We loved this quiet, clean, and very private cabin. It had everything we needed and felt super spacious! I would certainly stay here again, for even longer next time!

When another nearby rental (Charming Tiny House on Private 5 Acres hosted by Corinne) cancelled the reservation we made four months in advance (a not so charming experience), we booked this place because it was available. Here are some observations future renters may find useful:

A small cottage set well back from Smugglers Cove Road, this rental shares a 7-acre property with a detached garage and two other houses (occupied by a scarce yet genial owner). The cottage is tucked to one side of the property and surrounded by woods on three sides, so despite the other houses, it still feels private.

The photos in the listing appear to be recent and they are an accurate representation of the rental. The bedroom and bathroom were comfortable and functional. There were plenty of places to put our stuff: a bureau, armoire, luggage stands (yay), bedside tables, and a number of hooks. There was ample lighting: bedside, floor, and overhead, plus free, easily reached outlets for charging devices. The wi-fi was better than other places we’ve stayed on the island. The mattress was comfortable and the pillows were soft but not too soft. The bathroom had counter space, lots of hooks, and a walk-in shower. By far the cottage’s best feature is the French doors that open from the bedroom on to a private deck and grassy area with a fire pit.

The kitchen, with fridge, stacked washer/dryer, and bar-height table all located immediately inside the front door, was less functional. Thinking about it now, we should have used the backdoor, then we could’ve stored our coats and shoes in the bedroom, instead of in front of the fridge. There were enough dishes and a better assortment of pots and pans than many rentals (a big stock pot!). Though some of the pots, pans, and utensils needed to be washed before we could use them. The kitchen sink is a deep utility sink, which was odd, but better than a shallow 2-basin sink. The two-burner hot plate and toaster worked fine. We didn’t use any of the other appliances. An outdoor gas grill would’ve been nice.

The cottage’s biggest drawback is the lack of a lounging area, which was why we didn’t rent it to begin with. The bedroom has one easy chair and one small ottoman. Incorporating a second chair and small side table would up the comfort and functionality considerably.

Overall, our favorite thing about the cottage was the QUIET. There is no other development nearby, you can’t hear the traffic on Smugglers Cove Road, and the 650-acre Trillium Forest land trust lies just beyond the property (be prepared to bushwhack to get to established trails).

We stayed 5 nights and would rent the cottage again, but because of the kitchen and the lack of a “living room”, we’d probably opt for 3 nights or fewer the second time around.

This tiny house in the woods is perfect for a romantic weekend getaway! The king size bed is gigantic and super comfy, and the cabin is packed with any and everything you could ever need. Highly recommend this spot to all!

This little cottage was perfect in every way! It was quiet and comfortable. It also had every amenity imaginable, from ice cube trays to marshmallow roasting skewers!

Although it belongs to a bigger yard with other properties onsite, you really don’t see anyone and it is completely private in my standpoint. Awesome deck to bird watch or stream on tv if the weather is bad. Otherwise, it’s a great middle point to see all sides of the island. Highly recommend this location and I like Vacasa’s local manager being available when needed.

Overall, I had a nice quiet stay at this cozy cabin. Didn't realize from the pictures that this was a part of a larger property with the main house on the property, but it didn't bother my stay, so no worries. Four stars because some of the kitchen utensils could use a refresh - the can opener was completely rusted and the knives were dull. Overall, a great place for a quiet retreat.
Manager response:
Thank you for staying with us, Michael. We are so glad you left your review for us so we know where we need to improve. We will ask the homeowner about sharpening the knives and have removed the rusted can opener. We hope to see you again!

Small and secluded. Everything we needed for a private getaway.

Adorable studio with kitchen, desperately needs ice cube trays, to replace the cracked leaking mini tray.

Screen for deck entrance to keep mosquitoes out , to enjoy the great back yard & fresh air.

Very comfortable bed, kitchen has what you need.

Perfect little cottage just right for one or two people. Has everything you need in a beautiful private setting, with walking trails in the woods right outside the French doors. Clean, cute, and comfy. Would recommend!
Rudolf M. Jul 2021
A small cabin that has it all. Bunnies and deer are walking by in the evening. We loved being immersed in nature.

This precious cottage was perfect for my solo get-away. The grounds are beautiful and a bird lovers paradise. It is perfectly located for exploring the southern part of the island. The house itself had everything I needed and was well maintained. Can't wait to return!

I enjoyed the location of this cottage, it was close to a few conveniences in Freeland while also being in the woods. I appreciated the fire left out in the fire pit, the coffee pods, good television for winding down at night, etc. We didn’t use the washer and dryer but so nice to have available. We saw a cute little fawn with spots, definitely a bonus!

Like most rentals, some things could have been a little cleaner but I think that about every place I stay. The dish drying rack and cupboard shelves were in need of a wash. The kitchen does not have a stove but the plug in two burner was just fine for a few days. The house is nearby the property owner’s home FYI. There’s not full curtains in all the windows but not a problem as no one walked that way.

This was a great place for some much needed time away from work and life. For prayer and reflection, it was a nice location. Secluded, a small trail of sorts in the back “yard”, a fire pit for those interested, and enough amenities to make do sufficiently. You will need to adjust the heat depending on time of year. It is a small quaint space, but great if that’s what you are looking for. The folks left a guide to area parks and beaches which was a God send for me, an avid hiker. I think the only addition that would be nice is some small curtains for the windows in the bedroom. Otherwise, this is a wonderful place to get away from everything for a short while.

We had a really lovely time on this trip. It’s close to walks on the beach and quiet trails and I’d definitely recommend bringing firewood for the fire pit in the backyard! There were a few wonky things we didn’t account for mostly in the kitchen, such as the fact that there’s no oven and only a 2-top stove but that and the small toaster oven still got the job done. Also the salt and pepper was empty, and there were no other spices so I would recommend bringing your own.
In the last 2 hours of our stay the outlets stopped working and we couldn’t find any circuit breaker, so that was a bit of a bummer.
Overall it’s a great escape but make sure you account for the kitchen!

We stayed here for a week and loved every moment! This cottage was clean and had everything we needed. WiFi worked great and loved the mini trails on the property. Each night we sat by the fire pit and listened to the forest sounds. Simply the best place to relax and unplug! We will return one day.

The site for this place is nice, and overall, the unit is fine. But there a few things that just have to resolved:. (1) it needs window treatments - no privacy in someone's yard is not acceptable; (2) there needs to be some furniture on the back porch - a table and some chairs would be nice; and (3) crawling under the porch to access the key is the worst access I've ever seen - it just isn't acceptable. They need a wall-mounted key box.
Manager response:
Hi, Melissa! Thank you so much for the review and helpful feedback! Please be assured we will pass your feedback for window treatments along to the homeowner for their consideration. Typically during our winter months we take most outdoor furniture off decks. We do encourage guests to reach out if those items are needed. We will be moving the lockbox to an easier area for future guests. You were perfect guests, and we look forward to next time!

I was telling my boyfriend that if I were to decorate a little cottage, this is exactly what it would look like! So cute and cozy and while we didn't get to use the fire pit, it still looked really nice out there... we plan on using it next time. We will definitely be back. Very clean and and an easy checkout process. Can't wait to go back.

Color scheme lovely, everything matched! Bed was very soft, kitchen loaded for light cooking, and overall a beautiful small home. Needs: Kleenex, small sofa, and some games.

This place was perfect! Quiet, serene and peaceful. We will definitely be back!
Sherri G. Mar 2020
Not much time to enjoy the beautiful scenery as I was working on a construction project while out. However, the conveniences of the cabin were perfect!
