Just the perfect getaway. The house is amazing, beautiful; the weather was perfect/gorgeous; the rushing ZigZag creek/river with the fire pit and chairs on the bank just a one minute walk from the front door was unbelievably awesome. The covered deck w large 'dining' table was a lovely spot to hang out and have meals/coffee/wine (though the grill was not operational during my stay - the gas line from the propane tank was rotted/broken in half). But other than that, (and 2 encounters with garter snakes in the woods that I could have done without ;) ) - it was an absolutely beautiful stay and I look forward to returning again and again.
We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay. Lin! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We apologize for the disappointment concerning the grill, but we are happy to report it is on our maintenance agenda to further address. We look forward to hosting you for another great vacation in the future!
First of all, we want to start with the positives: This cabin and its surrounding property is undeniably charming, magical and enchanted. As you approach the property, you're greeted by a fairytale-like iron gate on the bridge to the cabin which spans over a wonderful fast-water creek. There were sweet little blown glass flower lights that lit the way on the stairs to the cabin, and, into the woods to the left, there is an amazing little mound with blown glass mushroom lights on the ground, and near the giant downed tree are fire fly lights that tripped us out ('cause we thought they were real! ;-D). There was also a little antique tub and bed frame out there if you wanted to sleep and bathe under the stars. (We felt like a leprechaun was gonna leap out in front of us at any moment. ;-D)
When we entered the house, we both thought we were walking into a children's fairy tale book. This cabin/house has such a sweet vibe with a two story wall of windows in the living room showing great views of the lush, green surroundings, a clawfoot tub in the bedroom upstairs, and good shower with an irregular, rock-lined floor (which, if you're not careful, you could stumble or stub your toe on). There was an excellent, high-quality Viking stove/oven in the kitchen and a Weber grill next to an antique large table outside on the covered patio.
It was so great to get away from Portland and just bask in the peace and quiet (except for the meditative rushing water sounds of the creek). No cellphones, no internet, no TV or radio (which encouraged me to read for a change :-).
Now for the not-so-good aspects:
Unless you like sleeping on rock-hard surfaces, you'd better bring thick foam toppers to put on the beds. All three beds were one step away from sleeping on planks of wood. The beds were horrible. Both my wife and I had 2 tough nights trying to get proper sleep, and I woke up each morning with lower back pain. (Something I never experience unless I try to sleep on a bad mattress.) The other thing was the heat situation: The heating/AC rheostat unit located to the right of the fireplace didn't work, so we had to rely on the old electric heaters in the wall and the portable ones they provided. This wasn't working great as some of the heaters wouldn't stay on, even when turned all the way up. Firewood was not provided, and the general store didn't have any either, so we had to buy some starter logs and use the nearly waterlogged wood in the pile next to the bridge. I was finally able to get a fire going which, given the heater situation, was the only effective way to heat the cabin. (So bring lots of DRY firewood if you want heat.)
My wife and I would love to stay again in this cabin/house, however the only thing deterring us is the bedding situation. I really hope the owner seriously considers tossing all three of those torturous old beds and replaces them with new, comfortable ones. If they did this we would rebook another getaway to this delightful "Stuga" in a heartbeat.
Hi, Christopher! We are so glad you enjoyed the magical feel to this beautiful home. The floor heat was turned off years ago due to cost, so the portable and LED heaters are the main sources. Thank you for staying with us!
The river, woods, moss and tranquility
I loved everything and Hong. It starts with the entrance over the iron bridge with a rushing creek below. We brought food and beverages with us. There was a nice cart to but things in which helped tremendously. Then you go in the house and is gorgeous and simple. Beds were very comfortable. I loved the claw tub I the upstairs bedroom. Soak and look out the window. There is a chandelier in the forest garden. Swiss theme was endearing. I want to visit again....I loved no internet!
Adorable, cozy house and gorgeous grounds. Very secluded and relaxing. Close to Mt Hood activities.
This unique cozy cottage is the perfect place to disconnect from everything. It was raining when we got there but it snowed during the night and we woke up to a beautiful white wonderland. Don’t forget to pick up some wood at the store for a warm fire.
The Stuga was a refreshing & relaxing getaway. No wifi or cell service was a welcomed escape.
The Swedish Stuga was everything we hoped for and more! It was exactly as pictured - peaceful inside, magical outside. Being 'off the grid' for a week was just what we needed. We look forward to coming back in the future!
This home is exactly as pictured . Except you really don’t grasp the Uniqueness until you open the iron gate to a spectacular entrance. Get ready to explore , relax , unplug . We will be returning !
This home and property are something very special ❣️
The perfect house. We always love it here
Secluded cabin off the grid. Lovely space. Amazing scenery and soothing sounds of rushing stream. Comfortable and cozy. Don’t bring any heavy luggage- too hard to lug down the road across the bridge and up the stone stairs. Would definitely go again.
This lovely home has an amazing setting, complete with an outdoor bed frame, lighted chandelier (outside) and magical glass flower and mushroom lights. The bed is super comfortable and the sound of the creek as you doze off is heavenly.
This was a fantastic place to spend a romantic weekend secluded and tucked away in lush green forest. We had a wonderful time sitting by the fire and soaking in the claw foot tub and everything had been provided even the firewood! The only disappointment was that the “hot tub/hot spring” was not functioning so we missed out on a hot soak outside. Still very wonderful and we would highly recommend this to anyone!
Hi Chris, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay! This home does not come equipped with a hot tub/hot spring as a featured amenity. We look forward to hosting you again!
Great place to get away from it all and be with nature. Thanks!
WOW! We loved the Swedish Stuga!!! We love the outdoors and remote locations. If you’re like this too, you’ll love this place!!! It was snowing heavily when we arrived, but the roads were plowed and easily passable. The walk into the property was awesome...down a snowy road and across an iron bridge. It was evening, and the outdoor “mushroom” lights poking through the snow and outdoor chandelier offered a magical touch. The cabin itself was perfect!!! Decorated with an old-fashioned Swedish flair (taken right out of the Swedish decorating book in the living room we flipped through), reclaimed items, and touches of class throughout, it felt like something out of a movie. The “footie” bathtub in the bedroom was phenomenal!!! Roomie with outdoor views. It backed up to the Mt. Hood National Forest, and we spent three days exploring on snowshoes. We’ll be back, and we have friends chomping at the bit to rent it too. Don’t miss out!!!
