About Granada Department

It can be hard to find a vacation destination that lets you experience both breathtaking natural beauty and rich, well-preserved history and culture. But it's not impossible - not if you visit Nicaragua's incredible Granada Department! The lakeside region has everything you could ever want on a tropical getaway, from stunning national parks to the oldest city in North America. Experience it all with a stay in one of our Granada vacation rentals.

Cities in Granada Department

Granada is dotted with small towns that each offer something unique for visitors. In the west, Nandaime features two charming amusement parks sure to delight any little ones in your group, while the riverside beauty of Malacataya to the north is perfect for retreating from the distractions of the modern world. But if you can only visit one of Granada's cities, the choice is obvious: the ancient town of the same name.

Founded five centuries ago, Granada retains the colorful architecture and monuments of its rich history, while still offering a wide selection of shops and restaurants to explore. Nearby Ometepe Island provides high-quality farm-to-table food to enjoy, while the waters of Lake Nicaragua to the east make for jaw-dropping sunrises. There's something in the town for everyone - especially those who need some rest and relaxation after exploring the other sights Granada has to offer!

Natural Beauty in Granada

If all the Granada province had to offer was the shining waters of Lake Nicaragua, it would still be a hotbed for nature enthusiasts looking for one-of-a-kind sights. Fishing, boating, or exploring the dense forests of the Parque Nacional Archipiélago de Zapatera on Zapatera Island provides endless opportunities for sightseeing.

But Granada has even more to offer than the lake - the Mombacho Volcano National Preserve features rushing waterfalls, verdant forests, and the towering presence of the eponymous volcano perfectly preserved for any would-be explorers. If you're looking for something different, two more preserves are directly south. Freshwater fun awaits at Lagunetas de Mecatepe Natural Reserve, while the Silvestre Privada Domitila Reserve boasts more shaded forest trails to explore.
