Perched atop a high dune overlooking Avon’s south beach is beautiful oceanfront Mare Vista. With five floors, it is the tallest house in Avon!

The ground level has a single carport, storage room, outdoor shower, and fish cleaning area. Move to the oceanfront backyard with a furnished pool deck, covered outdoor bar, hot tub, and a beautifully custom-made, half-moon infinity concrete pool). From the pool deck, there is a path for easy access to the beach, just over the dune. Full-view glass doors lead to the spacious game room with a pool table, game table, TV, and wet bar with a fridge and dishwasher and access to the deck with a hot tub.

Across the hall is the theater room with a 65-inch TV, surround sound, and seating. Move up the stairs with handcrafted stained-glass window accents to the second level. The third main living area is fully furnished and has a 45-inch TV. The kitchen offers granite countertops and a nearby dining area.

Head up to the fourth level with a separate seating area with grand sound views. Level five houses an office area with two desks and a workstation, along with a bedroom with the highest skylight in Avon.

Three of the four main suites are oceanfront, two have deck access, and three have a sofa/seating area and a private bath. One of the guest bedrooms is also oceanfront.

A private washer/dryer is provided for your convenience.

This house fell far below expectations set by Vacasa’s listing. I’ve been coming to Hatteras for thirty years and this was an unusually bad experience. I think it’s due to Vacasa’s total lack of understanding of the area, poor property oversight, and indifferent-to-infuriating customer service.

The home is quite run down; several screen doors and locks are broken. At one point, the water shut off completely. The kitchen sink drains slowly and we had to request a repair on a shower that didn’t drain at all.

The house was stuffy and mildew-scented and many windows had mechanisms removed to prevent opening them, so we all spent the week sneezing. We saw an unusual amount of roaches—something I’ve never experienced on Hatteras on past visits.

The rooms were ok, but it’s important to know that the third floor main bedroom is not private. It has a large skylight that anyone on the deck can look into, and there’s a strange stained glass panel set in the wall between the kitchen/dining area and the bedroom. It seems opaque but anyone walking up or down the stairs can see through it easily.

The pool is not heated, which is typical for the summer in Hatteras and usually no problem. However, it gets almost no sun throughout the day so it is frigid and mostly unusable.

The hot tub is over-treated with chemicals that left blue specks on our skin.

The decks are in dangerously poor repair, with wobbly railings and broken chairs and benches.

The kitchen is lacking some basics, like measuring cups and spoons. We bought and left oven mitts, wine openers, and other sundries, so hopefully the next guests will have a better experience.

Vacasa was hard to deal with. I did NOT get a notification when the house was ready for us. I had to call Vacasa to fix multiple problems and it never encountered anyone who could give me clear answers or timelines— they just told me they would “put in a ticket with the local crew.” I was impressed with how quickly and easily the local maintenance people helped us; that was the one bright spot.

It’s a shame that Vacasa has purchased Hatteras Realty and some other small realty businesses and seems to have a stranglehold on the area. Because they are not based locally, more houses are sure to fall into disrepair and other guests will have problems that the remote call center won’t be able to handle. I’ll miss working with the quickly disappearing local real estate companies, even though they can also be frustrating—at least I know they’re familiar with the houses and the problems that inevitably pop up with rentals. I will go out of my way to avoid Vacasa listings—but that’s getting harder to do.

The location is great,the pool is great and the house is "beachy" great. I loved it so much,I've taken the 10 hour drive from Ct. twice.

This was our third time at Mare Vista. This house is like home to us! The few issues we had were minor and were taken care of quickly. We're sad that it's already booked for next year!

Our family loved the Oceanfront. Our first time getting an OF home. Will spoil us totally. We had lots of issues with some things about the house. My sisterinlaw's foot was hit due to the Dishwasher door hinges are broken and it fell down ontop of her foot but she was ok. The door weighs a ton, that dishwasher needs to go and it didn't clean all the dishes all the time. The Fridge was too small for first floor (not sure how to
make room for a bigger one and Icemaker was broken but Hatteras called me to inform me of this. So we bought Ice. We had no can opener and saw they had one in online pictures. I go by alot of pictures in choosing a home to rent and what to bring. We went out and bought 3 manual which we left for next renters. We had some water issues, sometimes there was no pressure at all. Toilets need replaced. The half bath next to theater room would not stop running. Overall some housekeeping should be better. Noticed some things that aren't getting cleaned. I was told they were short handed for cleaning help. One important item, the dryer vent that is out at back deck next to outside shower (along that hallway to entry door) the Vent needs cleaned out. The dryer may work better if this gets done. We are a easy going family...this may sound like a bad review but it is not. We would love to come back to this house. It totally worked for our family. I can't wait to see what the new owners do to renovate this home...especially new beds. Due to Covid and how hard it is to get my family together, not sure how soon we will need a house this big. We loved Mar Vista. It was so private and wonderfully Ocean front. I would recommend this house. Oh, one more thing...usually find a book that sits on coffee table to explain some things about the house but we didn't see one. For examle, we were not sure if the pool needed anything done to it or the hot tub needed to be at what temperature. That books that I have always seen from owners give us alot of info. Again, hope to come back to Mar Vista soon. Glad the new owners kept it for Renting. thanks again for everything!!

Maintenance is taking care of the dishwasher; unfortunately, we cannot fix the ice maker since the needed parts are no longer in production. We are hopeful to have a new fridge in place by the end of the year that will provide more space and have an ice maker as well. The new homeowner also plans to replace the toilets. A new can opener will be added, the dryer vent has been cleaned out, and our guest 'books' are provided online. Thank you!

We stayed in this house 10 years ago at which time it was pristine. So when it became available this year we decided on a week in June. Upon check in we were pretty sure it was not cleaned. Bathrooms, kitchen, carpets were very dirty. We spent our first two days cleaning. This house has such big comfy bedrooms and the most fantastic views but the condition of the house and the maintenance issues that were not addressed during our stay was very disappointing. We have been renting houses on Cape Hatteras since 1988 and this house was, hands down, in the worst condition of any we have reserved.

Staying at Mare Vista was an overall good experience but the house needs some pretty serious attention. The handrails on all balconies and stairs were not securely nailed down. We vacationed with older folks, one who had both knees and a hip replaced, and also with children which made sitting on the balcony and walking up the stairs pretty scary. No outlets worked outside so sitting by the pool we had to use extension cords which surely isn’t safe. All of the toilets in the house will clog with one piece of toilet paper. Terrible flushing which was a headache all week long. The sliding doors on the balconies do not close which made it hot in our rooms every day. The pool was beautiful but the lights didn’t work at night, nor did the majority of the deck lights by the pool which, again with older folks and children, not having a lit pathway wasn’t very pleasing. Lastly, the access pathway to the beach (the stairs) need to be fixed before someone gets very hurt. You could only walk on one side because the other is going to fall off any day. It seems like it’s shared with 3 homes so the owners need to get together pretty quick. Overall an enjoyable vacation but the house is run down to say the least. And it was filthy when we got there. I did a pretty good clean as soon as we arrived which wasn’t a great start to my vacation. Please get to this house and give it some attention because it has great potential. Thanks!

We have stayed at this property before, but it has changed owners and management company. The precleaning was poor, and there is trash in the the yard. Minor maintenance such as door handles and light fixtures need to be replaced.

Since then they have replaced all the ceiling fans, most of the lamps, painted the interior, and are looking at renovating the bathrooms.