The cabin is very secluded, wonderful decorated and had everything we needed for our stay.
The stuga is a delightful place to unplug.
It was such a gift to be able to spend time on this property in the sweet simple house. Perfect if you want solitude and comfortable place to relax outdoors.
Everything was wonderful. What a magical house!
This place was everything we had hoped - quite, beautiful, clean, and private. If you are looking for an escape from the city and to be surrounded by Oregon's most beautiful forest, this is the spot. We will surely be back,.
The forest and river are magical. We spent most of our time at the Stuga walking the forest paths and watching the river flow. At the time we were staying they were unaware of the rodents in the lower ceiling that travel over the kitchen area. The smell is pretty terrible and it’s everywhere in the house. There are no screens on the windows to get relief from the stink.
We are actively working on the rat situation and apologize for the disturbance they caused our guests. The home has French windows that open out, so there cannot be any screens on them. Thank you!
Dead animal smell on arrival, ants in the kitchen. Located at the end of a private road with no internet access or telephone. More remote than we liked. Checked out after one day.
This place is truly amazing. It feels like a hidden treasure in the woods. A wonderful getaway from the city. It was nice to unplug and hang out by the fire pit on the river. My kids had a blast exploring the special features on the property. This was our second stay at the Stuga and we will be back again soon.
We loved the natural setting, the ancient forest, the river, ferns, mosses, wildflowers & wildlife! The attention to detail, both inside & outside the Swedish Stuga are unmatched in our travels! It is a one of a kind gem!
For someone that gets 300+ emails a day as well as phone call after phone call this is absolutely perfect. No service, TV or internet. No static.
I had a wonderful stay here and most definitely would love to come back in the summer. This was a magical place!
Staying in this beautiful cabin was a real pleasure, offering complete escapism from the outside world. It’s very private surrounds and placement on the side of the valley makes for a highly picturesque connection with the nature around you. Recommended!
Loved the gas stove and fire place. Thanks for letting us know of the parking situation and getting to the home at night. Helped get us prepare to expectations and from getting stuck after almost 1 foot of snow fell the day after we got there.
We would definitely do it again!
This is our second time staying at the stuga, and we'll be back again! Love this peaceful and magical cottage.
The outside atmosphere was amazing. Great to view from the windows and to hike. We brought our own wood for the fire and found some wet wood cut from the house keeping. A nice surprise. There were matches and lighters. The place was so private and peaceful. We loved the roaring stream outside and it was loud at night while sleeping upstairs. We recommend bringing your own tv/dvd player and dvds. It really helped keep from getting bored at night. We recommend using the side path to haul your belongings to the house once you pass the bridge. There are wheel barrows and a sled on the side of the house.
Only two problems that I want to mention. You have to live out of a suitcase because the armoires were filled with cleaning supplies and towels and there is no dresser either. The second being that we had a bad fly problem in the house upon arrival and it continued during the stay. A great place other than that.
This cabin is perfect for a romantic getaway, but it is also ideal for a getaway with the family to focus on time together without distractions and to enjoy nature!
We enjoyed our stay at The Stuga. The surrounding forest is beautiful. The eclectic pathway lighting and adjacent forest landscaping/features were a pleasant surprise. The house is comfortable, the kitchen is well furnished with cooking utensils (bring your own spices, by the way), and the outdoor grill works well. Our beds were comfortable. We enjoyed exploring Mt. Hood and a hike at Trillium Lake.
This place is something out of a book. It's super cool and such a private location. The only thing is the bed upstairs is literally a sack of potatoes, I woke up every morning and my back was killing. That's the only complaint, it was a very cool and clean house!
Very magical place the more you look the more you find. (I won't give it away). So relaxing. Made yummy food, lots of art, reading photography and catching up with a life long friend. It was clean and almost anything you needed to do your cooking with (pots and pans and cooking utensils). It was very clean. And no service, that was wonderful to unplug. Played lots of music. Lots of space to have time to yourself and together time. Thanks for shaing the magic.
We enjoyed our week long stay in the quirky cabin in the woods. It was quiet, relaxing and located close enough to all the activities in the Columbia River Gorge & Mt Hood area. The wild shamrocks growing in the fairy garden added to its charm.
Just a few suggestions to the owner(s):
1. Please consider putting screens on some of the windows. (None of the windows have screens and who is going to open windows in the middle of the woods to let in the bugs & critters.) It was warm during our stay & it would have been nice to open a few windows to let in fresh air and a cross breeze, especially since there is a strong musty smell in the house particularly in the bathroom. Thank you for providing 2 fans, which made sleeping comfortable. Also some sort of roller shades/blinds on the upstairs bedroom windows would be nice since the drapes do not completely cover the windows and the morning light awakens anyone up there at the crack of dawn. (I’m a light sleeper so perhaps this would not bother some people.)
2. Consider giving the entire house a good thorough deep cleaning. Your cleaning service only does the basics and there are dead bugs & dust on the window sills, dust under the beds, and all the throw rugs need a good deep cleaning. Some rugs are pretty filthy and perhaps should be replaced. Also all the antiques and Swedish decorative items located around the home have become very dusty, cobweb covered and give the place a creepy feel. All need a good cleaning.
3. The patio set out on the deck is in need of some major care or replacement. The table and seat cushions are covered with mildew, dirt, cobwebs and the chairs are extremely rusty to the point that none of us would even try to sit on them. A shame since it would have been fun to eat outside by the grill and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. We did use the grill to prepare some tasty meals.
4. Loved the high-end Viking stove, but the wood counter top around the sink has become warped, chipped, and stained. Perhaps consider putting in some sort of solid surface and splurge for a decent Kohler kitchen sink, especially since there is no dishwasher. A solid surface countertop would be way easier to keep cleaned and maintained over time.
