Beachfront home on the river w/ private beach & stunning interior!
Stunningly sited on the Washington side of the Columbia River, Riverglen offers more fun and relaxation than you can shake a kiteboard at! One of the only waterfront homes within the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, Riverglen has more than 200 feet of shoreline with two rocky sand beaches, the larger of which is a perfect launch site for windsurfing and kiteboarding [but please no motorized sports], and you can avoid those Hood River crowds! Out of all the Columbia Gorge vacation rentals you could choose, Riverglen has the only beachfront location!
You approach this home down a quarter-mile long lane that winds through tall firs and cedars. At the end of the lane is a parking area which is separated from the home by railroad tracks. (Because there are no nearby crossings, passing trains do not sound their horns, and a thick grove of trees helps make the sound barely noticeable)
A custom-built, steel footbridge will carry you over the tracks, and carts are kept at the parking area to help carry your things. Note: The bridge is wide, very safe and easy to negotiate, but the slope may challenge those with limited strength or breath (see photos).
From either entrance off the wraparound porch, beautiful hardwood floors lead you through the house and compliment the massive beams, creating a warm, inviting feel. Kick off your shoes and relax! Riverglen is shoe-free, so bring slippers, or use the guest slippers you'll find near the front door.
Wherever you look, you'll enjoy the owners' impressive collection of decorative fiber arts and beautifully carved pieces brought back from their travels doing international disaster relief work.
The Greatroom's wraparound windows let you enjoy a 180-degree River view, and the stone, wood-burning fireplace will welcome you back from your day's adventures. Cushy leather sofa and overstuffed chairs will lure you, but you may want to have a game of cards or dominoes before you settle in.
Opposite the Greatroom, you will find a complete cook's kitchen (with downdraft ceramic cooktop, wall oven, stainless double door fridge, disposal, and dishwasher) where you'll be inspired to cook to your heart's (and stomach's) content. An eating bar separates the kitchen from the dining area which seats six (though with its two extra leaves, you could comfortably seat up to 10). There's even an iPod docking stereo/radio -- the owners thought of everything.
The main floor Master Suite offers a comfortable queen bed and has a walk-in closet. Its full bath is tiled in slate and has an inviting tub with shower, double sinks, and a picture window. Washer and dryer are just across the hall, along with outdoor cushions and beach towels.
Head upstairs to the large, welcoming Sitting Room where you'll find a nice selection of games and some cozy spots to curl up and read or catch a nap. You'll find a new, 32"-inch HDTV and a DVD player, but the trees prevent us from having satellite TV. Please note that there is currently no internet provided at this home so take the opportunity to unplug and relax.
A cozy bedroom down the hall has a full bed and French doors that open onto a private, River-view balcony.
These bedrooms share an elegant, slate-tiled bath with walk-in shower and deep, step-up soaking tub. The picture window here offers a lovely western view of the Gorge with sunsets that turn the River crimson.
But you won't want to just LOOK at the view -- get out in it!! Just out the back door to the left, a private beach just steps away (it's rocky, so water shoes or sneakers are a must). To the right is a path that leads to a little cove with a small beach, and in between are gorgeous rocky outcroppings. The bigger beach has straight, unobstructed access to the river -- great for launching your kiteboard or whatever else you fly on! You'll be a few miles west of the crowds that choose Hood River vacation rentals and enjoy the same famous, spectacular Gorge winds. [Note - motorized watercraft are not allowed at this property.]
Of course, the view to the cliffs across the river might distract you, so go ahead and let the magic of this place take over! Roam the wooded, 6-acre grounds, but watch out for poison oak (info in the house notes).
If you venture off the property, the town of Stevenson is less than 2 miles east, and the road to Carson (and on to the woodlands and waterfalls of the vast Gifford Pinchot National Forest) is at the flashing light. Or head east to the Hood River bridge for all the sights on the Oregon side of the River, or go on out to Eastern Washington's celebrated wine country! The Columbia Gorge Appellation is one of 15 different regions, all producing award-winning wines, and supporting an active and growing group of outstanding wineries.
Before you get there, stop off at Maryhill! This turn-of-the-twentieth-century mansion holds several interesting collections in its museum and is also the site of Maryhill Winery. Its location on top of a high bluff gives it jaw-dropping views in all directions - take lots of pictures!
Whatever you do, you'll want to be back in time for the glorious sunset - toast your day and plan tomorrow's adventures. There's so much to do in the area, it won't be an easy choice - but you can't go wrong at Riverglen; it's a little slice of heaven!
Please note that this vacation rental DOES NOT allow events at all!
This is a beautiful house on a very special parcel of land on the Columbia River. There is access to the river in several spots, and all of them are lovely. We enjoyed just hanging out!
That said, the house is a beautiful Arts & Crafts house with very nice furnishings. The kitchen has many amenities.
The train was not a bother - and in fact being near the tracks is inevitable if you are near the river. There is no whistle....it is a low rumble.
My only suggestions for improvement are a new mattress for the master bed and some window coverings for the rooms upstairs. That said, this is the nicest rental house I've stayed in. And we have stayed in VRBO and other rentals throughout the world, the Caribbean, and the Northwest. Highly recommend this property.
