How to Reach Vashon Island, WA
The only way to reach Vashon Island is by air or by sea. The Washington State Ferries link the island to Tacoma to the south
and West Seattle to the north
. Ride one of the ferries and admire the Olympic Mountains to the west and Mount Rainier and the Cascade Range to the east. On your way to your Vashon Island vacation rental, you might even catch sight of one of the Orca families that call Puget Sound their home!
Things to Do on Vashon Island, WA
Vashon features many unique restaurants like the Hardware Store, Rock Island Pub and Pizza, Snapdragon (featuring vegetarian food), Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi, and May Kitchen + Bar, which has been acclaimed the best Thai restaurant in the region. The town has interesting shops and art galleries, as well as Granny’s Attic, a must-see shop featuring all donated goods.
For the outdoor enthusiasts, Vashon Island has much to offer. Visit Jensen Point to rent a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard, or go to KVI Beach to play on the sandy spit that grows at low tide. The most visited park is Point Robinson on Maury Island, with it’s always changing driftwood scene and the Point Robinson Lighthouse. The most breathtaking site is the overlook on Maury Island with its view toward Tacoma, Puget Sound, and Mount Rainier.
The most visited site is near the center of the island just off the main highway, where a tree has grown with an abandoned bicycle in its embrace. The Bicycle in the Tree is known worldwide. It was featured by Ripley’s Believe it or not, filmed by a Japanese television program, and Berkeley Breathed wrote a colorful children’s book about it. Although vandalized in 2014, the famous bike and tree are still visible, locked forever by time.
Seasonal Activities & Events on Vashon Island, WA
Bicyclists ferry over from the mainland to ride on the island’s country roads. In September, cyclists come to participate in the Passport to Pain, a challenging ride down to the water’s edge and then back up to a number of island sites. Runners come to race in the annual Festival races in July, and the ultramarathon fifty-mile or ten-mile trail race through the Island Center Forest.
In July, visitors and islanders alike enjoy the annual Strawberry Festival with its parade and fun activities. A sheep herding event in June at Misty Isle Farm draws competitors from all over the region. The Vashon Center for the Arts hosts a Garden Tour in June, and two art tours in June and December.