All in all it was an interesting & fun experience to stay in your Stuga. It was nice to get away from the cell phones & WiFi for a week and we enjoyed playing cards in the evenings. The surrounding area is truly beautiful and there are so many great hikes, river rafting adventures, and orchards to visit (we recommend the Fruit Loop Tour) to keep a family busy!
We are working with the owner on these issues. This home is very dear to us and we would like it to continue to be a place the couples and people looking to get away from the hustle and bustle can come to enjoy.
I'll start by saying I stayed at the Swedish Stuga for two nights and wish I was able to stay for a full week. The charm and the distinctiveness of this cabin is a real experience. From the quirky decor and accoutrements of the house and surrounding land...to the creek within feet of the cabin...the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere when you're really not....it's an experience that is hard to put into words but one that you will be sad at its end. Another review talked about being off-the-grid, and there was a peace of mind that I found at the Stuga that I was surprised by and I wasn't ready for it to end. Also, the local Vacasa representative was super quick and helpful when I had questions.
And the price! For what you are getting, the price is unbeatable.
A tip for future visitors...you'll want to stay longer than two nights. Four would have been ideal---you almost need a little time to unwind before really enjoying the whole off-the-grid thing and ambience. Also, consider stopping for groceries at a Safeway on the way, as the local grocery is limited and a little pricey.
Loved this house and its location for its quirkiness, loveliness and sense of isolation from the world. It is ideal for a couple.
Absolutely love the Stuga. If you love the outdoors it is an incredible place. Simply magical!
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Stuga. It was a nice getaway from the city tucked in a beautiful forest landscape. My son especially loved exploring the grounds to find interesting items throughout the property. Absolutely beautiful. Enjoyed outdoor dining and roasting smores near the river. Can't wait for our next stay here.
What a gem! I will definitely try to stay here on my next visit to the Mt. Hood area! The host takes great care of their guests, and makes sure that all ammenities are covered! Not having internet or phone service was a plus in my opinion...so nice to disconnect from the world and be surrounded by a natural playground for a few days!
Beautiful location and charming home. The house stays chilly in the non-summer months. Bring extra-firewood and clothing. Be prepared that the instructions for accessing the lock box may be different than advertised. That was our experience, but luckily we figured it out.
This home is nothing short of magical. We came here for Valentine's Day, and it was absolutely lovely: details like the clawfoot bathtub, little tea lights everywhere, and the fireplace make it so romantic and cozy. The stove was fantastic, and we cooked all of our own meals while we were here - pretty necessary (and more fun) since it's so remote! Make sure to bring your snow boots and hike around, too - the home has acres of private trails and its own enchanted fairy garden nestled in the woods. Come out here in the evening, listen to the river, and just breathe.
In the winter, you pretty much have to have chains or 4-wheel-drive. Our little car had a pretty tough time and we had to park about a mile down the hill and hike up - lesson learned for next time! Pro tip: Life will be a lot easier when you check in if you pack a backpack or duffel instead of a rolling suitcase. The driveway is steep and snowy in the winter, and you'll need to walk down the hill, across a steel bridge, and up a staircase to access the home.
Even though we had a few bumps due to icy road conditions, what a perfect stay! We can't wait to come back again in the summer and bring a couple of friends- the porch looks awesome!
What an adventure! We decided on a honeymoon in the snow. What a change from Hawaii at 80 degrees to Rhododendron at 30 degrees. We chose Stuga for its middle of nowhere cabin in the woods feel.
It snowed from the first night, And what a romantic location.
The sound of the rushing stream can be heard throughout the home. The house is very clean, Very uncluttered, & had pretty much all we needed.
The home is at the end of the county maintained road so 4WD/AWD/Chains are a must!!! We had to drive cautiously while driving and sometimes sliding a bit.
They provided 2 sleds at the top of the hill to carry/slide our belongings down the hill and over the steel bridge. A bit spooky but again adventurous. Had to carry up the snow covered stone stairs to the home as it's steep! We were happy to have had our snow shoes for traction, and snow attire on.
The home was warm and cozy when we entered. and very welcoming. (Looks like wall heaters were turned off before we arrived)
Our first night we had prepared an amazing meal with everything we needed. All propane tanks were already turned on. The Viking stove was an added bonus. (There is no seran/foil)
First night we set the thermometer to 68 and went to bed. We woke up to the house being 48 degrees and freezing!!! I called maintenance to find out there is no central heat. Not mentioned online or in homebook.
He mentioned wall heaters. Located around the home (bathroom, kitchen, dining room, 2 upstairs) these wall heaters have no control just off and on so just be aware that they do get warm/hot) so we seemed ok with bathroom and dining room heater on all night to keep us warm.
Firewood/kindling/newspaper not provided!!! Not noted in book!
We had purchased our firewood but forgot kindling/paper/matches we did get stocked up on day 2 Which helped with the heating of the home.
The claw foot tub was amazing! And the candles layed out around the home were perfect. (Could not find matches) but luckily we had them from our stop at the store.
The water heater was able to fill the tub with hot water no problem but did take a while to re heat/fill after use.
As the shower ran out of hot water in the morning.
All of these little quirks are not complaints just suggestions for for updating information online and in the home book so that people can be aware of what to expect.
We look forward to returning!
This is a nice, out of the way property. Be careful in the winter, it is on a private road and doesn't get plowed like the other roads. It gets very icy getting from the road to the house. May try to rent it in the summer and see if it is better then.
I have wanted to stay at the Stuga since I saw Portland Monthly's write up about it years ago. It was worth the wait! The cabin was pristine, beautiful, and clean. I loved the fastidious Swedish cabin decor. The woods felt magical and remote. Everything was comfortable and very clean. The kitchen was well stocked with great cookware. Everything felt very high quality, from the bed linens to the pots and pans. We can't wait to come back in the summertime.
Make sure to bring extra kindling if you plan to have fires! Also the walk up to the house loaded down with bags and groceries can be a bit treacherous without ice traction devices for your shoes.
It was such a beautiful location. I love how hidden away and private it was. The creek is beautiful and the snow just added to the experience. If the skies are clear at night, you'll see more stars in the sky than you could ever imagine. It was simply amazing. I love the little bath and the shower! We took lots of bubble baths and and enjoyed cooking in the well stocked kitchen with the beautiful gas stove.