Wonderful stay with our family. Great house, Extraordinary views!
Second time renting this house, returned because we loved it. This time we experienced more than the Columbia, Eagles have claimed this territory as their own, saw them every day, plus an occasional deer or two.
Love the beauty of the Gorge
Love the protected waterfront beach
Love the well maintained home
Love the tranquility
Love the quick drive from Portland
The place where this house sits is right on the the Columbia River Gorge. You’re tucked in under some trees but you can walk right out to a little rocky shore or sit on large rocks with a 180 plus view of the river. Truly awe inspiring. The house was very clean and well appointed, tastefully decorated and comfortable. This was the second time we’ve rented this home and intend on returning again.
We absolutely loved our stay. The property is inspiring and rejuvenating and the trains didn’t intrude. There are plenty of things to do nearby. A return trip to Riverglen, for more fun adventures, is definitely in our future.
Incredible location and a beautifully finished cabin. Very private and secluded. Would stay again.
It was so very worth having to carry everything to the house from parking across the tracks. What a beautiful home and so very well done. The view and property is phoenominal...
This is the fourth time I have stayed in this home, this time was as perfect as the rest. This home is beautiful and there isn't a better view I have found in any other vacation home. It's clean, well stocked kitchen. No internet which is a pro, but can be a con depending on your goals for the trip away.
Only downfall this time was the heat was actually not working but I had a quick response from the team and the issue was resolved very fast. The fireplace is always wonderful, but a quick note that the blower won't actually turn on for quite a while, it says 15 minutes in the notes for the home but it's more like an hour.
Few notes for Vacasa - Oven and hair dryer were not working. And there was little cleaning required near the Sofas. It’s definitely a thing vacasa need to care for since they charge quite a amount for cleaning
We appreciate this guest taking the time to provide this feedback. Our local management team will replace the hairdryer and will schedule maintenance for the oven. We look forward to hosting this guest again soon.
Stayed here for daughter's wedding. Handy to the venue and Stevenson. House is beautiful as are the grounds. Vacasa very responsive to requests. We'll be back!
We love everything about this home. This visit was our fourth time. We hope to have a special get away weekend here every summer.
Very enjoyable weekend with our two boys, ages 10 and 12. They loved the nearby trains and the private beach. The spent hours exploring the property and shore, collecting rocks and driftwood. For dinner, we grilled on the deck overlooking the river. And for dessert, we made smores over the beachside fire pit -- a real treat. We've stayed in dozens of homes and this one was truly special. I do want to underscore a couple of comments from other reviewers that, in our minds, don't detract from the overall experience but must be well understood: the overpass walkway could be quite a challenge for older guests or those out of shape. The trains add interest to the property but they can be loud at times and they do run at night (we were awakened on a couple of occasions). And we were puzzled by the decision to place a full size bed in a rental property, all but insuring a couple can't rest comfortably in the second bedroom (however the master has a queen; there are also 2 twins). All that said, this home feels very special and quite reasonably priced given the waterfront, secluded location and the beauty of the home. We will definitely return at some point in the near future.
The outdoor fire pit by the river was amazing.
Beautiful, relaxing spot on the banks of the Columbia gorge. Big, comfortable home with lots of room for gathering together and plenty of room for alone time. Very dog friendly location. My dog did have fear of the metal bridge when we first got there, but went right over it on the way out. Would happily stay here again.
This house is simply amazing. We stayed with 4 adults, 2 children and 1 dog and there was plenty of space for us. The rooms are clean, spacious and charming. The upstairs bath has an amazing soaking tub to rest and relax in after a day of exploring this incredible area. Out the back door, you can direct access to the river and a private beach. In the summer you can even picnic out on the tables or build a campfire in the fire pit. This house is supplied generously with everything you need, extra towels, toiletries, laundry, everything! The views are spectacular from the living room, the fireplace makes the home cozy, and the kitchen has all the supplies you need to cook up any kind of meal. There are several TVs and DVD players throughout the house, but no cable or WIFI. This was no issue. There was great cell phone coverage so you're still connected, but it's not really needed. The beauty of the surrounding area provides so much to do. There are lakes nearby to fish in, Beacon Rock State Park is worth a visit and a hike up to the top of, and there are wineries nearby to try! The town of Stevenson is a very short drive away and has a store and some restaurants. The cars have to be parked a bit away across from the train tracks, but the foot bridge is very easy to use and the noise from the trains never bothered us. This place is absolutely amazing for a quiet, cozy, secluded getaway to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty and relax! We will be back!
Great location, beautiful home, peaceful, I could not have asked for a better mini break. Yes there is a train, but the home is well insulated, you really don't hear it much and by night two, no bother at all. The house is perfect for a group of friends or a family. There is plenty of space for everyone and it is very well equipped in the kitchen. Loved the higher end cooking equipment. There is plenty to do just minutes down the road: hiking, skiing, shopping, breweries, distilleries, wineries, fishing, wind surfing, kite surfing. You love the outdoors this is the place. They don't call it Wind River for nothing! The wind will blow HARD! but I loved that about the location. It was also great just imagining what it must have been like when Lewis and Clark saw this area for the first time. The amazing beauty, wildlife, and peacefulness of the Columbia River Gorge.
