Dog-friendly cabin w/park & beach access; private hot tub, fireplace & firepit
The Dune Flower, one of four cabins in the Mendocino Coast Dunes Retreat complex, is a great place for a small group to stay, though it can also be rented together with the other three houses for a fun-filled group vacation! This cabin has a charming nautical theme, a private hot tub, a clean and comfortable design, and a dog-friendly attitude, so everyone will love it here!
Located about seven miles north of Fort Bragg, this home is just over half a mile from the sparkling ocean; though if you want easy beach access, you may want to drive to MacKerricher State Park, because the walk from the cabin over the dunes is a bit hilly.
Up to four people are may stay in this one-bedroom, one-bathroom home which features a full-size bed in the bedroom and a comfortable fold-out futon. Feel free to bring your dogs to enjoy the vacation with you, though a nightly fee per dog and minimum fee per stay will apply.
With a delightful nautical theme, you will feel very welcome in the living area, which comes complete with cable TV, a DVD player, free WiFi access, and a cozy gas fireplace. There is no full kitchen, but the kitchenette offers a small mini-fridge (without a freezer), a microwave, a toaster oven (but no regular oven), and a small two-burner hot plate so you can whip up a snack easily.
In the grassy backyard area, privacy fencing will keep you separate from the other cabins. A nice deck area with seating and a firepit nearby is a great place to sit in the evening, telling stories, relaxing in the cool sea air, and roasting a few marshmallows on the fire.
This cabin would be a lovely place for a small family or a few friends to spend a nice vacation, though it would also be wonderful to rent all four cabins at the same time and invite all your loved ones! With the beach nearby, the beauty of nature surrounding you, and towns within a short drive away, you may never want to leave.
With a fun theme, this ship-shape cabin is a comfortable place to stay during your vacation!
The house was cozy and comfortable. The hot tub was amazing. The only thing the cottage needs is a good wine opener and a couple of nice wine glasses!
This cabin was perfect! Cozy, comfy and everything we needed was right there. WiFi worked great. Mobile phone service was minimal (a plus in my view). We got to bring our furry family and enjoy Christmas near our favorite dog friendly beach. Sitting by the fireplace basking in the warmth, reading and listening to the rain fall on the roof was just what I needed this year. Can’t wait to go back!
This place is extremely quiet. Great location with access to 10-mile dunes (dogs prohibited) and easy drive to many coastal areas and beaches.
Lots of birdsong in the trees.
Ocean pounding in the distance.
Dark at night. Dog loved the outside space to play.
Easy to heat and very comfy.
We loved this place, super cute, everything needed to cook meals was there and 5 minute walk to the tallest dune and another 15 to the beach.
This place was beyond adorable! It was perfect for my boyfriend, myself, and our dog. The hot plates/cooking supplies were more than enough, it should be noted that it also has a small toaster oven. Plenty of towels, dish cloths, paper towels, hand soap, as well as dish soap we're supplied. The refrigerator was small but did the trick as we also brought your large cooler filled with ice to hold the rest of our food/drinks. It was bright and airy with plenty of windows to open and let fresh air in. The fireplace was fantastic, as was the hot tub. I only wish the hot tub was cleaned better and the toilet was not so small. The toilet was comically small, especially for my 6'2" tall boyfriend. I myself and five feet tall and using the tiny shower was a bit of a struggle. It would have been nice to be able to use the loft space and extra room, and kind of creeped me out that there was only a thin accordion style plastic partition separating us from this space, then again, I may have seen too many horror films as my imagination ran wild with what might be behind said partition. There was plenty of outdoor space and privacy. Overall, this ended up being a fantastic vacation and we were grateful to have such an adorable space to stay in!
Charming house, with just the right amenities. Wonderful location!
House was cute and near the dunes which were great to explore. By the time I added up all the additional costs though, I was spending $200 a night for no stove. Have to do my research better next time. All the fees just added up!!!
We are sorry to see this home ended up being more than this guest was interested in. We have agents available on the phones to assist our guests in finding the right house at the right cost for them. Thanks!
hot tub, outside fire pit, decor
Wonderful, tiny spot to land.
A couple improvements would be the shower, nozzle broken so it was a tad challenging and no way to really cook or prepare meals for longer stays, - BUT we booked because we didn’t require that. Would recommend for a couple looking for quite.