Great house and grounds with lots of charm!
This is a fantastic home and we were lucky to spend the weekend there. So cozy and romantic!
Our stay at the Swedish stuga was amazing. We brought our 1 year old son and he loved it just as much as we did. Especially the bath tub. We will definitely stay here again, maybe in the summer next time to experience a season change and use the cooling tub outside. I really enjoyed all the masonry and the style of the home. It was very cozy
The Swedish Stuga is a wonderful, enchanted hide away. The privacy of the property and private access to the creek and hiking trails makes this rental a very special place! i look forward to going back many times.
What a great place to get away and DISCONNECT any time of the year.
This home was exactly what my wife and I were looking for...relaxation and privacy.
The property was beautiful...the roaring creek and towering trees made it seem like we were miles away from everything. The landscaping and interior have an "antique" vibe, which sets the mood perfectly when trying to avoid modern distractions.
If you want a cell phone signal or high speed internet, this is not the place for you. You can still get 4G service 10 minutes down the road in Zigzag, so civilization is close if necessary.
Hang out on the deck at night and stare at the lights in the forest. Build a fire down by the creek and feel the cool breeze.
We'll definitely be coming back!
We loved the Stuga so much! We are thinking of returning every year to have a lovely relaxing vacation. This is a great spot.
My husband and I spent three wonderful nights at the Stuga for our one year anniversary. It was so charming as you walked across the bridge and see the beautiful trees and house waiting for you. Everything from furnishings, the claw foot tub, the hidden magical forest, the claw foot tub and the opportunity to get away from everything to enjoy nature and your loved one. And did I mention the tub? We had such an amazing time. The only things that kept my review from being all 5 stars was the fact that the windows and doors did not seem to feel as secure as I would have liked and the fact that a large number of windows down stairs and a few upstairs had no window covering at all including the downstairs bedroom windows, the bathroom window and the full glass french doors or the side door downstairs. But over all it was very magical. And if they ever wanted to get the hot tub over looking the stream back up and running that would be absolutely amazing! I also could not get over the beautiful setup in the woods. I spent a lot of time out there admiring the magical lighting with my husband. The Stuga is definitely a real life fairy tale setting!
Very charming and unique house and property. Fairy garden is awesome. Great stay! Will stay again.
A gorgeous spot with whimsical details to delight the imaginative vacationer. Wonderful use of surroundings. A true gem. My guess is that manager/owner has been on vacation her/himself of late, because a few things were not working, like lights. Otherwise, though, an amazing place to enjoy a cozy weekend.
This cottage is located down a dead end and then about a bit farther on a private drive. For those looking to get away from the city like us it was pure heaven. The incredible details of the property brought such joy to my family we felt like we were constantly on a treasure hunt. There is ample wood to have fires both inside or outside near the river. The river and trails let us explore whenever we wished. Some cleaning would do it a bit of good but the outside areas outweighed any such issues.
Great secluded hideaway, attention to detail. A must for any Swedofile. Wonderful quiet spot to get away from it all.
We loved the Stuga. There were plenty of whimsical touches, there was lots of privacy and beauty, we were never anything less than comfortable and we were sad to have to leave and go away. Next year!
This place is so enchanting. It's a woodland fairy tale house. Full of light, even tucked away in the forest. Spacious-feeling, yet cozy. Easy to prepare meals and enjoy them by a crackling fireplace. Close enough to Mt. Hood and Hood River for fun exploration. Lovely.
So beautiful, wherever you chose to sit or explore :)
I would love to revisit this place again and again. It's charm it's beauty it's owners obviously really loved this place. A lot of love and hard work went into it I can tell. The property and the cabin could use a facelift but overall it was fantastic and I wouldn't trade our experiance for the world.
We loved it. One minor tip: Bring newspaper to get your fire started! There's plenty of wood, but bring some pre-chopped kindling if you don't want to chop your own.
Amazing property. very secluded.
This is such an incredible property!!! Not even sure where to start...My boyfriend and I stayed here for two days recently and just loved it. The grounds are beautiful around the house. There are hiking trails around the house and a few "surprises" in the woods :) The river in front of the house makes this setting so picturesque too. As soon as I opened the car door I could hear the gushing of the river below. We could hear it at night too and thought it was so relaxing and soothing. The stone steps and patio in front of the house are beautiful and make this cottage look so enchanting and quaint. And the inside of the house is equally lovely and charming. We loved the woods floors and all the furnishings. The king-sized bed upstairs was luxurious and comfortable. I think we could have stayed in bed and rested all day both days! There was no tv in the house and we stayed off our wifi most of the time; it allowed us to pay attention to our surroundings and enjoy them. The whole house was beautiful and so charming with a Scandinavian touch everywhere. I think we could just have spent a week doing nothing but enjoying the house and grounds!!! I would highly recommend this incredible and unique property to anyone interested. We would stay here again in a heartbeat if we returned to the area. Thanks Vacasa for a wonderful part of our vacation!!!
Our nephew came in to town and we had never rented a private property before. He suggested we look for one and we found the Stuga cabin. It was a wonderful choice. The location was secluded and quiet. Many have commented on the lack of wi-fi or TV. If your desire was a "connected" world stay in the city, this place isn't for you. There is wi-fi but it's not what a place like this is about. This is about peace, nature and quiet. Don't rely on the negative reviews focusing on steps in the woods, slow wi-fi, no TV, creaky doors or cabinets. Those people really should just stay in the city and never leave, I'm sure there's a Starbucks for them in Seattle or Portland. This is a place you make your own coffee, take a walk, connect with friends and family. It's a very enjoyable place, we loved it.
