The location is five stars. The house is 1 or 2 stars. Here’s a list of things I wish we had known before booking. The house is perpetually damp - literally damp. I understand it’s tropical but very challenging to have damp sheets, floors and toilet paper. Zoom in closely on the windows and you’ll see louvers - these don’t fully close. Even though there are screens, the gnats, noise, moisture and lizards are a problem. We don’t mind the 2” anoles (after all, it’s tropical) but killed a few ants in clothing and relocated 6” geckos every day. Downstairs bathroom is a big collection since it’s open to the outside. The sofa bed was so painful that we put the mattress on the floor. The carpet and couches are stained, all of the cabinetry is so old that the doors don’t close and there are dead gnats everywhere. Even at a normal volume, we heard all of our neighbor’s conversations. We booked for four nights and after the first night I tried to reach vacasa with no response. It wasn’t so bad that I wanted to pay for a second vacation spot, but it is by far the most misrepresented vacation rental we have ever booked. I read the one bad review and discounted the issues. In hindsight, I think they were very generous in their review. If you are just booking for the beach and looking only for a place to crash, the location is excellent. If you are looking for a cozy cottage, to play games or cook and hang out as part of your vacation, keep looking.
Manager response:
Thank you for staying with us, Amy. This home is located in an area known for being wet, buggy, and damp this time of year due to the rain and salt air. We are ordering a dehumidifier to hopefully help with the moisture in the home. The louver windows are open to allow the home to cool since there is no air conditioning. We have verified all screens are intact. We inspected the cabinets and drawers and were able to repair the one of its roller. The sofa bed is new, but we are looking for additional padding for the mattress. The carpets and couches have all been cleaned. Hopefully we can host you again for a more positive experience in the future.

So close to the beach. Very short walk to a great beach. The house was well equipped unless you needed spoons. The second bedroom is a pretty limited space, but it works. Nice layout for privacy and the grounds are great.

This house was in a great home and location walking distance from the beach. It had a full stocked kitchen (non-food items) and the laundry was a nice bonus. Make sure you're ok without ac though as it gets pretty hot.

Beach across the street is amazing - sun and shade, snorkeling, swimming, and privacy. Close to Princeville and Hanalei, and Kilauea has a wonderful small up-scale village.

Great and secluded house steps away from Anini Beach. Quiet and backs onto jungle like setting, yet walk right across the street to the beach. House was well maintained and kept and was perfect for our family. Loved having the snorkel, beach toys and boogie boards available to use.

Our only issues were that the kitchen sink leaked quite a bit when the faucet was turned on, and the bugs in the back bathroom freaked out my wife. Other than that we loved our stay and would definitely recommend it to other families.
Manager response:
Hi James! Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that there were a leak and bug issue. Since your departure, we have had the home professionally treated for pests and had the sink repaired. We do apologize that these details were missed prior to your arrival and we do hope that you'll consider us again in the future to host you!

Lovely Ohana and the separate quarters were perfect for privacy within a group. The layout of this home and privacy was really nice. Loved being across street from the ocean and the home was comfortable and well stocked. Would rent this place again for sure.

Excellent location. Fantastic to be near the beach and have a forest next to your back yard. Nice cottage. Excellent kitchen. Many thoughtful features.

We had a lovely stay with our adult daughter in the Anini Ohana Hale house. The public entry to Anini beach is across the street from the house and therefore it is an easy walk to beautiful Anini Beach. The layout of the house worked for us as my husband and I had one section of the house and our daughter had the other. Giving privacy for both. We enjoyed our week stay on the North side of Kauai.

The location is perfect and the house is pretty good. The beach across the streets is so close and perfect for young kids. It feels almost private. The house was mostly great but a few things could make it a little more comfortable. The kitchen seriously lacked some essential items or what was there was damaged (scratched nonstick pans, limited storage containers, plates, no bakeware). Also, there is no dining table just a very high counter with heavy stools. This made dining with our young kids very difficult and messy. There are 2 tv areas and the one off of the kitchen would make a better dining area then living. Otherwise, the house is great and I’d stay again since the kids will most definitely be older.
Manager response:
Philip, we are so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your valuable feedback with us. We will be sure to pass your suggestions regarding the kitchenware along to our local manager who will work with our homeowner to make necessary upgrades. We look forward to hosting you again!