We love the house and they creative way it is located. We love the surroundings, the serenity and quiet, and the beautiful views from every window.
I was a little concerned it was so close to the railroad tracks, but suspected the price was lower because of that. Turns out, it was not much of a worry. The driveway, bridge over the tracks and trail to house are steep with suddenly large rocks jutting bordering the path. Tricky is a good word. It's lit, but not enough.
The house is superior. The beds are typical (not great, but not impossible to sleep on). Everyone in our 5 person party just raved over the place and we had a wonderful gorge weekend, particularly taking the Fruit Loop in Hood River!!
What a great stay we had! The house is beautiful and so well care for. We watched the sunset every night from the rocky outcropping on the river and also had a spectacular view of the full moon rising over the foothills. We were also treated to a family of deer walking across the property one morning.
The layout of the house was perfect for us. There are actually two living areas and two very nice bathrooms. The upstairs bathroom has a sunken tub with a huge picture window looking out over the woods.
The kitchen was better stocked than our own home. High quality cookware and dinnerware and top of the line appliances.
My husband's favorite part was the bridge over the railroad tracks which allowed him to watch numerous trains during our stay. What a unique experience to feel and hear the trains rumble right underneath you. However, the sound was very muffled inside the house, so it was never disruptive.
We're already planning our next trip and can't wait to return.
My wife and I have rented houses in the Columbia Gorge several times in years past, and Riverglen on the Columbia was the best by far.
This house has everything you need to "relax and get away from it all" but still be close to activities. The owners have done an exceptional job with both the design of the home as well as the furnishings. Everything is pristine and the decor is stunning. Each room is beautifully designed from the furniture, to the colors on the walls, to the art pieces from around the world, . From the deck, you have a great view of the Columbia River and the tree covered hills on the Oregon side of the river.
My family rented the house for a mini reunion. We hiked the trails around the property and private beach, paddled rafts in the river, watched sunsets from the deck, played bocce ball outside and board games inside, read, visited and cooked wonderful meals in the well equipped kitchen. In addition to the fireplace, there was also an outdoor fire pit with carefully set kindling and wood stacked nearby. There were even roasting sticks for marshmallows. The upstairs bathroom even included a stunning view from the large soaking tub and the walk-in shower.
My only regret is that our stay wasn't longer. We will definitely rent this home again. VACASA always does a wonderful job choosing the properties to manage, but this house was above and beyond what we expected.
life doesn't get much better than this. We will be back.
Great place! Secluded but easy access. Beautiful home. Right next to water. A bit breezy.
The home at 47742 SR 14 is beautiful and wonderfully accommodates a multi-generational family with swimming, hiking, fishing, lounging on the patio, and fireside chats. I look forward to our next visit and would highly recommend this home for friends visiting the area.
Our small team came for a week to paddle on the Columbia River Gorge. This house was prefect for it. We were able to paddle out right from the house. Everyone loved the views, the beautifully constructed house and the privacy. The bonfire was probably the most used amenity. Great for sitting around and talking story. Plenty of room for the group to work and hang out inside. The only drawback would be no wifi, but we used it as an opportunity to disconnect a bit. The cell service was pretty good at the house. The walk over the bridge did get a bit old after a week or so, but worth it to be on the water. We loved that is was dog friendly and the property is perfect for dogs that love the outdoors. It was really hard for the dogs to walk on the bridge though so we had to carry them across each time. Overall we had a wonderful stay and would definitely stay here again. The Vacasa team was so friendly and helpful. Thank you!
This is a truly awesome place from which to explore the Columbia Gorge . We'll be back. Great, quality built home, uniquely on the river.
Our four nights at Riverglen were simply perfect--a completely enchanting summer location where spent many hours in the water in the protected cove, at the fire pit cooking s'mores and hot dogs, and on the upstairs balcony just taking in the beautiful view. The walkway structure over the railroad tracks was completely unique and provided a wonderful perspective for watching the trains go by underneath you (trains were very frequent, but not intrusive at all).
We love everything about this rental!
My family and I had a wonderful stay. The home was absolutely beautiful and the small private beach was the highlight of our stay. Perfect for people who want a little privacy to relax while visiting the gorge.
We stayed here with some of our wedding party when we were getting married at the lodge! The house is amazing and the views are out of this world. We didn't get to do much but sleep and get ready there as weddings are time consuming, however it was close to town, convenient, and we would absolutely go back!
The house was amazing - the location made it out of this world! You just can't beat the views. The big windows in the gathering rooms made it the best, plus the wrap-around porch. The house is very solid and so that kept noises at bay. The train did not bother us at all. It was wonderful and we would come again!
Great house! Wouldn't recommended it for anyone that is too out of shape because that trek to and from the parking area is a doozie!!! The ramp is dark so you need a flashlight and it can be slick at night. This would be great for anyone looking for a fishing cabin. Loved the wrap around deck!!!
Such a beautiful home and location! Will definitely return.
