Spain's gorgeous Canary Islands are host to many incredible cities, from the bustling Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the eponymous island to Arrecife on Lanzarote. There is much more to see than just the island capitals, however!
La Laguna is an excellent example - located nearby Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the city shouldn't be overlooked. Its rich history, gorgeous natural beauty, and amazing location all make it one stop on your next vacation you don't want to miss! Better yet, stay in one of our vacation rentals and experience it like a local.
La Laguna - or San Cristóbal de La Laguna, if you're not one for abbreviation - has the unique distinction of being a fully modern city of over 150,000 residents that still celebrates an incredible, ancient history. La Laguna is well over five centuries old, enough that the city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site! Guided tours can take you through the city's unique grid layout, which has been persevered for hundreds of years while so many others have been shaped and re-shaped.
Dozens of examples of Canarian and European architecture line the streets - perhaps you'll stop by the Baroque and Neo-Classical inspired Palacio de Nava, or visit the refurbished, 16th-century Casa Granero. More history awaits in the Church of the Conception, the first house of Christian worship in the city. The cathedral, meanwhile, has an impressive selection of gorgeous wood carvings to admire.
At the same time, there's a lot to be said for more slow, measured exploration. Don't be afraid to pick up a book on the area's extensive folklore and just sit for a spell in the Plaza de la Concepción, or perhaps try a recipe inspired by the local cuisine in the kitchen in your vacation rental.
La Laguna, unlike most Canarian cities of note, is not a coastal city. In exchange for lacking a beach of its own, however, the city has easy access to a variety of natural and coastal destinations. Bajamar Beach, for example, is just eight miles to the north, with several hundred feet of sand and shingles for relaxing as you watch the swelling tide.
The beach also provides easy access to one of two nearby natural swimming pools. Between the Bajamar Pools near the beach and the stunning mountain views by Punta del Hidalgo, you're sure to have a great time watching the crashing waves from the peaceful stillness of the shining blue waters.
After spending time traveling, it's nice to stretch your legs with a long walk. Luckily, Anaga Natural Park is less than five miles away. The lush rolling hills of the biosphere reserve offer wonderful scenery to walk through and provide a different sight from the beaches you may be used to.
When you're ready to brave the crowds for some excitement, pay a visit to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital city. On top of its own lovely beach, the city has a wide selection of shops, restaurants, and local culture to explore. For smaller-scale fun, why not visit the village of Tacoronte? It's just 10 miles to the south and makes for a great resting point before proceeding to bigger cities like Puerto de la Cruz or La Orotava.
When you visit the beautiful island of Tenerife, don't pass by this little town and all it has to offer. If you have the time, stay in one of our vacation rentals to see what it's really all about.
