This section of the estuary is right where saltwater from the ocean meets the freshwater from the watershed streams. You'll encounter sections of shoreline, mudflat, and channel if you choose to take your canoe to the bay, or hike the South Slough Estuarine Sanctuary. But, from your patio, you'll have a wonderful view if you choose to stay on land and barbecue on the gas grill!

Charleston is best known as a fisherman's paradise, where visitors can go surf fishing, deep-sea fishing, clamming in the mud flats, and crabbing off the docks. If you want to spend some time on ocean beaches, the gorgeous Shore Acres State Park is only five miles west, as is Sunset Bay State Park. Both of these destinations boast sandy beaches, unique flora, and gorgeous ocean bluffs.

At Shore Acres, be sure to checkout the Simpson Reef Overlook - where you'll be treated to amazing views of Shell Island and Simpson Reef. Many restaurants, shopping, and galleries are all close by in neighboring Coos Bay, but you can stay right in town and pick up fresh seafood for dinner at both the Fisherman's Wharf Floating Seafood Market and Chuck's Seafood.