We had so much fun and the little house was very cozy. Hot tub did take some time to heat up but we were thankful it was there to enjoy!!
Loved this place. It was charming and comfortable. Lots of skylights, nice little gas fireplace, great hot tub!
Got sick, first night. Had to leave very early after only one night (not fault of the property)
Both my wife and I a very enjoyable time. Dune Flower is a quaint, affordable getaway. I'm sure we'll revisit this hideaway again.
Close proximity to walk the the beach is great. Very quiet & peaceful. Would be great for those with small pet. We were 4, 2 adults & 2 kids. The small kitchen made it nice to have some breakfast food items not to have to run out early & the crockpot made it easy for us to have dinner in one night to relax. Beds are on the tiny side, but overall sleep was good.
Location and amenities were wonderful for our weekend stay I've read mixed reviews about the dunes and their accessibility I found that the accessibility was very easy and wonderful although we didn't make the full trip to the ocean from the Dune Trail I was confused on previous renters confusion on the distance and location of the dunes they seem to be quite accessible and the ocean was quite visible we would stay here again it was a beautiful comfortable home thank you for sharing with us
Great little cottage, close to the dunes and beach. Only a short drive into town. I will definitely stay here again
Very nice, quiet location. Everything necessary was provided.
This place needs a lot of TLC, especially in functioning appliances... there is no real kitchen, only the hot plate works, the bed is full sized, not a queen. The furniture is old (i.e., futon couch cover is torn in multiple places, stained and gritty chairs). The location is great, and the place is really cute, but really neglected.
We're sorry the guest appeared to be surprised as to what amenities are available. The bed is advertised as a double, and the pictures show a coffeemaker and a hotplate.
This is a cute little house for a small family of 3-4. It's on a quiet street with lots of room for kids and animals to run around outside. It says there is beach access from the property but, if you can access the beach from there, we're not sure how. We walked 20 minutes toward the beach and almost got lost in rolling sand dunes, 20 feet high, and still no closer to the beach. Don't let the sound of the waves in the distance fool you into thinking you can walk down there with your kids, drive a short way north to McKerricher State Beach instead. Beautiful spot. As for the house itself, it has most everything you need (although no regular oven or range) and is comfortable if a little rough around the edges. Wouldn't recommend it for more than one family because the usable space is essentially one room with a tight alcove with a curtain for a bedroom; not much room or privacy. A pleasant stay overall and an affordable option for the area.
It takes about 20-30 minutes through the dunes to reach the ocean (it's just over half a mile from the house). Thank you!
bring much bug spray for the mosqitoes, don't buy anything that needs to be frozen and mark your way from the trail to the beach so you can actually find it.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Dune Flower. It's small, but totally fine for the two of us. The utensils and kitchen equipment is limited (mini-fridge, hot plate with two burners), but we had read about this and planned our meals accordingly. The location was quiet and convenient. A bit far out of Mendocino (25-30min), but close enough to Fort Bragg and any of the spots we wanted to be. We particularly enjoyed walking over the dunes to the beach in the morning and soaking in the hot tub under the stars at night. Thanks for the great getaway!
This house is fantastic. Perfect for a weekend. It's small but has all the amenities you would need for a couple of days away. We had our 2 kids and our dog and we were very happy. The beach is right down the path. It's about a 10 min walk out to the water through the dunes. Some reviews say the dunes are a rough hike which they are not - our 4 yo had no issue getting out there. Should be noted dogs are not allowed on the beach which was a bummer when we saw the signs. It's about a 10 min drive back into Fort Bragg from where the house is. The hot tub, fire pit and bbq were perfect for a nice evening in. There's no stove but the hot plates work well for pasta/rice etc. The only issue we had was the master bed is a full. If you are tall (I'm 5'9" and husband is 6'3") it gets uncomfortable so my recommendation is removing the foot board. Other than that amazing spot :)
What a lovely peaceful stay! Thank you
This home was really cute and in a quiet, gorgeous location. If you are staying an extended amount of time, or you are bringing children, just be prepared for a small fridge, no freezer, and limited cooking ability (no stove, and two-burner hotplate.
Great secluded yard and spa for star gazing and relaxing. Comfortable bed, large bath and adequate kitchen. The adventure trek to the beach is worth the effort for the grand Northern California coastal experience.
