful. It is more of a beach shack, not a five star accommodation. My heart hurts a little to see that it’s not being better taken care of. In the 20 plus years I’ve been going there, not much has changed. And that’s not entirely a good thing. There is much needed care that needs to be done. There was a double pane window in the back that was broken (only one pane), and shards of glass were still in the window. This was quite a concern as we have a young daughter. Also, the back door could use some repair as well, it didn’t shut or lock without some maneuvering. The flooring throughout could really use some TLC. There is also a part of the loft that does not have a railing, just a net. I do hope the owners listen to reviews because with the rising price (and rental taxes... good grief!), it really should be in a better state. I absolutely adore this place, but am unsure if my family will be back again unfortunately. Please consider giving this perfect little cabin some TLC.
A lifelong crab cabin fan
Thank you for your review, Nicholas! We are sorry to read about the issues during your stay at Crab Cottage. The window has been replaced, new flooring is set to be installed in the home, and the back deck door has been replaced as well. We hope to see you again!
Loved how private and quiet this place was. Very peaceful and beautiful view of the ocean.
This place shows a total lack of care or maintenance, right down to a broken water view window. I feel sorry for the cleaners as it is futile with the state of the place. However, the location is fantastic and there is a nice deck and further out a nice fire pit. So your outdoors experience is quite nice...as long as you remember to bring your own furniture. Ha!
Hi, Susan! We are sorry to read you were not happier with your accommodations. We hope you will be pleased to hear the home is undergoing a full remodel; we'd love to share it with you once it's completed! Thank you!
Our family loves this rustic cozy cottage. It's a peaceful and tranquil spot.
Great place, right on beach, cozy and just what we needed.
Crab Cottage was a comfortable rustic haven with immediate back door access to the dunes, beach and ocean. The simple amenities met all of my needs. Neighbors were few, but friendly and the beach a clean, soul cleansing retreat.
Location location location.. it would have been nice to have deck chairs.
The view is amazing! Was a beautiful escape from hectic city life. Although some updates wouldn’t hurt the overall aesthetic of the cottage, they were quickly forgotten when staring directly at the majestic Pacific. Worth the stay!
[ ] Cons:
[ ] Carpenter ants inside crawling around in various places
[ ] Busted large front (ocean view) window you can't see thru because of algae and moisture
[ ] Bed that's hard as a rock (difficult to sleep on with back or joint issues), thin cheap pillows
[ ] Clumps of black dog hair from previous guests not cleaned up all over floors
[ ] Staircase scary to maneuver
[ ] Lots of exposed insulation, pipes, unfinished work on house. Feels like a shack.
[ ] Back door still sticks on tile when opening.
[ ] Pros
[ ] Right on the beach with beautiful views, private walkway to beach
[ ] Quaint/quirkey
[ ] Very SMALL but private
[ ] Nice outdoor firepit with seating
[ ] Cozy feeling, love-shackish
[ ] Not for "non-country type" folks who prefer updated amenities
[ ] Soap, dishsoap, paper towels, shampoo & conditioner, clean towels (& even a dog towel) provided
[ ] Games, books, dvds available
Hi, Roxanne! Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your stay. Our property manager would like to assure you we are continuously working on the Crab Cottage to provide a better experience for our guests. We hope to see you again!
Good for one or cozy two...not for handicapped..needs new mattress..other than that, awesome.
Because Moclips is the best. And its cozy. Thats why.
We loved our stay, beautiful ocean views, starry nights, walks on the beach, cozy cottage!
Seriously, it's a dream to be a few steps from the beach and gaze at the surf with every waking moment, but there's a caveat: This charming cabin is one of the last "clam shacks" in Moclips. It was built in a different era, around a 100 years ago, and each addition is funky, homemade and hodgepodge. It's kind of like camping out, but with a roof, windows, and a tiny kitchen. If you visit, bring your own pots and pans, unless you like eating from worn-away teflon and rubbery plastic. That said, we stayed four days and aside from our initial surprise, we loved it and were very pleased with our choice. Of course, we had rare sunshine every day, caught lots of surf perch and dug our limits of razor clams each day. Like I said, if you want location, this is as good as it gets.
Loved my extended weekend on the coast. The beach was beautiful and rainy, and the cottage provided ample comfort. Great for those who like to disconnect now and then.
Perfect size for me and my honey for a weekend getaway. Beach access was awesome!
Dirty, poorly stocked, shack in disrepair on beach view of the ocean.
Thank you for sharing your feedback, Leanne. We apologize if the cleanliness of the cottage left much to be desired, and we will follow-up with our housekeeping team to see that future cleans are completed to our standards, and restock the home of needed supplies. We hope to have another chance to impress you in the future!
My husband and I have stayed at Crab Cottage a number of time. My husband has a probably terminal illness, and can't walk easily. He needs a walker which doesn't work for a beach walk. Sitting both in the living room of this simple cottage, and also on the deck, allowed us to feel almost like we were almost directly on the beach. This is a wonderful place for someone who can pull themselves up a couple stairs to get into the house, but not much more, and who wants to get as close to the beach as possible.
