We couldn’t find a single beach house on the island that met what we were looking for better than Shell Cottage. We were mostly wanting a great view, quiet, and solitude. Shell Cottage had it all and more. It’s situated such that off to the east you have the best view of the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and at a slight angle the ocean. There is a house between Shell Cottage and the waters edge to the south but it was easy to ignore and gave a buffer between us and the very few people on the beach. Most of the time we spent on the beach in early June we saw no one for yards in either direction. Inside it was plenty big for us but we were only a party of five. There were plenty of dishes, cookware, and bath towels. It was clean with nice decor. The only slight drawback was that the elevator is the only way in if you’ve locked the house as the house key only fit the door under the house.
The house was wonderful, beautiful views from every turn. The elevator is priceless! It allows people of age or with mobility problems an option other than a condo. Hope to go and stay there again.
Spacious house with nice décor. Comfortable indoor and outdoor furnishings. Great sun and covered decks. WIFI good. Access to house by claustrophobic elevator only. Lock on outside deck door does not open with the key provided. About 50% or more of light bulbs missing or out including half of elevator lights and no lighting in laundry room. Very limited supplies such as toilet paper, hand soap, dishwasher soap, so bring your own. No instructions provided as to cleanup before leaving. It would have been helpful to have those.
Hello Earnest- We appreciate your feedback! I contacted our local staff and they are hiring a handy man to take care of the sliding glass door and to fix all of the lights.Thank you, again!
Nice home, beautiful view from deck. Would have been a perfect stay if weather had been better. But our pup did'nt mind his walks in the fog and rain, felt it had to be better than snow and frigid cold in Wisconsin. Ken B
If your looking to be away from any sort of crowds this is the place. A great home on the border of the bird sanctuary (make time to enjoy the trail systems through this area - wear bug spray!).
We arrived to find a clean home that has obviously been well cared for overall. Typical lived in home dings and dents but nothing your wouldn't expect to find in any home USA. For the price of this rental home compared to like homes in the same area this is a steal! The house accommodated 3 families including 7 children ranging from age 2-15. Kitchen is spacious and allows plenty of room to work, the covered deck is a great place to relax and spy on the dolphins. The older kids loved the bunk room and having their own private restroom and place to unwind with their music etc, while the adults conversed or played cards in the late evenings.
Get up early and walk down the beach a short distance to enjoy great sunrise views over the fort or watch the cargo and cruise ships sailing in and out of Mobile. Close everything and even during July 4th week (fire works on the beach a family favorite for the kids) the island was quiet with little traffic making exploration to west end and "in town" extremely easy. Take advantage of the local seafood market Skinner's, they have a great selection a fair market pricing that is worth the money. Cooked just about every meal in the house so we can't comment on local dining but we do have a couple of children that will tell you the cinnamon rolls as the Light House bakery were amazing.
Overall very pleased with the condition of the home although it could use a little landscape clean up around the base of the stairs and around the direct perimeter. We did notice the HVAC unit was starving for air so we changed the badly clogged air filters on the returns with the spares in the closet. Little things that did not deter or cloud our opinion of this home or location.
A great experience. Thank you.
We liked the house and the location. We did feel that the bedroom on the lower level could use more comfortable mattresses. Also the TV did not well. The light and the fan are on the same electrical switch, which is fine if you can shut the light off and keep the fan running, but that's not what happens. Also the stairs leading to the second floor should have a motion light on it. Its very dangerous going up and down the stairs at night.
This is a great house and in a great location. Low key and relaxing. House is laid out nicely and kitchen is nicely equipped. Elevator made loading and unloading a breeze. Steps to the beach. The bird sanctuary next door was a nice place to walk and it created an unobstructed view of the ocean from the deck of the house. The fort and aquarium were also fun to discover. Highly recommend.
Best home away from home experience we have had in a long time. The private beach was phenomenal. The peace and quiet were just what we needed. Management was quick to respond to any issues we had and was concerned with our concerns. We did not want to leave and are already planning our next trip.
