Stunning, dog-friendly lakefront home with a dock - mountain & lake views!
Enjoy majestic lakefront views of the sunrise, sunset, and surrounding Sierra Nevada at this three-bedroom (plus a loft) Donner Lake retreat, a dog-friendly waterfront home with a private dock and buoy, two tree-lined decks, and nearby access to beaches, tennis, and world-class skiing.
This three-level home sits directly on the southern shores of Donner Lake, only one mile from boat rentals, barbecue areas, and tennis and basketball courts at West End Beach. You'll be just a few steps from the water's edge, five miles east of Sugar Bowl Resort, and seven miles east of Boreal Mountain Resort.
You'll immediately feel at home in the great room, a showcase of alpine character with lofty cathedral ceilings and a wall of windows that frame the forest and lake. Grab a few logs to build a fire in the stone hearth, curl up with a good book, or catch up with friends and family on one of the comfortable leather sofas.
Drop your kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the dock for a morning outing on the lake and return home to prepare pancakes in the full kitchen. You'll have all the necessary appliances to whip up a homemade breakfast, as well as four bar stools, an open dining space for seven, and a dishwasher to handle the clean-up.
Spend your summer days swimming, water-skiing, or wake boarding in the crystal clear waters of Donner Lake, fishing or dangling your feet from the pier, and gazing at the mirror-like reflection of the mountains at sunset. Pull up a beach chair to enjoy the view, light the gas grill for a barbecue dinner, and retreat to the two-level deck for an evening of cocktails and cards.
On snowy winter nights, you can make popcorn and hot chocolate as you use the WiFi to check the next morning's mountain conditions. You'll also have a large flatscreen cable TV, DVD player, and VCR in the living room - the perfect cozy spot for family movie nights.
With three bedrooms, a spacious loft, and two full bathrooms, this Donner Lake retreat can sleep as many as 10 guests. On the ground floor, you'll find a master bedroom with a king-size bed, a guest room with a double bed, a full bathroom, and a private laundry room. The main floor features one bedroom with a double bed and one adjacent full bathroom.
Climb the ladder from the great room to reach the large upstairs loft, where children and fun-loving friends will delight in the four twin beds that sit beneath the eaves. Your canine family member is also welcome to join you for a small nightly fee.
Whether you're planning a winter ski trip or a stunning summer getaway on the water, there are few more scenic destinations than the shores of Donner Lake. Spend the summer basking in the sun on West End Beach, fish or water-ski on the shores of Donner Memorial State Park just two miles east, or take a short nine-mile drive to spend an evening in historic downtown Truckee. This area also offers plentiful opportunities for golf, road biking, and mountain biking.
Come winter, the four peaks of Sugar Bowl offer 103 trails, 13 lifts, and 1,650 acres of skiing and snowboarding for athletes of all skill levels. Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Northstar are also just a short drive away.
The gorgeous scenery of the Sierras will be right outside your door - don't miss out on this beautiful Donner Lake home!

We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin is rustic and well located, right on the water. The management company is very customer focused and their cleaning service did a great job.

Perfect location!!!! Lots of space. The fridge doesn’t get cold, so bring ice. Recommend for families with children older than 4.
Minh P.Oct 2019
Water is right in front if the house which is great. However the house is too old and dirty.
We are glad you enjoyed the view. We will look into your concerns and we hope to host you again in the future.

What I liked about this property: first in for most was the amazing beautiful view of the lake. This cabin had just about everything you would need. Fully stocked with towels and linens, kitchen supplies. Very well stocked. Yes the other reviews said there were cobwebs, there were, but really not that big of a deal. It’s a cabin , we’re in the woods I kinda except it! For the price I think this is a fantastic deal, I would recommend this property.

The house is exactly what you'd expect a lake cabin to be. View iss amazing, lake access terrific. House is older, but quaint. Supplies (dishes, pots & pans, outdoor chairs) are sufficient. Only negative - the beds are very soft, all of them.

The good :Location,Location,Location...this house cannot be beat in this regard. Steps from the water, private dock which we spent most of our time on: canoeing, sailing, kayaking, swimming and just hanging out. Donner lake is a fabulous place. The trip was great. This was our 2nd summer and we already booked again for 2020.
The bad: the house although very spacious definitely needs some updating. It’s old and worn and although that is part of its charm rotted wood decking and dock mooring arms and folding lounge chairs that are falling apart are not.
The ugly: the house is dirty! Cob webs all over that have probably been there for years. Dining table was not even wiped down when we got there. Carpet is dirty and stained. Closets full of discarded trash items that were there last year. There’s no other way to put it:, it is just dirty. The worst; the comforters which were not only dirty but stained. When we called the main office regarding comforters I was told they would make a note of it for the future. Calling the main number is a waste of time; bad attitude completely indifferent and and just got company policy script from guy on phone. Local management people were helpful they immediately picked up comforters and washed them same day. Came back clean but stained. We are not picky, we do not expect the ritz. In fact for this type vacation we prefer an old school rustic cabin type house. But I believe that common decency dictates that at the very least bedding linen be clean for goodness sake. The location, the views and the private dock are fabulous and we will go there again next year. But Vacasa needs to check their corporate conscious. I’m sure execs in charge would never have their children sleep in soiled linen yet they allow their customers to do so. All this coming from a business owner who appreciates the mandate for profits but disregarding common decency is just bad business. Other than that we love the place!
Thank you for your feedback. We have addressed this with the local staff and they we make sure the housekeeping staff is checking for cobwebs and removing them. We strive to have 5-star cleans, and we apologize for arriving to a dirty home that did not meet your expectations. We are pleased to hear that the local staff addressed the issue. We want to thank you again for your feedback and hope to impress you at a future stay.