Took my kids and mom here for spring break. All I can say is wow!!! This is one of the best places I've ever stayed at. The view was out of this world, place was clean and amazing. Had a couple aunts, uncles and brother stop by and they were all amazed! Didn't ever see the owner but his car was there. Every morning I'd go out back and sit in a three wall rock spot to view the mountains and water. Cant wait to get back and experience again. This is a great place if you want to get out and hike, see of the path stuff but about an hour outside downtown. Looking to get away and recharge, you won't find a better spot! The photos don't do this place justice and you'll be shocked driving down the dirt road and pulling up to the bridge. If you're reading this, just booked it....trust me.
If you are planning to travel to the Gorge and looking to be a bit "away from it all," then this home is for you. It was clean and spacious, with all the amenities you might want (and hopefully they'll fix the fireplace soon so that is really true--our one gripe was the insert had gone missing so we couldn't use it). The beaches are a great place to go hang out, as are the bluffs, and all are mere footsteps from your door. Stunning sunrises, gorgeous afternoons, and an easy drive in to Stevenson for grocery store, restaurants, etc. We'll be back, for sure!
We really enjoyed staying at riverglen. It was beautiful and serene.
I often like to stay somewhere new when going for a long weekend but this is a house that I would come back to over and over. Best.
Beautiful and clean home and surrounding area. Would stay there again. Bring your own staple items for the kitchen other than salt and pepper (foil, plastic wrap, spices, olive oil).
We fell in love with this area due to this outstanding cabin! So much so that we came back here for this visit to get married at Falls Creek Falls in Carson! It is idyllic to be away from the massive amount of people that we deal with in Colorado. Thank you for allowing us to have some amazing times here :)
Thanks for an amazing experience! What an awesome place
Had a most wonderful 2 night stay with family. Well stocked house, good directions...they are correct, don't use GPS....written given directions were perfect! No problem transporting our items over bridge. Train was not an issue unless you had windows open at night (we closed them) and standing on bridge when train went under a bit unnerving, so just time it if you can....
So enjoyed out time.....and would recommend this home:)
Lovely home. Gorgeous secluded location.
The perfect jumping off point for hiking. Stevenson was lovely compared to busy mt hood. Husbands and kids will love the train. We exchanged our car rental Hyundai Elantra for a small SUV which handled the gravel road and turn off much better. Love the craftsman furniture.
We would highly recommend this property and would return when possible. The views were absolutely outstanding. The home was well kept, clean, and cozy with a warm family feeling. The amenities were plentiful. The fire pit was an excellent family gathering area and, thank you, for supplying the firewood! The train was not a factor as the whistle never blowed and the sound was minimal and soothing. The lack of internet/wifi was not an issue as anticipated and a welcome change to do without. However, for the few times we had to check in on work, technology provided a way (via our cell phones) and we were able to work. TVs were provided; however, we never turned them on except for movies for the younger kids to enjoy. This was very refreshing as we were able to enjoy a week of family time. This was, by far, the best property we enjoyed in all our years of traveling; it lacked nothing.
I have given a lot of thought about this review as there were so many positives about this property; however, one vacations usually to destress from reality, recoup sleep and return rested, relaxed and ready to face the daily challenges of life until the next vacation. I have read (and agree) that quality of sleep, comfort of bedding and quality of lightening are very high on the list for travelers and for us, that is certainly the case. Internet worked great from our cell phone hot spot and we consistently had great service from most all areas of the home.
All that said, I will address the positives of this property. WOW....what a place to unwind. The home and setting is outstanding. The view from all windows, proximity to the water and privacy are to die for. The living room furniture is very comfortable and there was plenty of seating on the wrap around porch. The fire pit near the stone beach was perfectly placed to be protected from the wind and provided nightly entertainment! The house is laid out well and well stocked. From the upstairs bedrooms/bathroom, it is like being in a tree house and very enchanting. The steel bridge across the RR tracks is unusual and never a problem for the various ages in our party. Also, while one is aware of the passing of the train, it is muffled by trees and rock on the track level and not a problem at all. Please note there is a caretaker cottage very close to the main house, yet worlds away. The caretaker is very respectful and we never saw him during out stay. All these positives could easily make this home 6 stars!!!
However, I am a bed/bedding snob. I work very, very hard for a living and therefore, I place a huge value on quality of the bedding including pillows, linen, blankets, spreads, etc including extra pillows and blankets, contributing to quality of sleep while on vacation. This was sorely lacking and due to the poor quality of mattresses, my sleep and that of our party was poor at best. Also, lightening was a challenge, especially for these older eyes. A breakdown of concerns is as follows:
Master queen bed, first floor very uncomfortable. Poor lighting, some wall switches and lamps did not work
Double bed upstairs - marginally comfortable. Way too small for a couple to comfortably sleep well together
Day beds - marginally comfortable. One on the right less comfortable that the one on the left.
In general, lighting was poor and it was a challenge to figure how IF they worked or HOW they worked.
So, all this being said, would I recommend this property to friends? YES, but with full disclosure. Would I be back? Big hesitation as I definitely want to, BUT will think twice before booking due to sleep issues. If bedding and lightening is resolved, it will be a no brainer and we could be back regularly as our son lives in the area.
We had a relaxing three days in a remote chalet on the Columbia river that made the stress of the previous months melt away.