We are frequent travelers and have been to Shell Cottage twice now in the past two years. We normally don't go to the same place twice, but this place has resulted in the absolute best family vacation both times. I love that Dauphin Island is not a place with lots of people and crazy party goers, perfect for a family with small children. The house is so bright and well decorated, which I can't say for most of the vacation rentals we have stayed at. The beds are very comfortable and there are plenty of rooms and bathrooms to accommodate larger or multiple families, which can make it more cost effective if you are looking to save money. The location is also perfect. The house is about a minute walk away from the beach but it is surrounded by beautiful trees and feels much more secluded than any of the other houses. It is also at the end of the cul-de-sac which adds an additional layer of privacy. I also love that the town is somewhat small and has a biking trail that spans the length of the island. There is also a bird sanctuary within walking distance of shell cottage, so you honestly don't even need to drive much to have a week's worth of family activities. We spent our week spending most of the day on the beach with almost no one in sight. When we weren't at the beach we would go for long bike rides as a family, walk around the bird sanctuary and look for alligators, and even tried to catch crabs at night on the beach. We also biked down to the aquarium one day and took a tour of Fort Gaines. You can also tour the battleship in Mobile which is just a short 45 minute drive away, and there is also Bellingrath gardens about 15 minutes away for short excursions. It was the perfect mix of low-key things to do for a family with small children. The property was also very clean and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything you would need. My only wish is that there was a decent grocery store close by, the ship-n-shore price gouges! Stock up before!
Shell Cottage was perfect for our Fall Break. 2 families (4 adults, 9 kids ages 5-13). We got groceries in Mobile and cooked at the house most of the week (except for a couple of trips to Miguel's, which we recommend). Kitchen was well-stocked; only thing missing was a blender, but we brought one. ADVICE IF YOU STAY THERE: Open all the cabinets, drawers, closets on your first day--they really do have everything! House sits back from the private beach, but you can see well enough from the deck to let the kids play out there. Comfortable beds. Bunk room great for 6 boys. We couldn't figure out the elevator, but it didn't matter enough to ask. We'll definitely be back!
We chose this home for a 4 generation family vacation. It easily accommodated 9 adults and 3 children 6 and under. Our eldest, age 91, although could have used the stairs to the living level, appreciated the elevator. The beach was a short distance from the house so the routine of packing a tent, chairs and beach toys was not a big hassle. An outdoor shower made clean up easy especially for 3 little ones that emerged themself in sea and sand! The location could not have been more peaceful! We had the beach to ourselves and our view was of the natural habitat - this home was on the edge of the Bird Sanctuary, which could be entered to walk the well groomed baths from the beach! No entrance fee required!
Shell Cottage is the perfect location for a quiet getaway. We stayed there over 4th of July and we never had anyone around us on the beach. The water on Dauphin Island was disappointing because we had no idea it would be so brown and murky (apparently Mobile bay feeds into the ocean which causes the murky brown water). We couldn't even see our feet once we stepped in the ocean. The sand was the beautiful soft white sand with a few shells and sand dollars that we would hunt for daily. The house was nice but we did have some cleanliness issues....the inside of almost all kitchen cabinets and drawers were dirty and looked like they had never been cleaned. Every single pot/silverware/cup etc we used we cleaned before hand beause everything was so dirty. I understand that the cleaning crew only has 5 hours to turn the house around but there needs to be some attention given to cleanliness. Also the blankets in the closets were just wadded up and thrown on the shelf. If we wanted a blanket we had to wash those too. After getting past the cleanliness issues and figuring out we had to clean our $3300 rental we enjoyed our stay. The location and quietness of the lot was lovely. Trees and a wonderful walking path to the beach one way and alligator lake the other. We saw dolphins, alligators, multiple turtles, we caught a stingray fishing from the beach, we found sand dollars, a shark tooth and hundreds of hermit crabs. Skinners for Royal Red Shrimp, and Miquel's for Mexican and JTs sunset grill for key lime pie.
FYI....we did contact the mgmt company about the cleanliness issues and a couple other things and they offered to send a cleaning crew. We declined because we were already in the rental and starting our vacation.
Our family had such a great time at the Shell Cottage. Clean and had everything we needed. Rental Company was very easy to work with. Very short walk to the beach. Sitting on the covered porch watching the waves and dolphins was my favorite spot! Highly recommend if you want to get away and relax. Very peaceful. Would rent again if we return to the area.
Lovely home with great views and great outdoor sitting places. Easy access to beach and Audubon Sanctuary.
My family sure enjoyed themselves with lots of fun at the beach. I mostly liked the side deck where I could watch them and dolphins and drink my desired beverage of the moment.
Peaceful, beautiful, amazing views, tranquil, loved the bird sanctuary, highly recommend bike rental. We had an unforgettable week and can't wait to come back!! Loved It!!!
Great location, great kitchen . Large tv's in every room. Covered porch, open deck , comfy beds. Really enjoyed our stay.