I feel the need to be balanced in my review. Some of the criticisms of the property are fair. There are a number of items 'past their prime' as pointed out by other reviewers. So, if you are looking for top-shelf accommodations with first-class finishes, you should look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a "chill" location in the middle of it all with functional but not perfect amenities, this may be a good choice for you. Communication was good (responsive to email), check in was easy (lock box), and the lakefront house with private dock met our expectations. The dog and the mother-in-law were comfortable on the main level, and our ten-year-old loved the loft. Most of the essentials are available and functional. The internet speed was surprisingly good (I ran a speed test), and the coffee maker supported my caffeine habit. The floors definitely squeak, which can be hard for those staying downstairs if you have an early riser in the family. All in all, it was wholly enjoyable with some room for improvement. I would consider staying here again.

Awesome cabin. Awesome view

This is the second time we have stayed at this cabin. It has lots of cobwebs, which enhances the old time feel of the cabin. It is not the cleanest or newest place, but the ambiance is perfect.
Margaret B.Jul 2018
The view of the lake was amazing, 5+. We swam off the pier and watched the fireworks from there on the 4th. The house has so much potential, just needs a little TLC. The owner has replaced the old TV with a smart TV. We encountered a few glitches over the visit but the property managers were very responsive. We definitely would rent this cabin again.

This house is tri-level and easily sleeps 10.The view is amazing and it’s dog friendly. It’s old school Grandmas cabin in the woods. Perfectly cozy.

We have stayed here the last two years in April and its a great place to enjoy sunsets on the lake and has quick, easy access to Sugar Bowl Resort.

Overall we were very pleased with the house and found it comfortable, but I’d caution future guests (esp those with kids) about a few items:
-the wind guard on the dock pictured is VERY CLOSE to completely falling off. We discovered this in a scary moment when the kids were playing on the bench and I saw that the wooden supports holding up the guard were basically broken in two. A rope was lashed around the guard and bench to hold it up, barely. Very dangerous.
-we brought our dog (and many clean up bags) on vacation with us...and soon discovered that many many dogs had also been guests here. The property outside was spotted all over with dog feces that had not been cleaned up and now was frozen into the snow. If the managers put out a supply of doggy bags and maybe provided an outside can for this type of garbage (we set up our own paper bag system on the porch), I suspect the problem would diminish.
-the lights were off when we entered the house for the first time and I nearly fell down a flight of stairs within two steps of the threshold. It would be a good idea to offer a baby gate to guests with kids or at least make sure the stairway lights are always on for incoming guests. Plus an optional one for the loft ladder :)
-it would be great to have some board games/etc available for guests!
-the main floor bedroom bed is very old and squeaky; I think the slat in the center must be broken because the whole thing sags in the middle.
We apologize for any inconveniences this guest encountered during their visit here. The wind guard is scheduled for repair. We have gone through and removed all dog poop and provided dog poop bags and a small trash can to encourage guests to pick up after their pets. The owner is currently shopping around for a new mattress and will be providing board games in the near future. Thank you!

Very convenient, clean, equipt, warm, safe, large place with a fantastic view of Donner Lake at this property. On the boardwalk you feel like you are in heaven.

We were all so VERY pleased with the stay at this beautiful, overall well-kept lakefront home! Sooo relaxing and a tranquil environment...just what we needed! The floorplan is also very nice...3 levels , with each room and bathroom situated very nicely! Kitchen and dining area, as well as living room are all very nice size. Master bedroom downstairs is big and very spacious! You simply cannot beat the private dock for fishing and boating! It was our favorite part of the entire trip! Simply breathtaking! This home is perfect for a relaxing trip with a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding mountains! All of the Vacasa staff was very nice and helpful throughout the process! Very pleased...We'll definitely be back!