We came here for our one year wedding anniversary. Great spot. The place is out off a dirt road FYI! I fell in love with the area, weather, and guest book with entries back to 1991! The hike over the dunes is no joke - if you're out of shape, beware! The hot tub is off when you get there so turn it on first as it takes a long time to warm up. Also there is no freezer so fridge items only or bring a cooler. The decor is great and the place is so quiet and peaceful. Also there's no fenced in area for your dog so be careful :) we will be back!
If you're looking for a quiet place to stay on a budget, this is the place for you.
Charming, cozy, small. Beautiful surroundings. I recommend planning a barbecue dinner if you want to cook in as the provided electrical appliances have limitations for cooking a family meal.
This cottage is adorable. Unfortunately though, many things in the cottage are broken: shower door; shower handle; one of the only two hotplate burners does not work; electric saucepan is broken. Kitchen door locks do not work properly. If they fix these things, the cottage will be perfect.
We apologize for the several inconveniences this guest experienced during this reservation. Unfortunately, the shower door cannot be addressed at this time as it would require replacing the entire shower. The cooking implements will be replaced as soon as we have the owner's approval to do so.
We had a great weekend here, and the dog liked it too. Fort Bragg is lovely and this place is in a great location - not far from town but still quiet and private, with lovely trees, lots of birds singing, and the dunes just a short walk away (beach involves a longer walk). The hot tub is genuinely hot (not always the case with rented properties)... but I think the controls are locked up so if we wanted it cooler we had to run the noisy jets. Close to other rental and residential properties but private because of the way the buildings and yards are oriented. Some minor issues with the amenities (no teakettle; half-functional hot plate; no ice), but the place had that perfect "beach retreat" feel. Perfect for a nap on a misty afternoon. Guest book was one of the highlights for me -- something like 20 years' worth of visitors' comments, including some who returned several times. That took away some from the weirdly generic hotel feel that the plastic Vacasa signs lent to the place.
Most definitely would stay there again.
The cottage was very comfortable and extremely clean. We appreciated the shampoo and conditioner left by the owner as well as the hairdryer. We enjoyed the gas fireplace as well as the space heater! The horseshoe pit was nice and it was fun to explore the path to the water.
We stayed in the property for two nights with our two kids and dog. it was lovely, the cabin is small, but was perfectly fine for our needs. there is a well stocked kitchen, the kids shared the futon and we slept in the double bed. we had family dinners on the deck and sat by the firepit in the evening. i definitely recommend staying here, and i hope we will find the time to visit again.
I was very pleased with the house and the location. It was very clean and adorable. However, they don't mention that HALF the house (with the sliding glass door) is blocked off for "owners storage". I feel it's unfair you pay for the house and you only get half !
We are sorry to see that the owner's space was such a disappointment; the home is advertised as having one bedroom and one bathroom, and guests do get that as well as everything pictured on the website.
Love Fort Bragg! We had a great time! The house has beach access within a bit on a hike, but dogs are not allowed. There is no stove, only a microwave and a hot plate. I still loved this place!
This was a lovely little cabin for our family of four. We had the best time exploring the dunes on the adventurous hike out to the beach from the cabin. The yard space was lovely and perfect for the kids and the cabin was delightfully charming. We just wish there was a proper door on the bathroom for added privacy in a small place. The movie selection was so much fun to choose from and the fire pit outside provided lovely evenings under the stars. Thanks for a cozy stay!
A very adorable place in a great location, however the roof leaks (don't keep things on the kitchen table or the rain will ruin them)and the deck is rotten by the kitchen door so be careful!! I almost broke through a rotten board in the dark. Overall though a cute place in a great private area and We'd definitely stay here again in this cute beach cottage.
nice location very safe area
We had a nice and cozy stay. Going to the beach in brisk cold weather was fun. Bring plenty to eat. It takes a while to get to the nearest grocery store.
It states that this place is suited for 4, however the main bed is barely big enough for one person. I'm only 5'2" and weight 115 lbs and my husband is 5'10" and 210lbs....the futon is old and lumpy, our children ended up sleeping on the floor. Clearly this place is not suited for a family of four. I really expected more with the price being over $400 and with what you wrote about it....I should have just stayed in town at a hotel, would have been cleaner, with more room, and not irritated our families asthma. Not to mention the other properties surrounding us were so loud with the parties they were having. This was not an enjoyable visit and I will not be returning.
