The coastal Puntarenas province of Costa Rica is southwest and Guanacaste is directly west, where you'll find even more beautiful beaches and coastline.
Several volcanoes throughout the Alajuela region provide amazing outdoor recreation and natural scenery. Arenal Volcano, Poás Volcano, and Tenorio Volcano are the top three in the province. Visit the Poás Volcano National Park and discover the Laguna Caliente - an acidic geyser-filled crater at the summit - and try to snag a photo before the clouds roll in.
Arenal Volcano is one of the most active in the world, providing once-in-a-lifetime sights of lava flowing toward the base when you visit the surrounding area. The nearby town of La Fortuna features a score of geothermal springs perfect for a relaxing natural soak.

You'll find plenty of urban activities and cultural heritage throughout Alajuela Province. The city of Alajuela is Costa Rica's second largest city about 12 miles north of San José in the Central Valley.
From the military history at the former barracks to the Juan Santamaría Historical Museum, there's plenty to explore in Alajuela. The city's Central Park features lovely towering mango trees and royal palm trees. Take a stroll through the park, watch a local concert, then head over to the must-see Alajuela Cathedral. About 15 miles west of Alajuela and San José, the small town of Atenas offers an inviting, laid-back feel surrounded by scenic coffee plantations.