One of the most comfortable, relaxing, and gorgeous rental experiences we've ever had. Loved the house, inside and out!
I've stayed at many vacation rentals and while I'm not giving this 5*, it was almost perfect for us.
First, I just want to say that I found the pictures a bit misleading. The pictures made it look bigger than it is. Having said that, it was great for the four of us (two couples).
The ad clearly states that the upstairs bed is a full/double. I knew that, but I guess I forgot how small a full size bed is. Just be forewarned.
The location is fantastic. Where else can you get such a nice house on the river? The seating area on the private beach is great and we loved the wraparound porch.
The property is well managed and very clean. But there is ambient noise. The tracks are very close to the house, and while we were awake, the train was charming. However, I had some trouble sleeping and hearing the train in the wee hours of the night was less charming. But it is not quiet. Noise travels over the river and you hear the hum of the interstate. So, if you're expecting a quiet time, you won't get it.
I will highly recommend this for families or groups who want privacy and a unique location.
MY group of 4 thirty-somethings came up for an outrigger canoe race and stumbled upon this gem! I was apprehensive because this property was the last one left, so I was worried something was "wrong" with it, or that we would be hugely disappointed that the reality didn't match the pictures... boy was I wrong! This place is AWESOME!!!! So cute and well appointed! The décor is simple and comfortable--- we immediately felt at home! Loved that there was no TV in the main living room--- the views were enough to keep us engaged! The beds were comfortable and the living/dining area was open and nice! It took until the second full day to make our way down to the private beach, and it is soooooooo cute! Great to lay out and skip rocks! We wanted to make smores and enjoy the outside fire pit, but ran out of time. I would not hesitate to come back to this house, and am in fact nervouse to write too good a review in fear of the place being rented the next time we are up there. LOVE THIS HOUSE!!!
Oh yeah... the train does run extremely close to the house, but it wasn't enough to wake anyone in the night... we just laughed as we heard it going by... both the muted train noises and the bridge from the parking spot over the tracks to the house ADDED TO THE unique and coolness of the property. We never saw the caretaker, but he was around during our stay--- and while his cottage is located just out the front door, it NEVER bothered us or made us feel less private. All the living areas are on the river side of the house, so you can just see the cottage down the hallway- it was a non-issue. Lastly... getting there the first time was tedious! We punched in the address on our navigation, and it DID NOT MATCH RHE REAL DIRECTIONS at all! You MUST go by the detailed directions given in the welcome packet... we had to do many turn-arounds after missing the mailbox, and it was even more confusing coming from the opposite direction. A sign, or even some other landmark would be extremely helpful.
Again, this place is awesome!!!
This was our second weekend stay here with our family. We live in Portland and like the short drive to such a beautiful location on the Columbia Gorge. We love the privacy and natural beauty this wonderful home offers.
The house was well supplied and the view from the porch is awesome. The beach is a very short walk from the house and is in a protected cove, so a great place to chill. Loved using the fire ring out there!
We stayed in the Gorge area so we could hike - it seemed like we always picked one that was a 20-30 minute drive from the house. It would've been nicer to not drive as much, but I am not sure there is a location that would have such a great view and be more convenient.
You can hear the trains go by, but it is not a big deal and certainly did not keep anybody up at night.
Let me start by saying that I spent my childhood in Skamania County and this area holds a special place in my heart. But we had to leave Washington and moved to a more city setting. Many years later, I wanted to return to my root with my husband and two boys- 5 and 8 year old. My whole family decided to take the trip with us from California back "home". My childhood home was on the Columbia River so when I found Riverglen, I thought it would be the perfect place for us. And I was right! The location is really close to Stevenson so shopping and restaurants are very convenient, but the home itself is quite rural. This is the fun of it!
To get there, you drive down a long gravel drive-way (just like my childhood home!) and arrive at a magical metal bridge that goes over the train tracks. When we first pulled up, a train was going by and the boys were thrilled with being able to stand over it as it rolled through. The house is set in a wooded area right on the river's edge. The home itself was well-appointed with Native American decor that is perfect for the area. The walls are painted red which makes it a bit dark but there is beautiful woodwork throughout the home and large picture windows with impressive views of the Cascade Mountains. In the main living space, there is a gorgeous fireplace (they supply a generous amount of kindling and wood) so we enjoyed morning fires with our coffee. During the day, the boys explored the property and truly got to experience country living. We spend the afternoons at "Pirates Cove" the private beach just yards from the house enjoying hot dogs roasted on the bonfire that overlooks the cove's beach. Evenings were either on the deck or back at the cove for s'mores. The kitchen is well-equipped with glass baking dishes, cookie sheets etc. I would agree with previous posts about the kitchen knives and did mention this in my feedback to Vacasa. The sound of the train was not disturbing to us at all but you can hear a low rumble so if you are a light sleeper, just pack some ear plugs. The master bedroom is on-suite and located ion the first floor. The two room upstairs share a great bathroom with a soaker tub that has gorgeous views of the woods and river. Make sure to enjoy a bath! The bedroom with the twin beds has the best view of the Cascades and River.
