Historic dog-friendly waterfront cabin w/hot tub & Salmon River access
Immerse yourself in history and comfort at this gorgeous 1940s-era, riverfront Welches vacation rental which boasts a private hot tub and dog-friendly amenities for family or friends. Near ski resorts and hiking trails, and right on the edge of the Mt. Hood National Forest, you'll spend your time here relaxing on the deck, gathering around the massive floor-to-ceiling, rock-faced fireplace, and breathing in the fresh mountain air.
The secluded home is located on the banks of the Salmon River. Please note: the river can be very fast-moving, so please be careful when playing nearby. The cabin is less than two miles from the city, which boasts three golf courses and four nearby ski resorts!
The inside of this stylish Welches bungalow will remind you of a mountain lodge - with its tall ceilings, wood paneling and beams, gorgeous hardwood floors, and comfortable furniture. While the snow falls down outside, put another log on the fire, and settle back on the sofa right under the antler chandelier for an evening of chatting, reading, or watching cable TV. There's WiFi, a DVD player, and a VCR, as well as a collection of VHS tapes to choose from.
Deck access is right through either set of the living room's French doors. Out here, you'll find a hot tub, a gas grill, and a beautiful view of the Salmon River. The water is so close, you can even dip your toes in right from the edge of the property.
This main level is spacious and open, with a china hutch, dining table, and small work area right by a black iron spiral staircase. The country-style full kitchen has an eat-in breakfast counter, stovetop/range, refrigerator, dishwasher, and microwave. Smaller gadgets include a coffee grinder and toaster, so quick breakfasts before a hike are easy to prepare.
Right near the work station is a plaid-themed full bathroom with a pedestal sink and a walk-in shower. And on this level, you'll also find the first bedroom with a queen bed, brass bed frame, and a rustic, mountain cabin decor. This room also has a stacked washer and dryer, so there's no need to overpack when you stay here.
Up the spiral staircase, are the two additional bedrooms - one with a full and a twin bed, as well as another room with two twin beds. And in the upstairs bathroom, you'll have a beautiful clawfoot tub for soaking - there's even a large skylight in the slanted ceiling for a tree-lined view. All bedrooms have their own TVs. In addition, a sofabed provides and extra sleeping space, so that up to six guests can stay here at the Papa Bear Cabin. Up to two dogs (100 pounds or less) are also welcome with an additional fee.
This Welches vacation cabin is close to hiking and biking trails, river access, golfing at The Resort at the Mountains, and numerous restaurants for those evenings that you don't feel like cooking. Right along the Mt. Hood Scenic Byway there's the highly-rated Rendezvous Grill for specials like Wine Down Wednesdays, El Burro Locco for wild boar tacos, and the ZigZag Inn - be sure to try a pizza there!
In winter, you're only 13 miles from Mt. Hood Skibowl, 19 miles from Timberline Lodge, and 22 miles from Mt. Hood Meadows, so you'll want to be sure to bring your skis and snowboards! And even closer to your mountain getaway, you can enjoy cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and even snowmobiling in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
This Papa Bear Cabin in Welches is the quintessential Mt. Hood vacation rental! Year-round, you'll enjoy classic mountain lodge ambiance, your own private hot tub with forest views, and a great location near all the area's best attractions.

The decor was a nostalgic blast from the past. Woodsy location.
The house sat right on the river and was very cozy and clean. It takes a bit to heat up, given the size and height of the ceilings, so I recommend getting the heat going ASAP. Lovely home and would recommend it to anyone looking for a Mt. Hood getaway.
We got moved to this cabin because the first house we rented the hot tub stopped working unfortunately. The rental manager was so awesome and offered to move us to this house or refund us the hot tub fee. After looking at the pictures of this house we agreed to move and boy am I glad we did! Nicest hot tub I think I have ever been in. Perfect with the stream right there. We've stayed in quite a few different houses on Hood and this is now one of my favorites! Would definitely stay here again!
thank you for allowing us to stay @ your home. The place was peaceful and warm.
The cabin itself was like going back in time. The gorgeous stone fireplace set a wonderful mood for our anniversary weekend. The hot tub was in a great location, out of view of most neighbors and overlooking the river. The collection of classic music and movies was great.
Due to the snow, we didn’t leave the cabin. We did try to take a walk but we did find the close proximity of neighbors and the advertised friendly neighborhood dogs a bit off putting.
Overall, this was a place our family really enjoyed. If you like managing a fire place and spending time playing board games and watching movies, this the place.
It was a hot weekend. There was a fan or two available but we also brought a few of our own. Was not a problem. We selected this location because it was on a river. We loved that! The road to get to the house is not reflective of the actual house. The house is well appointed.
Spent most our time on the beautiful back deck next to the river. Very relaxing and peaceful. Comfy, clean house too. Would be a great place for a family.
This is a great property for a quiet get away! The river provides complete peace!
Wonderful woodsy setting on the Salmon River. Nice floor plan with bedrooms on two floors. Great indoor and outdoor soaking options. A number of dogs in immediate vicinity who wander, but largely friendly and quiet.
