With a nearly four-mile crescent stretch of sand, legendarily strong tides, and waves that draw surfers from all over the world, the oceanside town of Jacó has spent decades welcoming visitors to stunning Costa Rica. Less than an hour and a half from the airport, this town of roughly 10,000 residents has made a name for itself with vibrant nightlife, an impressive variety of outdoor recreation, and its close proximity to the capital city of San José. So leave the stresses of city life far behind and escape to one of our Jacó vacation rentals, where you'll find sun, sand, and surf.
Where is Jacó?
At a mere 60 miles southwest of San José - less than two hours away by car - Jacó is the closest major beach town to the capital. The broad, arc-shaped Playa Jacó sits in the center of the coastal region of Puntarenas, at the convergence of the Gulf of Nicoya and the great Pacific Ocean. You'll be just six miles north of Playa Hermosa, six miles south of Playa Herradura, and 13 miles south of Carara National Park.
Things to Do in Jacó
Outdoor activities abound in Jacó, as visitors easily find opportunities for ATV tours, boating, kayaking, horseback riding, and deep sea fishing. But this laid-back resort town is all about the beach, whether you're building sandcastles, soaking in the sun, or paddling out to catch seven-foot waves.
The clean, calm, and scenic Playa Jacó is a favorite among sandcastle builders and sunbathers, whereas Playa Herradura to the north offers a more mountainous and tranquil landscape, as well as a 200-slip marina and 18-hole golf course. Perhaps the most famous beach among surfers, though, is Playa Hermosa to the south, which has hosted International Quicksilver Championships and the International Surfing Association World Surfing Games.
After a day on the sand, join the rest of the beach-goers and backpackers at Jacó's many bars and restaurants. You'll find the freshest fish tacos at the Taco Bar, a constantly changing menu of international cuisine at Lemon Zest, and one of the most scenic settings for sunset cocktails at El Hicaco.