To sum it up, this property has an exclusive location and is a well appointed home. There are very few homes that are on the Columbia River and you will not be disappointed with the beauty of the property and the location. The home is beautiful as well and met all of our needs. We all agreed that this home (and its location) made the trip magical- whether it was sitting on the rocky hills of the river's edge taking in the gorgeous full moon right above the raged Cascades, relaxing on the private beach while watching the creative play unfold from my city boys taking in the freeing nature of country living, or seeing a bald eagle search the rivers edge for prey.
We are already planning our next family trip to Riverglen. I would recommend this area and this home to anyone who is wanting to relax, unwind and be in nature.
The train noise was really not an issue. The house is well insulated. It was not traveled in the later evening hours. Early morning yes. We enjoyed Breakfast at the beach. I would stay there again. I love the views and the accommodations. It is perfect for our stay.
Of all the places my husband and I have rented on vacations over the years, this was our favorite by far. It is a lovely home in a beautiful setting - in the middle of a forest, surrounded by the gorgeous Columbia River with rocks and the ultimate treat of looking across the river at the hills of Oregon. The house is supplied with anything and everything you could possibly need to live and cook there. I have never felt more relaxed. We just got home last night and am wishing I was still sitting in the great room with windows on three sides with those gorgeous views . There is so much to see and do in the area that we only saw a fraction of it. Just as they say on their website, the circular iron bridge is not for everyone - especially if you brought the amount of stuff that we did so it took several trips to load and unload but it would not detract me from staying there again and just made the experience more interesting.
This property was comfortable for our weekend getaway and we enjoyed the large comfy living area and the view.
The downsides were the lack of attention to detail that makes a trip into a memorable getaway. We were missing the fiberglass carts and hand trucks to get luggage over the railroad tracks and down to the property so we had to haul it ourselves. Light bulbs were burnt out. It got stuffy upstairs and the windows don't open. They don't have coverings on them even! The washcloths were thin and scratchy. The carpet was soiled. The scissors didn't cut; neither did the knives. Water from the shower went everywhere since the enclosure was limited. You get the idea . . .
If you have low expectations, it will all be fine. For what we were paying, I just expected so much more.
Also, I received a quote via email for the property and when we booked it within 10 days, they raised the price and would not honor the original commitment. I thought that was really poor service. I begged the "customer service" man to honor the Vacasa commitment, but he was a real jerk and refused. I would NEVER book through Vacasa again.
We are disappointed to see that this guest did not have a better experience with us. There is a large wheelbarrow provided at the home to assist guests in carrying luggage across the bridge. Light bulbs have been changed, and the knife set has been replaced. There are accordion dividers next to the windows if guests want the windows covered, and the home has central air which helps prevent/remove stuffiness.
Very private , well furnished home with beautiful art treasures. Don't be dismayed about being by the railroad tracts as the train never was a problem at all. It is a lovely setting, spacious , well equipped home. All previous suggestions in reviews seem to have been dealt with,..plenty of outdoor chairs and firewood is actually provided. Bring food with you to cook or barbecue as once you're there it's great to eat in and have a glass of wine by the fire. During the day we visited Stevenson, and enjoyed outside dining and bought fresh caught salmon to grill for dinner from the Native Americans near the Bridge of the Gods. The museum is wonderful and impressive for a small town. Also enjoyed a day trip to Hood River and a trip to the Maryhill Museum along the Washington side of the Gorge. A great place for our yearly women's group gathering!
We had a grand time exploring the Columbia River Gorge. There are so many hikes and sites to see. We need to return. It was wonderful to return after a busy day to relax at Riverglen. We were able to make some great suppers and spend the evenings with a fire and playing some games. We hope to return again, soon!
Beautiful location and home. We loved the view and the comfort of the house. Couches and chairs were great - often rental homes skimp here, which makes for sub par lounging. The lounging here was first-class! There were a few small things here and there that were off, but the comfort of the house and setting (gorgeous location on the river, no neighbors) offset anything else. We also loved the fireplace! The one thing we'd recommend is that you bring your own knifes and cookware. There aren't any good knives and the pots/pans are bordering on unusable. It would be nice if those two things were improved, but few other complaints. Would recommend to friends and would stay again!
We very much enjoyed the large picture windows on 3 sides of the house with the beautiful views of the river and surrounding woods. We visited in early March and it was cold and rainy. We made a cozy fire and watched the stormy weather, and we thought about how wonderful it would be in the summer to sit out on the decks and take in the view with a glass of wine!
We used this beautiful home as our annual sewing and quilting retreat and it was just a fabulous getaway for this. Things we look for are big beautiful open windows for natural light, a beautiful view and great kitchen and cleanliness and it well exceeded all of these needs!
Regardless of what the ad states, THERE IS NO INTERNET/WI FI at the property. We requested the ad be changed, so hopefully it has been. The home itself is beautiful and the train passing by is not as loud as we expected and was a welcome addition to the weekend. We also saw a few complaints about the caretaker house. While it is close, we had ZERO problems and never saw/heard the caretaker. There are shades that cover the front door to add privacy now. We would suggest you bring your own DVD/Blu Ray player if you intend on watching DVD downstairs. We go to a lot of VRBO properties and this was one of the better ones overall. Go to the Ape Caves and local breweries and wineries. ENJOY!
