People in surrounding areas were not too friendly ie grocery store, ski lodge. Nothing you can control though :)

There was a decently priced gear rental a couple minutes down the main road. We also had some pizza from a place down the road, but it was quite expensive and was not blow your mind pizza.

Once here there is really no reason to leave! River, porch, outdoor fire pit, grill. And the inside is absolutely awesome in its original beams and time period artifacts and wall hangings.

We went white water rafting at Wet Planet in WA, which was one of my favorite parts of the trip. It's about an hour and a half from the cabin.

We loved the fly fishing shop just up the street, Mike there was amazing and super helpful! We also really enjoyed the Ramada Falls hike, which is fairly close off the Lolo pass road.

There was ongoing heavy construction right in front of the property. Mechanical load noise was very load, we could not hear each other talking. Of course, our 3 days getaway trip was killed.

Sorry I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but they had great Halibut Fish and Chips. The restaurant is on the south side of the road, and the first restaurant east of the fly fishing shop. It might be the Barlow Trail Roadhouse.

Trillium Lake is a beautiful scenic lake that showcases Mt. Hood wonderfully. We got a canoe from Mt. Hood Adventure and they delivered it and picked it up at the lake for us.

The hiking trail along the river should be noted in the book somewhere. It's a very nice hike for anyone with a dog.

Convenient to Gov't camp and close to Portland. It's a nice in-between location for a weekend getaway. Was a bit disappointed with the location of the house in the sense that it's not secluded at ALL. It's smack in the middle of a neighborhood and we were hoping for more of a cabin in the woods vibe.

    Ryan H.

SkiBowl was small and quite for skiing/snowboarding, hiking was excellent, however Mirror Pond was closed in the winter. Trillium Lake is a very busy trail that is beautiful.

The thriftway grocery store down the street about 5 minutes is highly overpriced. I recommend you buy groceries on the way into town in Sandy at the Safeway. Also we visited Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood that was just a short 30 minute drive and well worth the gorgeous views from the mountain. And the cabin is only about 50 minutes from the Columbia River Gorge. We went two days to hike some famous trails including moltnomah falls which is so gorgeous! And if you have time go to the town Hood River and visit Full Sail Brewery and pub, great beer!
  • Brightwood

    Stephanie L.

We loved hiking along the river behind the cabin, as well as the access to the many hiking trails in the area, including the Ramona Falls loop!

If you are a big hiker like us, the McNeal point and Ramona falls are great hikes. If you want a very short hike, ZigZag falls is close and easy. Bug spray is essential! Mirror kake was nice and a gentle 3 miles. Timberland lodge is a must at sunset. If you don't mind a drive, Bagby hot springs is an easy hike to a great soak.

We really enjoyed the little hike with our 5-year-old granddaughter to Little Zig Zag Falls and playing along the banks of the Sandy River just down the street from the cabin. We also enjoyed spending time in the hot tub and making s'mores using a fire in the fire pit in back. We ate at Zig Zag Inn one evening and the food was ok, but the atmosphere was fun. The Skyway Bar and Grill was a very fun family experience with its outside seating and activities available for kids and the BBQ was good. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay!

Trillium Lake approximately 17 miles to the east on Hwy 26 is a must visit; especially during clear skies. The view of Mt. Hood and the lake are extraordinary...quite possibly one of the best views on planet Earth!

We took our 6 young kids on two BEAUTIFUL hikes into Mirror Lake & Zigzag Falls. Both were gorgeous scenery & very doable for all but the 2yr old who, as expected, needed to be carried a few times. We are excited to see Mirror Lake again when the weather is clear & Mt Hood is actually visible :)

we loved the small town atmosphere. and the pizza at mogul pizza was absolutely amazing. I would recommend maybe going to a grocery store before heading up, the local grocery store hoodland thriftway was ridiculously overpriced. im guessing because there is no other grocers up there.

The wide open National Forest is within miles, but there is not much else is around. There are a few restaurants and a few grocery places nearby. For a person from the congested east coast it is very wide open. If you go enjoy the outdoors be prepared for long stretches away from 'civilization', but that is what you are there for, right?!?