Location was amazing and the property was beyond beautiful! To get to the house you cross a bridge to get to the house which is up a stone stair case. There are board games and lots of books and also quite a few private trails on the property. Everything about this place was beautiful, fun and relaxing
We rented the stuga months ago as a getaway. We were drawn to this rental due to the amenities such as the soaking pool, swing, Viking stove, and outdoor grill. When we arrived and started checking the place out, I was extremely disappointed, to the point that we left a day early. Where do I begin? Lots of broken drawers and random junk scattered throughout the house in drawers and cabinets. It didn't have that clean organized rental feeling. we were looking for matches to start a fire. No matches or lighters anywhere even though there was a fireplace and candles. Sink isn't caulked so it was leaky whenever you used it. Went to use the grill and it didn't work. Ignite button was missing and was also filthy underneath where the (empty) propane tank was. Had lots of old greasy tools and a moldy pan of grease, however the stove and oven worked well. Bathroom window had no lock and could be lifted open easily. Really disappointed in the fact that a lot of the selling points of the property were not up to par. The "soaking pool" wasn't functioning and was filthy stagnant water, but there was no indication that the soaking pool would not be functional during our stay. If there had been some sort of documentation stating the soaking pool was only available certain months, I would've understood, however the weather was 80 degrees when we were there so we assumed we would have use of it. The swing was non-existant. We were looking forward to taking photos with our daughter on the swing. The overall safety of the house is sub-par. The front doors only shut if you lock them and they were very loose and not secure, to the where they could be pushed open. There is no lock on the gate either, which left us feeling not so safe.
House was clean but cleaning supplies were left out when we arrived. The grill was very dirty and had moldy grease pan underneath. There were also lots of unfinished projects throughout the property, large holes dug all over the place, a big hole in the concrete with loose pieces of concrete in the entry way patio which was very easy to trip on. Overall, I feel like this place needs a serious cleaning and to be organized, and the listing needs to be updated while there are existing projects going on throughout the property, or if certain amenities will not be available. We ended up leaving a day early because we were so disappointed and were forced to leave food in the refrigerator, which was also money wasted. Really bummed.
We are very disappointed to see that this guest did not enjoy this fun getaway better. Had we been notified of the maintenance issues during this reservation we would have addressed them as quickly as possible. The swing and soaking tub are no longer advertised amenities, and we will remove them from the pictures. New linens have been supplied, and the Property Manager has addressed most of the kitchen issues. This guest has been given a refund for their disappointments.
We rented this for our honeymoon and the place/location itself was amazing. It was a magical little hideaway and you'd half expect little fairys to be flying around. The one thing we noticed though is that everything is perfect...in theory.
--The clawfoot tub in the bedroom is so cute and romantic, but you have to fill it over three different sittings because there isn't enough hot water.
--The fireplace and fire pit are incredible, but there are no matches or lighters to get them started. Not a huge deal, but it would be a nice touch to provide something to light them, rather than having to find out the hard way and head into town to buy matches.
--The manmade "hot spring" is incredibleeeeee, but we couldn't use it because there was no way to heat it and after 5 attempts (phone and email) to communicate with the owners and Vacasa, no one got back to us.
--The wifi is almost non-existent. This is fine for an off-the-grid vacay, but we were in the process of buying a house and need to be reachable here and there. The ad says "limited', which would have been all we needed. But, "limited' isn't the right word. It shuts off and reboots over and over. We had to drive into town multiple times to receive and reply to important emails.
--The speakers in the woods were such a nice touch, but there are no directions on how to turn them on, and nobody would return our calls.
So, like I said, all amazing in theory, not in practice. My goal in writing this is to set expectations for future renters. Had we known all of this in advance, we would have been better prepared and had better expectations.
All that said, we did really enjoy ourselves and it was an amazing experience overall, we just wish we could have had some human contact and some additional directions provided to us.
This is a find! Lovely, cute, quirky home that is reached by crossing a narrow foot bridge over a rushing creek/river (too big for a creek, too small for a river). Wonderfully situated at the merger of two smaller creeks into one larger one. Nicely appointed but you will be doing your own dishes in a cute but not so functional sink : ) Great sheets, towels and mattresses. Hot water with great water pressure. Easy drive to historic ZigZag Inn and ~35 minutes to the free sledding/snowshoeing at Whitehead Lake Snow Park. We would like to come back in the summertime and spend long evenings sitting by the creek.
We had very realistic expectations of the cabin being rustic, but we were surprised at the condition of some of the basic amenities like the stove and landline. Struggling to repair these/get these working made it feel less relaxing than we were hoping for. The location is amazing, along with all the trails and place to explore.
Beautiful house and surroundings. The property is beautifully kept.
The stuga stay is a must for anyone who wants to truly experience the mt. Hood region in complete privacy.
This cabin and the surrounding property was amazing. The cabin was comfortable and cozy with lots of firewood on hand. We hiked around the property in the snow and took photos of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. Fall asleep at night listening to the river beside the property flow. You will not be disappointed with your stay at this property. It's absolutely breathtaking!
The house is adorable and the trails surrounding the house made the whole experience magical!
By far the coolest place we have ever stayed. The location with the bridge across the creek is fantastic. Beautiful forest with quaint trails right in the backyard. The kids loved playing in the creek and on the giant swing. The cabin is beautifully built with almost all reclaimed materials. Great deck and front patio to read and relax. Would be nice with a little more light and view of the creek. Kitchen is very impractical, but the cabin is still very cozy.
Were'a couple burnt out city dwellers with little kids and we needed a quiet, disconnected getaway, but one with enough amenities to make the getaway relaxing. This place fit the bill! It's an easy drive from the PDX area (took us less than an hour from our front door), the place feels totally remote, but it's not that far from civilization, and the place is so cozy, quiet, and enjoyable. It is a bit of a walk to the property from where you park your car, but it's not a big deal until you need to haul luggage, coolers, etc. back and forth. Still, it's a relatively easy walk. The cottage is awesome... especially the upstairs portion! The professional Viking oven/stove downstairs was a pleasure to cook on, but man that kitchen sink has one low-flow, close-to-the-edge faucet, which made it a buggar to wash dishes (there is no dishwasher). We rent vacation properties often, and the one thing that often is a big detraction from the properties is lack of cleanliness, wear, smells, and just an overall feeling of dirtiness... this place didn't have any of that. There are no pets and no smoking (anywhere on the property) allowed, and it showed; this place was clean, smelled just like a rustic cabin/cottage, and was super enjoyable. The place lives up to expectations: rustic, but comfortable, it's quirky and a little hodge-podge, but that just adds to its charm. We spent two nights here, and it was fantastic... but that was enough. I have a feeling if we stayed any longer, that quirky rustic spartan charm would start to lose its appeal... but as it was, we left enamored with the place and our kids thought it was a complete wonderland!