Great property off the beaten path. The view is awesome and the house has so many large windows that you get to enjoy the view at all times.
Beautiful location, we loved our stay and will definitely come back and recommend this property.
Spectacular views of the water, tug boats, sun rises and sun sets! To walk on the beach & spend time on the mossy rocks, the weekend at a beautiful craftsman style home with windows all around was fabulous! Can't wait to return in spring!
We were very impressed with the privacy and beauty of this location. Gorgeous vistas from almost every room in the house...it felt like we were tucked away in a tree house. I was somewhat skeptical that the train noise would not be an issue but it was NOT at all! Very private and lovely coves for beach time, especially in a warmer time of year. Good restaurants and local beer available in Stevenson, Carson and Hood River. Our family totally enjoyed this property. If you come and are into cooking, bring your own Chef's knife!
This is a beautifu, peaceful place.....take your shoes off and stay a while!
September was beautiful there, the weather was fantastic, the moon was spectacular shining on the river and the cool mornings were refreshing! Thanks for sharing your home! Will do this again!
Location. Location. Location. Just gorgeous.
It's a beautiful location, wonderfully decorated home but the lack of blinds upstarts bedrooms is an issue. The view is amazing but waking up to summer early sunrises at 5 am for my kids wasn't fun even with pillows over their heads. The caretaker was pleasant and stayed hidden until he needed to clean the home.
loved the home, would recommend it to anyone
two things that would make the place even better:
- screens on some of the windows air flow would be great
- some lawn furniture, beautiful yard and views, but nothing to sit in to take it all in
I’ve rented many vacation homes and this is at the top for uniqueness, setting and beauty. The Home – very nice, well maintained and clean… The setting is beauty all around large picture windows surround the home, fells like you're own private paradise. The Beach – make sure you go down there it’s a very short easy walk… The parking and short hike in… before we arrived I was concerned about were we would have to leave our car… you are off the highway down a private road and it was just fine no concerns once we arrived. The hike in… this is very subjective it really isn’t that long but what goes down must come up and if you take a ton of stuff and have to make several trips send the fit guy. My parents 78 & 79 did fine but made a point to stop and rest half way. They do provide a very small cart (broken during our trip) and wheelbarrow but it was easier to just carry everything… you go across a steel bridge/ramp above the railroad tracks that circles down to a gravel pathway taking you to the home. The Trains – yes they are right there and run day and night I took ear plugs just in case but the house is so well insulated and solidly built it was a non issue for us. The caretakers cottage – yes it is right outside the front door, this did not bother us at all, for those it may there are a couple folding screens in the master closet you can set out, non issue and definitely not a deal breaker. And lastly – poison oak… did not find any issue with this for us but recommend you check out YouTube or the web so you know how to identify it since it does grow in the woods of Oregon. Conclusion… we had a great time and would stay again, this is definitely a unique home and one I hope you can enjoy too…
This is a great property in a great location and we were really looking forward to some rest and relaxation while we were there. We were aware that there was a caretaker on the property from the information provided and understood that it was one young man who was not always there because he worked off sight. We were not prepared for how close the caretaker's cottage was to the house. It was about 20ft. from the door of the house. The house has double glass doors and the cottage had windows facing right into the house. Without blinds over the doors there was very little privacy while inside the house. After we arrived, a group of 2 adults, 4 children and a dog showed up at the caretaker's cottage. They hauled in lumber, power tools, electric cords, and wheel barrow's full of dirt. They blocked the path to the house with the wheel barrows and began building what looked like a planter a few feet from the door of the house we were in. I called the number provided to see what was going on and Vacasa said they would call them and ask them to stop. A little while later a young girl came up to the house and apologized, saying that they didn't know anyone was staying there. She said she didn't even live in the cottage but her boyfriend did. The people didn't stop working though and were giving me dirty looks while I talked to the girl. About 20 minutes later I went out to get something from our car. When they saw me come out, they finally packed up there things and left. They made us feel like we were inconveniencing them by being there. It was really strange considering we had spent over $300 a night to stay there.
The only other issue was the train. It is pretty loud and runs past the house quite frequently day and night. I could deal with the train if I didn't feel like there were people watching everything we did from the cottage 20 feet outside the glass door.
We sincerely apologize that you felt uncomfortable in this home. We will look into the possibility of getting blinds and/or curtains to help create more privacy. We hope you enjoyed the beautiful home and its great location. Thank you!
Beautiful home located on the river.
I will definitely stay here again. Seamless experience!
cabin is amazing. Tons of easy hikes around. Columbia River access on the property sets this place apart. Kids has a blast.
This house is beautifully put together and ascetically constructed. The view out of every window is like a painting. It is situated on the land to give one the best view and feel of that area.
it is a beautiful house and very comfortable, we have recommended to a lot of are friends .
