Set in a mature stand of original-growth Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir on a gentle knoll overlooking the southern end of Lake Coeur d’Alene and surrounded by a private, conservation forest, this simple, esthetic guest house named for and still in the original homestead family offers a serene, natural experience just few miles south of all the recreation Harrison and greater North Idaho have to offer. A couple of hundred yards down a private driveway off a quiet, county-maintained gravel dead-end road, people and traffic are left behind.
Designed for total privacy from the main Selby Knoll manor house, the great room of your guest house lets the towering forest view come into through carefully arraigned Pella windows and skylights. One step outside brings you to an ‘outdoor room’, a spacious deck dappled in sun and shade throughout the day, great for bird watching and occasional game sighting, dining, reading, or just plain lounging. The closest neighbor is a quarter of a mile away through thick pine and fir stands, and the manor house if not open to the public. An acre or so of ‘park-like’ towering forest glen is just off the deck is for your exclusive enjoyment, and a path leads down to a satellite deck with filtered views up and down the southern end of Lake Coeur d’Alene and the ancestral mouth of the Shadowy St Joe River. The slope, forest and view direction all combine to provide for soft morning light, filtered mid-day sun, and spectacular sunsets.
Designed with Prairie-Style influences, your guesthouse is simple and functional, with red oak floors and granite kitchen countertops and furnished with an uncluttered Asian-influenced esthetic reflecting the owners’ many years overseas in the Far East. A large great room has the kitchen, dining, socializing and twin beds. The rest of the main floor is just the master bedroom with a queen bed under a ‘Kudus’ Javanese wall carving, and the bathroom with private forest views and a 100-year old footed tub rescued from Harrison. The basement affords access to the main floor and the washer and dryer.
The guesthouse has efficient forced air heat, very functional air conditioning for those rare hot days, and free WiFi with strong signal inside and out. Selby Knoll has its own well with pure filtered, un-chlorinated water you will want to take home. When you come to Selby Knoll you will leave cable TV and a land-line phone behind. For when not outdoors, a well-stocked collection of books and board games await.
The large deck has a sturdy, powder-coated metal dining set also suitable for working and socializing. A large Javanese teak bench affords lounging the day away in the sounds of a mature northwest forest stand, or a great outdoor sleeping platform. Want tree shade or sun? Just choose your location depending on the time of day.
Stepping off the deck leads to a path down to a private deck in a dramatic setting with the filtered view of Lake Coeur d’Alene to Harrison in the north, to Heyburn State Park to the south, and directly above osprey nests on pilings. Depending on the season, migratory and raptor bird watching for geese, ducks, heron, osprey, owls, woodpeckers and bale eagles is unparalleled. Encounters on the property with white-tailed deer are common, with moose, elk, and black bear sightings from time to time. The paths branch onto the acre or so reserved for meandering and contemplation in the park-like forest. To protect our family forest and in respect to our wildlife open flame and pets are not allowed.
At the end of our road few miles to the south lies Idaho Fish and Game’s Round Lake Sportsman Access. A few miles to the north on a scenic lakeside drive is Harrison, with a marina, general store, dining, antiques, a premier ice cream parlor, plus comprehensive aquatic and cycle rentals, and is the portal to the incredible Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. Farther afield is all the four-season wonderland of North Idaho has to offer with its lakes, rivers, National Forests, and world-class bike trails and parks.
If you want hustle and bustle on one of North America’s grandest lakes, go to Coeur d’Alene. If you want to leave that behind for peace, quiet and solitude and feel like you own a piece of it all for a while, come south to Selby Knoll. A damage waiver, covering up to $2,000 of accidental damage to the property or its contents, is included in the cost of your reservation.