This house is in a wonderful location right on the lake. It has a beautiful view from the kitchen, front room, deck, and master bedroom. The house is old and has the potential to be awesome. I would not recommend this property in the winter for older folks though as the driveway is steep and the entry to the front steps is also steep.
Property management was quick to resolve a few minor issues which we appreciated.
Overall we did have a great time in this house and would stay again. Be aware of bears, we were woken to one on our deck one night trying to get in a tackle box. Gave us all a scare.
Housekeeping should have been much better. Hopefully housekeeping will be improved for future guests.
William P.Aug 2017
Place is pretty dated but the lake front made up for it. I would stay there again because of the lake front location great dock for a boat. Swimming etc.
Kurt S.Aug 2017
Perfectly situated lakeside cabin is a quiet gem.
Valerie C.Aug 2017
circa 1960 interior with very outdated kitchen, wood paneling and track lighting all make interior very dark and a bit depressing. outdated linoleum flooring, some old an rusted pots in kitchen. wall electric heaters might be an issue in the winter.
If home is updated would be awesome because location is awesome for summer.
Driveway is so steep I would not stay here in the snow.

Our four-day stay at this home turned out to be better than expected. The home’s location can’t be better! The view from the deck, yard, and pier are very special. The living room furniture was comfortable. You need to be prepared when renting this property. Bring sharp knives, steak knives, and barbecue tools. We brought our own table and chairs for the deck and yard. There were only two white plastic chairs on the upper deck with the barbecue and one chair with an old round wood table on the lower deck. There was also had two white plastic chaise lounges by the shore. We bought cushions for the bench on the pier to make it usable. The biggest complaint by family members that were with us was the poor lighting throughout the house. Be very careful walking up to the front door; more than one person tripped on the unexpected step down at the front door. Lighting is needed when approaching the front steps as it is very difficult to see your way from the parking area to the front door at night. As stated by other reviewers, the home is not the cleanest especially the floors. After washing the sliding doors, using the vacuum, doing repairs to the oven knob, and adding bistro lights on the deck railing for our stay, we had a great time. It was nice being on the lake.
We're sorry the guest had to further the clean the home after they arrived. We take great pride in assuring the house is prepared before check-in. The property manager is scheduling the carpets to be cleaned in two weeks and he's added replacement knives and BBQ tools. Thank you.

My two positive comments are that the view and the dock at this property are amazing. We enjoyed every minute of that part. Also, there were plenty of bath towels and sheets.
Unfortunately the bad out weights the good by a lot. The house itself was extremely disappointing and we would not want to stay here again unless all of these things were given attention/fixed. We had high hopes based mainly on reviews and I feel like most of the reviews were not accurate.
- no matches to light a fire
- hole in living room door
- most of the electrical outlets did not work - the cord would fall right out of the wall
- said the home was stocked kitchen wise - only 2 dish towels, no dish clothes, felt that the plates, bowels and silverware etc. were very under stocked for a home able to house so many people
- main dial on stove falls off
- heater in the downstairs master did not work and the dial was missing
- huge hole in the main floor bathroom sink - very unsightly
- bathrooms are in need of major updates, especially the downstairs bathroom - when adjusting the shower head the whole pipe pulls away from the wall.
- would have been great to know that the "DVD player" is a combo VHS player in the mini TV downstairs. We had to go buy a DVD player - that was extremely disappointing!
The house was "surface clean" at best. The number one disappointment was that we felt this property was very dirty. Although we knew it would be old, dirty is unacceptable for us. We've rented properties for 12 years at Donner Lake (this was the first though Vacasa) and it was by far the dirtiest! We felt it was dirty as soon as we arrived and the whole time we were there. If you walked around bare foot your feet would end up black, as were our white socks. The cabin was dark and dingy feeling and the lighting in every room was horrible. The overall feeling inside this home I would say is depressing.
This home has such potential to be a great rental, but it is far from there. It needs a deep, deep cleaning from top to bottom and many things need to be fixed, repaired and updated throughout.
Overall, we were sorry we choose this property and we were very disappointed with it. We will not be returning.
Jimmy S.Jun 2017
Overall it is a great location with solid views. Access to fishing was great and you get the rustic cabin feeling. Outdated kitchen appliances, floor was very dirty and just need some overall TLC. The one thing you got all the time was instant hot water for lots of showers. Granted the down stairs shower had some issues, but it did the job.
We will have housekeeping be more mindful of the floors. Thank you!
Sam T.May 2017
We loved the view of Donner Lake!
Glenn P.May 2017
Property has a ton of potential but is in rough shape.. dull dinghy and dirty inside and out. Would not choose to stay at this property again but would stay on donner lake elsewhere
A deep clean has just been finished at this home that includes the exterior now that the snow has melted. Thank you!

Our group of friends was very happy with our stay at the Donner Lake Cabin in early March 2017. The home was dated but comfortable. We had lots of room for each couple to have their own privacy. The location was nice even though the view of the lake was obscured by a mountain of snow on the deck. We got pounded with snow during our stay but the driveway, which was very steep, was quickly plowed so we could walk up to our vehicles parked off the road. I could only imagine it would be an even nicer spot for a summer visit to Donner Lake!

Great lakefront property. Had everything we needed and was a great location to Northstar!

We had a wonderful Christmas family vacations at your property. The kids really like the attic bedroom and spent long time play card games there. The lake view in early morning and late afternoon is gorgeous. We took many Lake pictures.
The water heater capacity is relatively small though. It ran out of hot water after four persons take shower. I hope it can be replaced with a larger capacity water heater.