This home is set up beautifully for families. There are plenty of beds, games and activities to keep all ages happy. The kitchen is stocked nicely with pantry staples. The only complaint I have is the pots and pans are not up to standard for my cooking! Everything stuck!! We stayed here because of the uniqueness of the bridge and rail traffic. It added a whole new element of adventure for my husband and 4 children. Even though the tracks run fairly close to the home, you don't hear trains inside because they are moving so fast, and never blow their horns(unless your children are encouraging them from atop the bridge!) The home has a gorgeous view of the gorge, and we never saw the caretaker, even though his home is right next to the main house. We drove the 30 minute drive to Hood River and spent the day doing the Mt. Hood Railroad, Polar Express, Andrews Pizza, Air Museum, and Fruit Loop.
What a wonderful spot! The only things I would suggest is if you plan to make a big pot of soup or stew to bring your own pot and if you are a picky cook like me bring your own butcher knife. Don't forget your epson salts for the tubs!
It was quite windy in the gorge but the house was well insulated and very cozy. I thought the train may be noisy but it is actually very quiet. I have rented many houses in the PacNW and this was maybe my favorite.
This house was in one of the most beautiful and unusual locations. Views of the river and the trains on both sides were wonderful. The house was immaculate !!. We have stayed in many VRBO's and this was probably the cleanest and best equipped. It was beautifully decorated. I would most definitely stay there again and would recommend it to my friends. GREAT PLACE
We absolutely loved staying at Riverglen. We have 3 small children and they could not have loved it more! We could spend days playing on the beach and just exploring the property. Trains do pass frequently but were not disrupting at night. Besides, my kids would race to the steel bridge to get a closer look. I was pleased with how clean the property was. The layout of the house was desirable. I like the master being on the first floor with the kids upstairs. Memories were definitely made here and we plan to come back!
House was extremely clean & well maintained. (I am very picky & have stayed at many rental homes all over the US.) The only minor complaint would be to have more outside seating to enjoy on the porch. There were only three chairs for the five of us. I would not want to bring the nice indoor furniture outside. It is obvious the owners are sharing what they like with total strangers just by seeing the very high quality decor in this house. Everything is top notch.
We really enjoyed our stay there. The views from all the windows/property is amazing. The house is gorgeous and had everything we needed! The walk from where you park your car to the house is a bit challenging so my suggestion is to pack lightly and bring only what you really need as we made many trips back and forth to the car. There is a cart with big wheels so that helps but there is only one and it isn't that big. My suggestion to the owners is to have 4 of those carts instead of one. That would mean less time spent transporting clothes/food/games/coolers up and over that ramp. Normal luggage wheels won't roll over the gravel or the metal ramp so you have to carry your stuff. Beyond that challenge, it was a wonderful place and we had a great family vacation.
My wife & I enjoyed the property quite a bit. Friends and family are jealous when we show them photos.
Pros: Lovely house & large lot that really makes you feel part of the Columbia Gorge with its spectacular scenery & wildlife. Only three miles to Stevenson with its nice restaurants and grocery. The upstairs bath with its large shower & its tub with a view of the surrounding and private woods.
Suggestions: Pave or stone the short stretch from the end of the bridge to the house (Luggage & cart tend to bog down in the rock path). Softer Bed & pillows in downstairs Master Bed. That's it.
An amazing, magical place. Beautiful beyond imagination. A little far from "civilization" if you're looking for any urban experiences, but still not too bad. Hard to imagine any place more peaceful, though, if you're looking for a place to relax, read, enjoy the views and fresh air, and/or contemplate your navel!
This is great feedback! We're so glad that your stay in this home was relaxing and enjoyable.
Our family has vacationed in a many rental homes over the years. Riverglenn just blew the top off our list of favorites by far exceeding expectations on every level.
* The house was even more lovely than the photos depict. Plus it was exceptionally well provisioned and completely SPOTLESS -- both rarities in a vacation rental.
* The setting was absolutely spectacular. The bridge across the RR tracks was a fun feature. (And no, we didn't find the train noise to be distracting/disturbing. In fact, I thought it added to the uniqueness of the experience.) On the the grounds there were lots of nooks and crannies for kids to explore, a protected beach that was great for swimming, a waterside campfire setup, and a stunning rock promontory where we spent many hours fishing, enjoying morning coffee and evening cocktails, watching eagles and osprey.
* The geographic location was ideal, too: just minutes from a variety of hiking trails, water falls, and points of historic interest.
Please convey our thanks to the owners for sharing such a lovely spot with our family and friends. We will definitely be returning to Riverglenn in the future.
Thank you for letting us know that you found the house to be more lovely that it's pictures depict. It's great that you found the home to be beyond your expectations. We love that you enjoyed the trains and exploring the grounds with the kids. Fishing, swimming, campfires, relaxing, exploring the woods and beach right at the home. You can't beat it! We hope you visit again.
We were blown away by the views from the kitchen, dining and living room - windows on all sides facing the river, but surrounded by forest to give the feeling of being protected from the wind. The house is beautifully furnished in an "indigenous aesthetic" throughout, and feels quite warm and cozy. We loved the privacy of the place as only the caretakers house was visible. The house has its own private beach and rocky outcroppings on which to venture more views of the river. The only downside was the proximity to train tracks, but all the views and home far outweigh the noise from trains.
This is by far the best place I have ever stayed. The ambiance is superb, and it was very very comfortable.
Incredible location and property. Rose and the team at Vacasa are the best. Can't wait too go back. Cheers!