Never seen anything like it. Fun to explore the cabins and grounds themselves. Incredible deck/outside area to relax and listen to the creek. Quiet, beautiful retreat. Memorable.
I can't say enough positive things about this place. We stayed for three nights and wished we could have stayed forever. From the moment we passed through the fantastical iron gate and crossed the foot bridge onto the property, it was like we had stepped into a dream. The house and landscaping are absolutely beautiful. We didn't hear or see another person the entire time we were on the property, which made us feel very close to nature. We appreciated being able to use firewood for both indoor and outdoor fires. We will be coming back here as often as we can. Can't recommend it highly enough.
We chose the Stugga to hold our wedding ceremony outdoors. It was so peaceful, quiet and serene. There was not one inch of the property I could possibly complain about, just absolutely beautiful inside and out.
Only one negative... We did play a song at the end of the night for our first dance on a little wifi speaker. I guess the sound travelled and the neighbor could hear it. She approached us and we immediately apologized and turned it down even though it was not loud to begin with. This didn't seem to be enough for her and she demanded we turn it off immediately. It was handled and everything went fine but I would highly suggest that property management speak with this individual and let them know it is not ok to trespass and approach people in an aggressive manner and to handle it with them instead. The property manager came by the next morning and was AWESOME, he understood and we even had video of the whole thing to show him. He handled it very professionally and kindly.
So, only one little hiccup, and it was handled beautifully. I would 200% recommend this property to anyone who would like to disconnect for awhile!
My partner and I were looking for a nearby escape (from our jobs and cell/computer reception), and wow did we find one in the Stuga. The land is beautiful and there are wonderfully maintained paths to explore. It would have been easy to spend our entire visit outside on the property, but there was also so much inside to enjoy.
The house strikes the perfect balance of having wonderfully intimate details but also being comfortable for a wide range of personalities and needs. We were there for three nights: two sort of rainy days and one sunny one, and both the house and surrounding property were enjoyable rain or shine. It was nice to have the place to ourselves, but I can imagine going with another couple or even my parents and also being comfortable.
The owner was working on the property when we arrived. He was very pleasant and gave us some great hiking tips. I am grateful that he provides the Stuga as a rental to others -- the work that he puts into the place is incredible -- and hope he continues to do so well into the future. We plan to make going there an annual tradition!
This is a great getaway just an hour from the Portland area. The cabin is super cute and well-curated. It has a timeless air about it and feels like you're in a story book. The grounds are great as well, with touches of imagination and whimsey everywhere you look. The house has an amazing position on Clear Creek, with no neighbors in sight.
Despite the Viking stove the kitchen is small and more whimsical than practical, so don't plan on any extravagant meals. There are lots of utensils, although mostly of the rental house quality. Having said that we did just fine and had some great dinners out on the deck.
The bedrooms were perfect and my wife loved using the clawfoot tub. There is a nice fireplace and good collection of books. There were a few things that needed looking after, like the grill with it's broken knobs and the molding seat covers outside. The other downside was that the yard has many construction projects going on (wiring, stone work, etc) and although they were mostly unobtrusive it did seem to take away from things a bit.
The Stuga is a real find and I hope they are able to put the finishing touches on it; we would love to go back!
This property is absolute magic. The fairy-tale cottage is nestled into 20 private acres of lush green ferns, moss and trees. You cross a river to arrive to the Stuga, which is furnished in a simple, chic manner and includes a Viking stove, a claw foot tub in the master sleeping loft, a wood burning fireplace, vaulted ceilings and tons of light. The outside grill and dining table is perfect for meals on warm days. The owner, Brian, who we had the pleasure of meeting, is pretty much the sweetest and most sincere man. This home was custom built by him and is clearly a labor of love. He has included so many details to surprise and delight his guests, from hand-forged trails through the beautiful private land, a swing that makes you feel as though you're flying through the treetops, a lighted chandelier in the forest, glowing magical mushrooms on the forest floor and a "firefly" display in the evening. Staying here will feel a million miles away and you will emerge feeling refreshed, relaxed, restored and thoroughly enchanted. Thank you, Brian, for sharing your world with us!
That's the best way to describe it. If you want to feel secluded in the woods but not too far from civilization, this is the place for you. The cabin and property provide more than enough for a solid week trip.
We had a great time on the property and home. Very mystical place, you can feel the energy from the home and the property that surrounds it. Loved the antiques and the different parts of old historic homes build into the home, gives it such history and you wonder who lived in those houses before they were demolished. Thanks for letting us stay there and I wish we could of talked to the owner a little more but we got caught up unpacking . Would love to come back Sue McInnes
Stay in the Stuga if you want a nice little home in a beautiful secluded setting. We had a wonderful time here on our honeymoon and plan on coming back. The oven was broken so we weren't able to back the things we had bought for the cabin. We hope that some of the appliances that were not working will be fixed by then. The true highlight of this property is the beautiful surroundings, enjoy them!
We will work on getting those appliances up and running as quickly as possible. Thank you for sharing such a special occasion with us!
Overall, we had a lovely stay. Brian has done a lot of work making some incredible trails leading straight from the Stuga, which would throughly enjoyed and welcomed the workout. I'd consider staying there again and would recommend it to friends as long as they were safe on the stairs and brought the extra cookware!
Somehow physically crossing the river made me leave all my stresses behind. Time stops in this magical home. Definitely coming back.
Thank you for your review. We are incredibly happy that you enjoyed your time in this great house, and we hope you return! Thank you for choosing Vacasa!
This is by far the most peaceful, magical place we have ever stayed. The setting is lovely, the Stuga is cozy and comfortable, there are too many touches of whimsey to name. And for us, the location was close to our home, but absolutely secluded and restful.
Thank you for sharing your review with us. We're glad that you enjoyed this beautiful, comfortable home. The location is fantastic. Peaceful and secluded. Perfect for a relaxing getaway. Please come again!
