Puerto Varas, also known as the "City of Roses," is a small, scenic city located in the Los Lagos region of Southern Chile. In Puerto Varas, you'll be about 18 kilometers from the larger city of Puerto Montt, which is the capital of Chile's Llanquihue Province.
This beautiful city boasts stunning scenery, historic architecture, and an abundance of nearby natural sights. With a prime location on the shores of Llanquihue Lake, the second largest lake in Chile, the pristine blue waters provide a breathtaking backdrop for the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes in the distance. A stay in Puerto Varas will be a different experience altogether from one in the larger city of Santiago or the coastal town of Valparaíso, and bustling Viña del Mar - more laid-back and closer to nature.
Puerto Varas has a noteworthy history dating back to the mid-1800s when German immigrants settled in the area. You'll find tranquility in the waterfalls and forests of Vicente Perez Rosales National Park just a short drive from Puerto Varas, and you can sample local river salmon on an expedition to Petrohue Falls, which makes for a gorgeous photo with Osorno volcano as a backdrop. For adrenaline-fueled fun, take a guided rafting trip on the white-water of Petrohue River and share laughs and splashes with your group!
The main square in Puerto Varas features coffee houses, bakeries, and a variety of restaurants that offer great dining options along with top-notch views overlooking Lake Llanquihue. Grab some coffee and breakfast at Caffe El Barista, then for lunch or dinner check out La Marca for Chilean barbecue, and La Jardinera Gastropub for glorious seafood and fusion dishes. End your day on a high note with a delectable dessert at La Gringa.
The cuisine in a number of cafes is notable for their German pastries, especially the "Kuchen" cakes, cookies, handmade chocolates and jams, and traditional German foods. Visit Onces Bellavista and Cafe Danes to sample these delicious goods.