We appreciate your review and are very disappointed to see that you were so uncomfortable with the accommodations. The Property Manager will check into the musty smell and advise the owner of your comments regarding the beds. We hope you had fun enjoying the outdoor firepit!
I will start by saying there is a locked curtain door that leads to another room that accesses a loft above the living room. It says it is the owners storage. I was really put off by this. I kept wondering if someone was in there. Haha I tend to have a wild imagination. I wondered why no one had mentioned this in the reviews. I guess it would have been a game changer for me as I would not have rented this place. Although after the first night I was feeling more comfortable with the situation. Also the curtain door for the bathroom offered no privacy. With that being said I ended up really enjoying the place. It was a little quirky but peaceful. We ended up staying an extra night and the property manager was very nice and accommodating. Vacassa was very thorough with everything. It was a very easy process.
We just needed to chill, and this cottage was perfect. We did a lot of cooking and watching shows together and walked the dog on the beach and found a great coffee shop downtown and had a great meal at Silver's at The Wharf. But mostly we stayed in and about the cottage, which is comfortable and well-equipped.
The location was great, short walk to the dunes. House is very dated and used. The bathrooms and kitchen area....which are the two most important were not very clean. Make sure you wash any kitchen items before using. The deck was a sweet location but the deck furniture was nasty. Fortunately were were there for the activities and didn't spend much time at the house. Don't set food out....ants in the kitchen.
We apologize for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay; we will work with housekeeping on making sure the home is thoroughly cleaned and free of ants. We will also look into what we can do for the deck furniture. We hope you got to enjoy the fire pit! Thank you!
I stayed with my mother, boyfriend, and two dogs in May and we all had a great time! If you plan to spend a lot of time in the house, it is a little crowded with more than two people, but we were out most of the time so it was no problem for us. There isn't an oven and the fridge is a mini-fridge but there is a two burner hot plate and the grill outside is great, if you plan on doing any cooking. The location is about 10 minutes north of Fort Bragg, which was great for us. Very quiet and peaceful. Very clean, plenty of towels and bedding. Would definitely stay here again!
A lovely cabin in a quiet location, on the edge if beautiful dunes. It feels remote, though very close to Fort Bragg and Mendocino. I would definitely return there .
It was quiet enriching stay. I was impressed with a blend of coziness and efficiency.
They anticipated all of potential needs
We loved it from the moment we pulled up. So clean, beautiful and inviting. We loved the fact that we could cook in the kitchen and still eat outside by the camp fire. Our kids had a blast being able to explore the trail leading to the beach. I would recommend this to other families. It is small and very cozy, but very comfortable. The bed is quite small for for someone that is over 6 ft tall like my husband but we made it work! It was definitely worth getting away to this cute cozy cottage nestled in the woods. It would be great for couples or families with kids!
We very much needed a relaxing getaway and this house gave it to us. Great location, not that far from Fort Bragg. Very quiet and had a great area for me to play catch with my son.
It may not be on the beach, but it is close enough for a good ocean feeling. We absolutely loved the interior decorations. It was a very fun place for us to spend a few days.
The furnishings were lovely, and the whitewashed walls are very pretty. The location is wonderfully quiet, we could enjoy every bird call and since our home is in a very dog oriented (read: barking night and day) neighborhood, the silence was so restful.
Loved walking the dunes and beach, could have really gotten in shape had we stayed a week instead of two nights.
Thanks for your wonderful review! These cottages are so cute and the location is fantastic with access to the beach just down the road. And the yard is great to play some horseshoes or just sitting around the firepit sharing stories. It is nice to hear that you found it nice and peaceful and were able to have a nice relaxing stay. We hope to have you as guests again soon!
This property was absolutely amazing. I have one and only one complaint. There was no handbook explaining anything about the property. Ie, no WiFi password no location of the stove and rules or requests for when we leave. but overall it was a very wonderful place. I highly recommend it.
Thank you for your review. We're glad that you had such a great stay. Vacasa is in the process of updating and standardizing all of our welcome binders. The updated binder should be in the home shortly.