Beautiful place for a quiet relaxing get away. Just a few things to be prepared for such as the beds are hard and uncomfortable and beds upstairs squeak pretty bad. They have the house wired with speakers but couldn't get music so recommend bringing your own music and docking station/ portable speaker and any other entertainment. Cool shower, but recommend flip flops since floor is uneven and rocks can be uncomfortable on your feet. It's an awesome place to stay and the owners have added special touches that make the place extra special and look forward to hopefully going back.
The house itself is great, but the grounds, the trails, and the things hidden therein are the highlight of this beautiful location. If you stay here, and you really should, build in a full day just to explore. It is a magical place, and that's the only accurate way I can think of to describe it.
This cottage provided the most blissful vacation we've had in recent memory. From it's ideal setting to the charming Stuga itself this vacation home provides a perfect respite and home base for all your Mt. Hood adventures. You won't regret booking this marvelous home!
Thank you for this great feedback. I am s glad that Vacasa got to be a part of your most blissful vacation. This home is set in gorgeous surrounding so I am so glad you enjoyed all the activities that Mt. Hood offers.
Our trip to the Stuga was one of the most wonderful vacations I've ever had. We were visiting our Son and his Girlfriend in BEND, OR and wanted to take them some place special....Well I sure picked a GREAT place. From the moment we arrived we were all impressed with the surroundings and the property. The owner sure takes pride and pays attention to the little details...WE will be back as soon as we can. If I could I would give this place a TEN Star rating.....
Thank you for this great review. We love to hear back from guests that the home was perfect for their stay!
It's a beautiful, idyllic place for a getaway. You feel like you're the only ones in the world. I've already recommended the Stuga to all my friends.
Thank you for your review and recommendation! This home does have a beautiful atmosphere so I am so glad you were able to enjoy it.
This is a wonderful property! We feel so grateful that the owner had such a lovely vision for the place AND is willing to share it with others! We will be back!
Very cute secluded house in the mountains. Loved it.
We stayed for a week with a 2.5 yr old and a 5.5 yr old. It was a fantastical location with a "spirit tree" "fairy garden" with glowing mushrooms and truly captured a Scandinavian spirit the kids loved. We look forward to staying there again. 20 min to Timberline Lodge, 15 to the Mirror Lake Trailhead.
Very beautiful.. and the house is old world scandanavian..loved it!!
We came to Rhododendron in order to hike on the mountain everyday. The problem was that the Stuga property was so beautiful, so inviting, and so romantic, I didn't want to leave!
As we walked up to the house we were greeted by the owner who was very friendly and told us about some new trials he had been working on. Walking across the foot bridge and seeing the house for the first time it seemed almost enchanted! My family is from Sweden and the house was very closely modeled after a traditional Swedish vacation home with a touch of the Northwest. Its simply beautiful and cozy and just what we needed!
As stated in the comments regarding the home, there is no cell service but for those that like to stay connected in some form there is a landline. Also, if you cross the foot bridge there are some places where you can get a few bars:) Its good to escape, but we have two small children that didn't come with us so keeping in contact was essential.
Overall, I can't say enough about this place. When our kids came up the second day we explored and played around the property. Our girls are 2 and 6 and thought the land was magical. I agree!!!
Thank you for building such a unique place....we will be back for sure perhaps in every season!
Thank you for your glowing review of this truly beautiful house. It makes us happy that you had such a wonderful time with your family. We are excited to see you again soon!
Magical, enchanting, got engaged.... Amazing!
This was an absolutely wonderful place to stay. We only had one day off after our wedding, and we came to the right place. The house was beautifully constructed, and the location was very peaceful and relaxing. We will definitely have to return.
We are excited to hear that you enjoyed your stay - Congratulations on your wedding!
The Swedish Stuga is just lovely. It feels totally isolated and rural, but is charming, luxurious, and romantic at the same time. It's the perfect size for two. The woods behind the cabin are fun to explore, but it's just as nice to sit on the stone patio and relax in the (fleeting) sun. The nearby Ramona Falls hike is highly recommended--go the clockwise route for a gradual incline and check to see if the seasonal bridge has been put up if you have any issues or concerns about crossing a river on a fallen log. We were there in early June and the bridge had not yet been installed for the season. Bring slippers to the stuga, it's cold. But it will get cozy once you get your fire going. Thank you Stuga!
If you ever wanted to stay in a place where someone designed a uniquely fun, real and peaceful vacation home... Here is a successful place to enjoy a curious time just relaxing, breathing, cooking, playing, exploring and wondering when I should come back again for more. Thank you for the welcoming experience.
Completely satisfied with our stay! •:*¨¨*~P~E~R~F~E~C~T~ *¨¨*:•
The home was very clean and fresh. Exactly as presented in the advertisement. We loved the solitude!
loved location and home.
needs some very minor repairs and trash problem needs to be resolved.
Thank you for your review; unfortunately this home does not receive regular trash service so we do ask guests to pack out their garbage and hope that it is not too much of an inconvenience. We look forward to having you back!
This was a wonderful getaway for a small family! We loved being away from phones, tv and internet. There was so much to explore and see around the property. The swing was a ton of fun for the kids and we had a great time chopping logs for the stove and hiking the trails. We hope to come back and check it out in the winter!
is a most wondrous thing.
This is our second time staying here, and it was once again a magical experience. My 6 year old son says it's like entering a different world, and I couldn't agree more. We love it.
This house and the property surrounding are gorgeous. I felt as if I was in a Swedish folk story. From the wood carvings, the statues, the fountains, the ponds and the chandelier in the forest(!!); to the amazing woodworking and decor in the home itself, this place is top notch for a relaxing getaway. Be forewarned that the cook stove in the kitchen is wood fired, so if building fires is not your specialty, you may want to bring things that don't require baking (there is an electric stovetop).
We absolutely loved our stay at the Stuga! It is such a cozy and beautiful home. We plan to return in the future and would love to stay there in every season!
Several amenities are available in the kitchen including a coffee pot and grinder, toaster and an electric water kettle and plug in electric burners. The stove is wood fired and like others we had some difficulty with it, unlike others we overcame these and have some tips on how you can too.