We stayed at Anini Ohana Hale for 9 nights, and loved it! It was very homey and comfortable and had everything we needed. The location was wonderful in quiet and peaceful Anini Beach. It was a short drive to Kilauea, Princeville and Hanalei, and a gorgeous
40 minute drive to Ke'e Beach at the end of the road. Although it is not the very best beach for snorkeling compared to Tunnels, Ke'e, and Poipu, it is decent (we *did* see some fish and turtles). It IS, however, the best swimming beach due to its very long (about 2 miles) protective reef. It is also an excellent place for SUP boarding and kayaking. The home is about a 1 minute walk across the street to the beach, which is one of the best things about staying at this home. The kitchen & laundry room were certainly handy to have. There is a large backyard facing jungle and a dining table and barbecue grill. The outdoor area for cleaning after the beach or a muddy hike that is mentioned in the description is actually just a garden hose, unlike all the other vacation homes where we have stayed on Kauai that have outdoor showers. The main house that is facing the street has a shower, however this is the guest cottage in the back and the shower is not shared. The air conditioning units in most of the rooms were very loud. We turned them off and opened all the window louvers and turned on all the ceiling fans. That provided enough cooling and air circulation, and it was nice to hear the birds instead of electric air conditioning units. I could tell, however, the AC would be necessary if it was very hot, however it was not so during our stay (end of September-early October). Beach towels, beach chairs and other beach equipment or available for use. All in all this vacation home is excellent and we would certainly stay here again.

The location can’t be beat. It’s just across the street from Anini beach.

This is probably the best vacation rental I've had. Location is wonderful for the north side. Proximity to the beach is unbeatable, and we really enjoyed having a backyard. The house was much bigger than we expected from the floorplans, and stocked with just about everything we could have wanted. The freestanding air conditioners were a lovely unexpected bonus. I almost don't want to leave a review so this doesn't get popular so we don't have trouble booking it again. I want to come back already.

This place is amazing. House layout is cool and the amenities (kitchen, beach toys, wifi, tv, etc.) are all well thought out. Clearly the owner cares about the property. This rental is essentially a guest house located right behind one of the larger villa style houses. The backyard is really nice as well, and very private.

Proximity to the beach (right across the street from a relatively private strip of Anini beach) is fantastic and cannot be understated. Presumably, you're thinking of renting this place for the beach and it will not disappoint - it is beautiful.. This area is especially good for younger kids (we brought along our 6, 4 and an 18 mo. old) because Anini beach has a large reef that prevents the surf from reaching the beach. Consequently, the water is both very calm (like a lake) and really shallow. The snorkeling is reasonable, lots of fish to see, but the coral isn't the prettiest.

Not really many things to complain about with this rental. As some of the other reviews have mentioned, there is no AC. There are many fans provided though. Personally, I like feeling the humidity, I'm visiting to experience that climate in full.

To summarize: This is an amazing place.

Mark S. May 2019
The Hale was clean and everything was as stated. Quiet and peaceful, Little road traffic on week days, Right across the road from Anini beach with magnificent views and shady trees. The beach was uncrowded and wonderful. Great Views of Kilauea Pt light and fantastic sunsets.
Fresh fish every night at the Blue Dolphin Market in Hanalei.
Big Tim's Burger at the Hanalei Gourmet is the Bomb, when washed down with cold Mai Tais.
We would definitely stay there again.

Power was off for two nights we were there and wasn't restored till the next day, but that was on KUIC not the owners. Internet was also spotty and didn't work consistently, So if you must work, have internet etc, need Netflix to survive.., you may want to check first.

