The house was close to the beach and offered the basic necessities. I would recommend this house to any family with dogs.

The house is modest, but in very good repair (everything works!), clean, with a fully functional kitchen, comfortable beds, air conditioning, and lots of space. Wi-Fi works well (important for us, as cell service in this area for our service provider - T-Mobile - is very poor). It's a short block from the shore, and very close to access to a public beach. We brought our dog (border collie), and all had a really nice week here! Highly recommended!

My family was the first guest at the end of August for this just-listed property. While described as rustic, I more accurately call it unkempt. I am surprised about the condition it is in, especially since the owner had six weeks to prepare before we got there.
The owner’s personal hygiene and miscellany items were in dresser drawers, and also in the bathroom, so we did not feel welcome to use them. After searching, we found the second “bathroom” in the basement. The toilet and sink are separate from the shower. The sink had a major drip disguised by a fancy-folded soaking-wet towel over the faucet. The shower is in an adjoining room resembling a fake sauna. It was dirty with a large amount of hair at the drain. The basement floor was puddled with water, and a soaking-wet “beach towel” was left sitting on the open door of the dryer. The basement had various items strewn about, and we only went down there once more to look for BBQ items.
Cable TV was just purchased since user set-up was not complete. We did so so we could use it. We went grocery shopping Saturday morning, and by Sunday morning our fresh meat was spoiling. Frantic, I called Vacasa who responded right away. Within an hour, Kyle came to assess the problem and report to his supervisor. Then later Adam, maintenance super, came. This brand-new refrigerator was put in but inadvertently not properly set. He adjusted the temperatures. In the meantime, Maria, the local property manager, called to say Kyle was on this way back with a cooler and ice to help us while the refrigerator adjusted. Monday, Mark came by just to make sure the refrigerator was still working fine. These people were the best support that guests could expect.
The house was dirty. I wiped up a spill I made in the kitchen and discovered the floor was very dirty. I random-checked areas in all the rooms and found that they were all dirty, as though they were never mopped. There were dust balls and cobwebs piled on and blocking the air vents, dust and cobwebs at nearly all the floor-meet-wall perimeters, the sun porch was not swept and all windows were loaded with cobwebs and leaves, the throw rug at the sun porch door was pet stained, and the seat cushions worn down. We did not use the sun porch. I swept up the inside of the house to an extent but heck, we were on vacation. If I wanted to do spring cleaning, I would have stayed home. (By the way, I did finish my own spring cleaning at home). The rungs on a dining chair were broken. Much of the furniture (especially dressers) needed a touch-up repair. The exterior of the house was loaded from ground to eaves with dirt and spider webs and not swept down. It’s crazy, but a lawn bag of leaves was left in the middle of the basement floor!
The counter top in the kitchen was cleaned. The vintage stove was fun for nostalgia, but it was not clean – a bit of Barkeeper’s Friend would work – and its oven had baked-on food and ash. The liquid soap at the sink and the rinse aid for the dishwasher were overly watered down. I wouldn’t call the kitchen “fully-equipped” as it needs more basic items (e.g., pasta fork, serving spoons) and towels, and a better and newer selection of pots and pans. But yay, thanks for the Keurig. The house did not have a gas grill as listed. Instead, it was a Weber kettle with no grilling tools or charcoal.
Yes, the bathroom sink was cleaned and towels were fresh. Rust stains at bathtub drain were covered up with house paint instead of using a tub and tile refinishing kit. Tub very worn-out. There were no mats on the floor. Yes, the bed linens were fresh. The king-size bed was uncomfortable resulting in morning backaches. The pillows in the queen bedroom were flat and uncomfortable. I looked inside one and found it was stuffed with cotton batting instead of a pillow! This room’s entire closet floor space was used as a catchall for beach chairs – one of which was defective – , etc. No place for guests to put their luggage. The lighting in the entire house was inadequate. Unnoticed by housekeeping, I had to replace a bulb in the kitchen that was burned out when we got there.
These are just some of the things that spoiled our experience at this house. I can’t picture that Vacasa inspected the property before renting it. This house was not ready. On top of all of that –use the Geico gecko’s whining voice here – there was no welcome basket!!
We have been staying in Michiana for nine years now renting through Yellow Bird Vacations (“YBV”). This is our first time with Vacasa. I am disappointed as this house does not come close to the standards we are used to. I feel strongly that YBV would not have listed this house. We would have left this rental if it wouldn’t have been so much trouble moving. When I booked, I remember our usual homes were already taken or not renting at all because of COVID-19. We just sucked it up and stayed. We love being in Michiana and enjoyed our village neighborhood and New Buffalo. Thanks for listening.
Manager response:
We sincerely apologize for the issues you encountered and wish you had called local staff for assistance during your visit. The property manager will be inspecting your concerns so we can ensure everything is in good shape for our guests. Thank you!

The walking distance to the beach and cleanliness of the main floor are about all this home has to offer UNLESS you’re adventurous and enjoy an extremely steep climb down to the water laden, musty-snarling basement to utilize the washer/dryer and/or the advertised second bathroom. If you don’t mind the live cockroach and hair left behind in the shower down there, this may be your place. Bath towels also came with tenants of previous users. It was gross!

The location of this cottage is perfect. A short walk to the beach, beautiful neighborhood, and close to everything you want or need for a Lake Michigan vacation.
I want to point out that both Adam and Maria were amazing. Both very professional and helpful in every way. Maria made sure we had everything we needed and when the area lost power, she made sure we were okay and made as comfortable as she was able to do.
We will be back and look forward to next year