The Papa Bear Cabin is a great getaway for close family time and close to Mt. Hood activities. We would stay with you again.
This place is RIGHT on a creek, and our favorite part of our stay was sitting in the hot tub while listening to the water running. There's a beautiful tub upstairs, a great stereo, lots of movies, and a beautiful fireplace. Definitely loved this home.
We were rented this house last minute when our original rental had a heating problem, so it was a comparable replacement. This house was bigger and had a great deck right on the river, which was nice. This house was located far back on a dead end road but there were quite a few other houses close by. The neighbor dogs, which didn't look that friendly, did chase our car on one occasion and I didn't feel comfortable walking around with our dog. We stepped in dog poop several times on the property, which was annoying. (from the neighbor dogs maybe)
Had a great time this weekend at Papa Bear Cabin - it was good for the soul. Lovely secluded setting. Awesome (huge) hot tub overlooking the river. Old school fireplace created great ambiance. Also a great collection of old VHS tapes, it's been a while since we've watched Cool Runnings...
we really enjoyed our stay. the neighbors were very friendly and like to visit with you. There were a few dogs around but they were nice also. The hot tub was great :)
Very nice we would come back.
We love this cabin and will be back!
This was our second time staying here. It's a beautiful and quiet home, ideal for relaxing, playing games and cookouts. We had a lovely time.
If you don't like dogs, don't rent this place! There are several large dogs that freely run throughout the cul-de-sac. They are all super friendly and love to come visit. We love dogs and had our two with us. It is a beautiful spot and we didn't want to leave!
The local welcoming committee (neighborhood pups) were very sweet. They made our pups (boxers) feel right at home. :)
The house is nice, and it’s quiet. The furnishings are dated but functional. The last ½ mile of road to the house is in bad shape. The neighborhood is unsightly… they were friendly, but I definitely felt like we needed to lock our vehicles. Although the house is dog friendly, I’d think twice about taking pets. There were no less than 5 or 6 dogs who were always around, their owners would rarely intervene. It got to the point it was annoying to drive up and have neighbor dogs jumping in the car as we’re trying to unload. Most were friendly, but I definitely wouldn’t let the younger kids walk around outside by themselves.
Nice cabin, close to lots of hiking and recreation as well as the town of Welches (and the Grocery Store). Not particularly secluded, but with the river right there it's quiet and the neighbors (and their dogs) are friendly. A little tricky to find, make sure you follow the directions rather than internet maps are a bit off in the area.
We had a great time at this getaway in Welches! Incredible location, and great amenities.
We enjoyed our stay here - sweet memories made.
Pros: Location: right on the river! Loved listening to the river and the kids had fun exploring as it wasn't deep. Hot tub: a definite plus and really fun to enjoy that with the family. Fireplace: a must! Very cozy. Space: plenty of space, seating, dining space, very nice. The deck was also great and would be fun in summer. Close to Mt Hood outdoor attractions. Close to Thriftway for things you forgot.
Cons: Location! Sadly the neighbors and the muddy street make the immediate area look like a trashy trailer park. Nothing the cabin can do about the neighbors, but it's very unfortunate. And as others said: beware the huge dogs that come running up, and a little one that keeps trying to get in to the house. The little one jumped inside our car and peed when we were unpacking! Another con: the downstairs shower comes with its own wrench to turn on/off. Owner should go put a knob on that shower ASAP - cheap and quick fix! Bedroom tvs are very old and we saw they were connected to a cable but we never figured out how to play anything but a VCR. Upstairs heat is also iffy. I have no idea how others did it in winter/early spring - I got up twice to flip the breakers and the heat upstairs would turn on for a bit and then quit. As another said, we were cold the first night and the second night was fine. But that issue should be fixed for sure.
While we loved being on the river, and the inside of the cabin was great (very clean!!), we probably wouldn't return because of the issues mentioned. With cleaning and fees (hot tub, booking, etc.), it turned out to be above our budget and next time we'll look for something in a cleaned-up neighborhood where the cost will feel justified.
Thanks for a good stay!
The location was pretty amazing.
Well maintained and roomy. Had some issues keeping the hot tub running and we were not left with flashing tablets to keep the water clean between uses.
The great room with its hearth and fireplace along with the amazing deck and hot tub, literally right next to the river, are worth it alone.
That said, the rest of the house is a bit dated. But if you're looking for a couple's get-away sans expectations around amenities, this is the place. We had a great time. Super nice property manager and neighbors, as well.
Beautiful cabin, beautiful location! Upon entering, we noticed that the interior of the cabin was spotless. Well done, whoever maintains and cleans after guests leave! The Big Dogs came by for a friendly visit along with their owners. Charming couple, was nice to hear about what it's like to have lived in this rustic area for over 30 years. My wife and I hope to visit again, and book for several more days. There is so much to explore in the area; creeks, rivers, hiking, just relaxing, and a Dairy Queen in Zig Zag w000t! I do have one suggestion: given all the beautiful wood interior, the huge deck and all the trees, the owners should have a fire extinguisher inside, just in case. I'm sure everyone is very careful, but a stove fire, bar-b-que, or something totally unexpected could occur, especially when it has been such a hot, dry summer. Thank you for a great, albeit too short, vacation at this cabin. Hated to leave, we'll be back!
