Escalante sits at the heart of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, nearly 1.9 million acres of red rock canyons, slot canyons, and high desert wilderness. Scenic Byway 12 runs right through town, one of the most scenic drives in the country, connecting to Bryce Canyon to the west and Capitol Reef to the east. The Escalante Canyons area is the most-visited section of the monument, with hikes to Peek-a-Boo and Spooky slot canyons, Zebra Canyon, and Calf Creek Falls all within reach. Downtown Escalante is small but has a few local restaurants and outfitters for gear, guided hikes, and canyoneering trips. This is remote country — cell service is spotty, gas stations are few and far between, and services thin out fast once you're off the highway — so it rewards visitors who come prepared and willing to slow down.
Fall is one of the best times of year to visit. Temperatures drop out of summer's heat and monsoon season winds down, making the slot canyons safer and far more comfortable to explore. Mornings are cool enough for a full day on the trail, and the cottonwoods along the Escalante River start to turn through October and into November.
To make the most of your stay, we recommend a car to get around. Our hotel offers ample onsite parking at no additional charge.
The city of Escalante is a small town with a walkable main street that has various nearby restaurants and grocery stores nearby. However, keep in mind that store hours vary by season and summer temperatures can make walking taxing for those not accustomed to the heat.