We loved Anini Ohana Hale! The house is beautifully decorated and comfortable. The beds were very comfy! We loved the “shower with a view”! It was a treat! The beach access was great too! Far enough away from the public access to keep it quiet and uncrowded. We loved snorkeling with the turtles! And loved being able to sit in the shade with your toes in the water!
I do have to admit that I missed AC....I know most houses don’t have it and it’s very expensive. The house did get hot in the afternoon if the winds were light and the sun was out. But all in all this house was great and had everything we needed! We grilled a great dinner one night and made breakfast every morning. Anini is special!
I would definitely come back if I’m lucky enough to do so.
Thank you!!!
Manager response:
Thank you for sharing your feedback, Lori! We're so glad you enjoyed a stay at this lovely ocean view cottage. Each room provides a ceiling fan to promote a fresh ocean breeze throughout the home, for a little extra cooling off after a long day of fun. We would love to host you again for another great vacation experience!

We just spend one week in the beautiful Anini Ohana Hale and we had an amazing time. Our family of four loved the light, airy, and spacious house. The house had everything you could possible need, from a super well equipped kitchen, laundry essentials, books and puzzles to all the beach equipment (beach buggy, sand toys, snorkeling masks, beach chair etc) - everything was there. The house has a beautiful backyard with a seating corner and a BBQ, so we often ate outside. But the best for us was the location directly opposite of beautiful Anini beach, we walked over to the beach several times a day, it's perfect for kids and very quiet. There are many trees to sit under in the shade, the beach is perfect for snorkeling or just playing in the water. Most of the times it felt like our private beach. We miss it a lot already. All in all it was a wonderful and special holiday in Kauai - thank you for sharing this beautiful house, we'd come back any time!

Great location. More spacious than I expected. We had an issue with wifi on the first day but the hosts sorted out.

Home layout was spacious and offered privacy for all guests. Nice size kitchen and living for communal spaces. We played games on the low coffee table and ate ice cream sandwiches on the deck. It was a lovely week. Road noise is minimal, and beach felt private even with a public beach park down the road.
Gregory B. Dec 2018
Quiet, close to the beach, clean and homey.
Shawna M. Oct 2018
We love Anini Beach so this location was perfect for us. The beach was right across the street and far enough away from the main parking lot that we practically had the beach to ourselves most days. This beach was perfect for our young kids because it is calm and really easy to snorkel. The house itself is very nice and the beds were comfortable. The house had every amenity we needed (and more) and it was such a pleasure to have beach gear, toys, a large washer and dryer. We also loved that we could use the gas grill outside. We were okay with no A/C but if we were to stay again we may look for a place with A/C just because having the windows open let in so many bugs and geckos. All the windows/doors are screened, but the bugs and geckos still manage to find their way in. We had an issue with a lot of bees in the master bath (which felt like an outdoor toilet/shower), but the property mgmt was quick to address the problem. Something to note is that this is a small house behind a larger house. We were lucky there were no guests in the front house during our stay, but I can imagine the noise could be an issue if everyone has their windows open and/or people are talking outside. The internet was ok, a little slow to stream off of devices, but it was nice to have the option of Apple TV.

This rental is ideally located in the middle of the surf and beach hotspot Haleiwa—close to all kinds of restaurants ( especially close is the must-try bakery/sandwich shop, Waialua Bakery & Juice Bar, right next to the grocery store, and not very far from the beach—but at the same time, it is secluded, guiet and peaceful. Air conditioning was very welcome since it has been unusually hot (90+ in late Sept.). Many Hawaiian homes do not even have this comfortable perk! The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking dinner ‘at home’ or just making coffee and cereal. Beds are comfortable, and bedrooms quite large. Our only complaint is since it is tucked away, it is somewhat to find and the directions need updating. It was definitely worth this small annoyance and we very happily enjoyed our four nights here!

House's location to beach & remote but not.

Having a wonderful time. The home we are staying in is well appointed, equipped and has the things that let's us focus on our time on Kauai, not worry about the little things that can make a memorable trip not so memorable.