The cabin was very nice and clean. Very well decorated. The river was low due to the drought conditions but still nice. There are some neighbor dogs that have the freedom to roam and often use this property as a short cut to cross the river. They are friendly and will go if you tell them to. But if you don't like dogs or for any reason just don't want dogs showing up without warning, this isn't the cabin for you.
Perfect location at the end of a dead end street and right next to the river. River was quite low but great to play in. Grocery store just a couple of miles up the road. We were there during a very HOT week. Temps were 100 a few days. No AC and some windows didn't open or have screens to help cool off. If you will be there in warm weather, consider taking a few fans. Especially for upstairs. Neighbors were very friendly and helpful. They had a couple of well behaved Great Danes that would sometimes visit but never a problem (except that it would set my little dogs into a barking fit) Beautiful cabin, deck, hot tub and location. Would definitely recommend and would definitely return.
The place was nice with a hot tub on the deck, that was very enjoyable. Also a Grill for cooking on the deck. If you want piece and quiet and to be away from the phones this is the place for you! It's located a ways off the beaten path and surrounded by beautiful trees and next to a creek.
Lovely cabin with a spectacular deck right on the Salmon River, with a better than expected hot-tub. The kitchen was fully stocked with pans and utensils and the fridge was new. Comfortable beds and clean towels. I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to staying at the property again.
Amazing location right on the creek!!! Lovely spot.
Family of four, 2 adults and 2 children (ages 14 and 6) spent an amazing 5 days at this cabin. The rental was clean and stocked with the necessary items (i.e. pots, pans, linens, etc). The wood fireplace in the living room kept us nice and cozy at night.
The surrounding land is absolutely beautiful. Very lush and green. The sound of the running small river in the backyard was soothing too. Our kids loved playing outdoors and made friends with a couple of the neighbor's dogs. We miss "Ruby" the Great Dane especially our 6 y.o. daughter.
Our family would definitely vacation at this property again. We'd love to visit in the late summer or early fall.
Papa bear cabin was like going home but better. Very cozy, clean and neat. Loved the huge fireplace, and the sound of the river was very relaxing.
We will be back!
Our family gives each other the 'gift of time together' for Christmas. This year we spent it on a glorious weekend at the Papa Bear Cabin. We loved every aspect of our stay and recommend highly.
My husband and I came up for the weekend with our 2 dogs. The location is very central and we were close to hiking, restaurants and the grocery store which is great for a short stay. We ate out at Rendezvous, Altitude, Zigzag Mountain cafe (breakfast) and enjoyed all 3 locations. There are friendly neighbors with equally friendly dogs right next store so we definitely felt welcome and part of the community. This property would also be great for a family or larger group.
I brought my family together to attend a wedding and Papa Bear's was the perfect retreat for us. My family consists of electricians and contractors, all of whom were impressed by the quality construction and how well kept the cabin is. Of course they checked: everything was to code!
The Wildwood Recreation area wetlands trails are awesome and so were the brownies from the Hazelnut Bakery in Welches. They were all so impressed with the friendly community and we enjoyed the neighborhood dogs in the 'Leash Free Animal Park". Most of all we loved the deck and the river. We plan on making Papa Bear's cabin a family tradition. Thank you Papa Bear! Thank you Vacasa! A wonderful time was had by all.
Papa Bear Cabin is so amazing. My husband and I took his visiting parents here for a two night getaway from Portland. It was a perfect place to relax and enjoy being in the woods.
The cabin is decorated with such personality and care. We could tell that it is a special place to its owners and that it has a great history. It was very clean and comfortable. Everything was in great working shape. The grill was great. The hot tub was wonderful!
The one and only not so great thing about our stay: the driving directions were wrong on our gps and on the directions Vacasa emailed us. (Don't go right on Island Dr! Keep going straight instead.)
We would absolutely recommend staying here and hope to come back soon!
Thank you so much for your review of this home, and thank you for choosing Vacasa! We are so glad to see you were able to enjoy some of the amenities the cabin offers, and we love to see the way people bond at this home. We are looking into those driving directions for future guests. Thank you!
What a pristine site, right along the river with friendly neighbors nearby. No traffic and a very safe neighborhood for kids. We loved everything about it. The homeowners obviously take pride in this home and it shows in the details. If you have a chance to book this house I would do it without any hesitation. Loved it!
This is great feedback! We're so glad that your experience with us was such a positive one and that you enjoyed this great house. We look forward to seeing you again!
Truely a great experience. Situated on Salmon River this unit is situated in a beatful area. The cabin is very well laid out with a hot tub on the deck overlooking the river. Nice fireplace with wood helped on the rainy days. Could use a bit better directions on getting there. Old Tv needs to be replaced with a flatsceen. Surround sound did not work. The location and hottub make up for the minor faults.
Thank you for sharing your review. As we continue to update and improve this home we will certainly consider your suggestions regarding the driving directions and the television. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience in finding the home, and thank you again for your constructive feedback!