The bathroom and kitchen area, and bedding was clean. That’s all I can say were what made this bearable. The ocean view was pretty. The structure itself should be totally redone or bulldozed. Five different flooring choices ripped and torn. Floor was rotting in several places. Very dirty living areas. Everything was old and rundown. The “TV” is from the 90’s and didn't really work. Outside benches were filthy and moldy. Gas grill was so disgusting as were the cooking utensils. WE LEFT AFTER THE FIRST NIGHT. Worse rental we’ve ever encountered.
Thank you for providing your feedback, Linda. We are disappointed to see that you did not enjoy your stay. Please know that we have performed a deep clean of this home to include the exterior areas, we’ve replaced the grill tools, and have restocked the kitchen with needed items. We will also make sure we’re paying close attention to the issues you raised here to the best of our abilities going forward, so that future guests can experience this wonderful home without any distractions. We hope to have another chance to impress you in the future!
We love this place! It was our 5th time coming and it is always wonderful.
The cabin is rustic but comfortable.
Perfect location for us and our dogs.
Cozy cabin. Quiet beautiful beach.
it was so quiet.......and the beach is right there! No long hike.
and loved the gas fireplace:)
Close to the Ocean
It was old and rugged just like us
First thing-The location and View are Amazing !!
The house had everything we needed
Perfect for a weeekend getaway.
Reminds me of my grandfather's quirky old cabin.
Best view and access of a beautiful beach.
Warm and cozy getaway with a great view of the ocean. The kitchen had everything I needed for making meals, and the layout of the living area was perfect for reading for hours and taking breaks to look out at the ocean. I wish I’d realized the full history of the guest book earlier in the stay so I could have spent more time reading it, as it has entries going back to 1967!
Extremely cozy and rustic. Incredible view. Perfect for a weekend getaway, truly away from everything.
the night the beach was open for clamming was incredible! the sunset was amazing and the clams even stuck their necks out so we could find them. got 2 limits in a short time and after the short walk back to the cottage we cleaned and packaged them.
the cottage had every thing we needed except an extension cord and possibly a small tool kit. we needed a pair of pliers to open a tightly closed valve on one of our pieces of equipment but luckily the neighbors were able to help us out.
as a disabled senior I did appreciate the fact that everything we needed was on the ground floor. accessing the loft was not a possibility for me but we managed nicely between the bed and the couch. we brought our own sheets and blankets for the bed because we have a small dog that MUST sleep with her 'daddy'. we also covered the couch in case she jumped up on it. we have found that most people that take their dogs on vacation are the kind that allow them on the furniture. it's too bad that a place calling itself "pet friendly" has such restrictive rules regarding them.
Otherwise it was a great place to mourn the loss of our oldest daughter and another of our dogs.
We are sorry to hear about your loss and hope you were able to find comfort while staying with us. We hope to see you again!
So very close to the beach. You can sit on the couch and see the surf! Crab Cottage is on the end of a dead end road so it was very quiet. Really appreciate being able to bring our dog. Crab Cottage is eclectic , rustic and basic, yet very comfortable. The deck has a bench around the perimeter but you should bring your own deck chairs.
This is our 2nd time staying at the Crab Cottage, and it did not disappoint. The location, with the mighty Pacific as your back yard, it unbeatable. Yes, its vintage...but take the time to read the guest book that has entries from the 50s when the original owners were building this little cottage. Reading their words, then staying in the cabin they built seems to make the Crab Cottage that much cozier. The kitchen is well stocked with anything you might need to cook with, the bathroom has more than enough clean towels ( and surprisingly great water pressure!), there are games and movies and a great gas fireplace for the winter/spring nights. We also love the geographical location as another reason to stay here. We are not a long drive from the beaches at La Push, Rialto Beach, and both the Hoh and Quinault Rainforests- all of which are great for hiking. The first time we went it was just my husband and I, the 2nd time we took our two teen boys who thought the loft was way cool. The cottage served both purposes (with and without kids) just fine. There is a brand new couch now which is super comfortable. We love The Crab Cottage, and we will definitely go there again!
The location for crab cottage can't be beat! Right on the beach & windows to watch the waves (& sunset). the cabin could use some updating, but that's reflected in the price. It seemed like the things the property management has control over (kitchen, bathroom, sheets, etc) was great, Even a new sponge in the kitchen. We did not use the upstairs - the downstairs seemed nicer & we didn't need the space. The sofa seemed new and the carpets were fine for walking on, there was an area rug over the living room area. We loved being right on the ocean and had a great sunset the first night. The second day was better weather and we walked and found fossils on the beach & flew kites. We were here in April on a "non-clam" tide day and the beach was nearly empty most of the time which was great! We were here with a 3 year old and had a great trip!