Firstly, you need to know how to lay your fire from the top and use plenty of paper and kindling. Close up the top before lighting! It will take a while to heat up the chimney and there is a fan right there so use it.Be patient and you'll get a good draw and can put in some larger material.
Secondly, it is crucial to use dry wood. When you arrive cut up any wood that you brought or is inside near the fireplace to no bigger than 2 in or so think. Additional wood might not be seasoned and contain a fair amount of water. Log cabin stack it near the fire and "grill" pieces on the stove.
Lastly, the slide at the back controls how much heat gets to the right side of the stove surface. This also helps heat the oven. We couldn't find the tool to turn the square knob that switches the different grates and dumps the ash but a 5/8in socket does. Also as of this writing the top shelf isn't bolted to the surface but we didn't have any problems.
With faith and fun you will have the success we had too. With continuous feeding we roasted a perfect 9lb rib eye at 450 deg and baked a nice bday cake too. We look forward to returning in any weather and with any stove.
If you are looking for this: to be REALLY alone, in the middle of a beautiful forest 360 degrees around you, a great sounding stream, no neighbors close or in sight, needing quality time with your spouse; this is the place! This is a place that you bring all your food with you because there is no reason you will want to go back to civilization until it's time to leave. Get lost in the feeling of being really alone imagining where in this world you want to be for the duration of your stay. No TV, bring a good book, talk with your spouse without interruption and relax. The property is really that awesome. The cottage is quaint, not elegant nor meant to be, authenticity to detail is amazing. Bring simple meals, unless you are proficient in cooking with a wood stove. There is an electric 2 burner portable cook top you can use. Our whole stay was just amazing!
We are glad you enjoyed your stay! We are replacing the antique wood fired stove with a new $4,500 Viking range, and it will be there by Thanksgiving 2011. This should make cooking far simpler on your next trip!
Wonderful property with a charming stuga. So secluded yet close to great hiking and restaurants. I plan o returning year after year!
We celebrated my brother's 31st birthday at the Swedish Stuga. I am out of words to describe this house and the location! Absolutely beautiful. The house is very well kept and the surrounding areas were beautifully carved to perfection. I wanted to stay much longer and explore the surrounding forest and the clear creek running in front of the house. There is no internet or cell phone range - so if you want a place where you could still be in touch with your friends back home - this might not be the perfect place.
Thank you for your review! We are glad you had a great time and we hope to have you back soon!
Many thanks for a great week. We admire the hard work that went into building the Stuga . What a magical place you have created. Complete solitude surrounded by trees, a river, flowers, gnomes and lights in the woods! If you want to get away from traffic and the demands of everyday life as most of us know it, this is the place for you!
My husband, daughter, and I enjoyed our week stay at the Stuga. Great location, sweet house, and nice attention to personal touches around the cabin and grounds. The only thing we'd change is the request to remove trash on departure. There were no instructions about location to do so. We ended up getting in touch with the owner and worked it out.
Lovely stay though and we would love to return!
Our housekeeper removes the trash between each guest - sorry we didn't make that clear!
Loved the seclusion, simplicity and beauty of this lovely Stuga. Internet, cell service and TV were replaced with the songs of warblers, wrens the thrushes, and the sound of cascading water as it rushed down a gorgeous stream.
Would recommend bringing slippers for use indoors, and planning for simple meals.
I wanted a retreat following an intense period of work, and this was the PERFECT setting.
VERY scenic and secluded location, perhaps unlike anything else you could expect to rent. The sound of the stream is peaceful. There are some quirky things to put up with, like weird rocks in the shower, old pots and dishes, but the overall experience is well worth it. It grows on you, and you don't want to leave. Thanks for the experience !
We loved the Stuga, our only complaints would be the furniture and the wood fired oven. It's such a great romantic get away and having a comfortable sofa in front of the fire, that both of us could have sat comfortably on and cuddled would have been great. We loved the rustic feel of the stuga, but the wood fired oven isn't practical for cooking. An electric oven would be a much needed improvement. The property surounding the stuga is absolutely incredible. Having 20 + acres to yourself without ever seeing a neighbor is just what we were looking for. We loved it.
We've taken your suggestion, and are replacing the wood fired stove with a Viking gas grange. It will be there by Thanksgiving 2011!
The in floor heating is not operating or I don't know how to operate it.
The radiant heating in the floor is operational, but as it comes through the wood floors, it can take an hour or so for the floor to warm up.
Location was magical. Wish there was an option for baking besides woodburning stove...either toaster oven or microwave, and that this fact was more prominently put in ad. Loved all the touches outside; swing, lights, carvings in trees. We will be back.
I would recommend that you let renters know that arriving in the daylight is a good idea. Especially if cold and snowing.
Overall the property was really great and well kept, but I would have loved to have a better stove available (not just an electric one) and a TV. The heated floor were wonderful but it took a while to warm up the house, which was not ideal for our baby. On the other end, the location of this home is fantastic since it is so private and it has amazing views of the forest and the water stream. I will definitely try to go back.
We spent two nights in January at the "Stuga". It was way better than what I thought and was so pleased with everything. So many little details make the place seem almost magical. Everything from wireless "airplay" in ceiling speakers to provide ambient music from your iphone/ipod or itunes, to face carvings on trees, a giant swing, a lantern hung in the middle of the forest and a perfect little bath tub... The pictures don't do it justice. I'm a professorial photographer and had a great time taking new pics that hopefully the owners feel moved to use. Great times!
A last minute booking, our stay at the Swedish Stuga turned out to be a very special one. The location and setting are great. On the foot of Mt Hood, along a stream, pretty remote, between the trees there was this charming place covered in snow. Beautiful. The house has a lot of character, many great details, not luxurious but very conveniant. This place feels like home and we would love to stay here in other seasons as well.
My husband and I stayed here for our 10th anniversary and this place went above and beyond our expectations! We loved it! I've never stayed anywhere like it. It was very very private, clean, and well-thought out. I absolutely wouldn't change a thing!!!
We loved this house, nestled in the woods. Even the approach - down a dirt road, over a foot bridge - was romantic. The only change we'd make is adding a full bath to the wonderful master bedroom upstairs but otherwise, it's a fantastic property.
